Navigating a Mad, Swollen River

This account of John Wesley Powell’s perilous river exploration is engaging and often heart-pounding. Powell, a one-armed Civil War hero and mountain climber, led his nine-man crew down the Big Canyon (Grand Canyon today) through a thousand miles of uncharted ravines. They navigated the “swollen, mad” Green River with its treacherous rapids and the Colorado River. More than once he wondered if it was wise to go on, and three men died.
The fact that any of them lived to walk out of the previously unexplored canyons surprised many, as revealed in this excerpt.
“The fishermen had been watching for remnants of the rumored ill-fated John Wesley Powell Expedition. They expected human remains and boat fragments, not six dirty, tattered, sunburned, half-starved, exhausted men. They praised God, for the expedition had been given up for dead.”
This book is informative and interesting, and the photos are gorgeous. I highly recommend it.

Conquering the Great Unknown, a book by Angela Reuben and J. Rae Chipera

As a person who enjoys reading historical accounts of our nations growth and development, I really recommend reading "Conquering the Great Unknown" by Angela Reuben. Reuben "takes you there" as the story unfolds about Major John Wesley Powell, post civil war soldier and scientific explorer and his crew, who risk their lives to make discoveries that shape the future. The photography is outstanding and the maps are so appreciated, both lending to the experience of the story line. I appreciate the amount of work the author and photographer did in terms of fact and photo gathering and the great care they took in order to bring this book to life. It's an easy read for students and adults alike as Angela Reuben takes you through the heart pounding experience and leaves you wondering how these explorers made it through using only the tools of their time. It's a must read for any and all who share a love of history.

The Conquering the Great Unknown is a delicious recall of Colorado River's discovery filled with with adventure waiting at every turn.Through simplistic narrative and splendid photos Rueben and Chipera do a splashing job in retelling a moment in history when a group of men from all walks of life, under the determined and knowledgeable leadership of Major John Wesley Powell, venture into a yet-be-traveled Colorado River thought impossible to conquer and reveal it's secrets of beauty and knowledge. This book is great for anyone who loves rafting, history and science. Thanks to this book, I know more about the Colorado River and what it means to navigate the rapids into the canyon of the unknown.
