About the Author
Simon J. Bronner, Distinguished University Professor of American Studies and Folklore and director of the American Studies doctoral program at Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg, is the author of more than a dozen books, including Grasping Things: Folk Material Culture and Mass Society in America and Killing Tradition: Inside Hunting and Animal Rights Controversies. He lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Excellent Book

Dr. Bronner is one of the great scholars of folklore, so if you have any interest at all in the subject, his books really need to be on your reading list. Having had him as a professor, I know from personal experience that he really, really knows his material.
Although this was a required text in a class, I found it both highly informative and also quite fascinating. Some of the traditions discussed, such as football, were things I had never given much thought to. Thanks to Dr. Bronner's book, I have a different perspective now and a greater appreciation.

Good Scholarly Work

Dr. Bronner (full disclosure: a professor I have taken for classes at the PhD level and the head of my department) does a great job of using folkloric methods to unpack the meaning behind various American traditions. Some of the material here can be a bit dense, and I will not lie and suggest that this is light reading - this is designed for an academic audience. That said, if you are interested in folklore and ethnography, Bronner's work is pretty much required reading. Definitely recommended for scholars and students.
