The Mirage, by Jamal Sanad Dr. Al-Suwaidi

The Mirage is an expression of His Excellency Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi's perspective that the struggle in which many Arab and Muslim countries are currently engaged against extremist groups and organizations is not limited to the realm of military and security operations; it is also an extended war of an essentially intellectual nature that requires long-term planning, which is no less important indeed, perhaps even more so than planning in military and security terms. Academic scholarship plays a vital role in protecting the security of nations and societies via rigorous analysis of challenges and threats and the subsequent presentation of appropriate solutions. The role of scholars in times of historic conflict is to be at the forefront of the defenders of human and civilizational values against extremists and radical militants. It is to this end that the author has written this book.

The book examines this phenomenon from multiple research angles: intellectual, political, ideological, cultural and social, exploring political religious thought in its various manifestations, and explaining the intellectual and organizational disparities between relevant groups. The book tracks the history of this phenomenon, tracing it to its peak in the early 2010s, revealing the intellectual and ideological characteristics of these groups for interested researchers, decision makers and the public in an effort to deconstruct the various obstacles they pose to civilizational progress and development in Arab and Muslim countries.

Every chapter reflects the author's conviction that political religious groups represent neither the true face of Islam nor its moderate values, and that yielding to the claims of these groups is a serious affront to religion and its essential values of moderation and tolerance.

The Mirage also employs an insightful research vision in its approach to political religious groups and their various practices and manifestations. It tracks their historical evolution and studies particular examples from their inception up until the recent failure of the Muslim Brotherhood-inspired governments that took power in certain Arab and Muslim countries, identifying the causes of their failure, exposing the fallacy of an 80-year legacy of pretentious slogans that attracted such veneration among these groups and their sympathizers not least among the Muslim Brotherhood itself.

Readers will recognize that various elements of current realities in Arab and Muslim countries show similarities with the backwardness of certain aspects of the European Middle Ages particularly in terms of the ideologies and practices of political religious groups in the Arab and Muslim worlds in the modern era, and specifically their intellectual and political structures, the relationship between religion and politics, the role of clergy, as well as the prevailing philosophies in Europe and the Arab and Muslim worlds.

This gives rise to several questions: are the Arab and Muslim worlds today fighting a similar battle to that experienced by the Europeans around five centuries ago? Does this mean that five centuries separate European and Islamic civilizations? And if so is there any way to overcome such a schism? Are backwardness and modernity inevitably sequential, whereby one becomes a prerequisite to the other? Why is modernity viewed as the antithesis of religiosity an implicit rejection of religion and its teachings? Why do some groups in the Arab and Muslim societies think that talk about religion ends where talk about progress and development begins? Why have referential concepts disappeared and given way to destructive ideas like those espoused by political religious groups?

“The Mirage” is a wonderful book. Not doubt
By Pavlos Stefanou
The book (The Mirage) is about the conflict between religious moderation and political extremism in the Arab and Muslim countries. The book is written by Dr. Jamal Sanad Al- Suwaidi. Dr. Al-Suwaidi is the Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) and Professor of Political Science at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) University. The author is an expert in the Arab and Muslim world and in particular he is well known in his scholarly contributions on political Islam.

Dr. Al-Suwaidi identifies the dichotomy between moderate Islam and extremist Islam. In one hand, the author traced back the root cause of Islamic extremism to the ideas and writing of Abu Al-A’la Al-Mawdoodi and Sayyid Qutb. He indicated that Al-Mawdoodi and Qutb, an of course the current Islamic extremist groups are adopted a narrow interpretation of Sharia, based on concept of “hakimiyya”, and considering themselves the agents of God on earth. The author believes that this is the base of Islamic fundamentalism and political violence today. In the author’s view this is utopia, illation, hallucination, fantasy, or what the author’s call “the Mirage”.

On the other hand, and according to the author, there is a moderate-peaceful Islam. This is the Islam that the author is advocating. Dr. Al- Suwaidi sees moderate Islam is based on the teaching of the Profit Muhammad and Arab and Muslim philosopher Abu Al-Waleed Muhammad Ibn Ahmed Ibn Rushd (Averroes). He believes that the pure moderate Islam approach is essentially based on centrism and balances in various aspects of life.

The book presents strong arguments about the difference between the moderate and extremist Islam in the Arab and Muslim world. It holds a wide array of detailed examples that distinguish between the two thoughts of moderate and extremist Islam. According to Dr. Al-Suwaidi, the “centrist” Islam of the Profit Muhammad is what the majority of Muslims have known and lived with for centuries. Indeed, and form the author’s view, this sort of Islam should be practiced in the Arab and Muslim world. On contrary, the extremist and violent interpretation of Islam (the mirage) of Abu Al-A’la Al-Mawdoodi and Sayyid Qutb should be rejected and not giving it the opportunity to thrive.

Overall, “The Mirage” is a wonderful book. Not doubt, it will give pleasure to anyone interested in knowing the original thinking of radical Islam in the Arab and Muslim societies. The book is breathtakingly original and it should be in the shelf of everyone who interested to know the root causes of Islamic extremism as well to comprehend the current frustrations in the Arab and Muslim countries.

The Mirage by Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi: criticisms of Islam published by a respected Muslim scholar – FINALLY!!!

The Mirage by Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi: criticisms of Islam published by a respected Muslim scholar – FINALLY!!!

Finally, someone has been able to utter “a call to awareness” that may summon the attention of the vast mass of politically correct, thus intellectually stunted, academia in America and the West, as compelling as the Muslim “call to prayer” can be in a Muslim community.

For American academia, I believe there now is such a stunning call to awareness, in the form of a book written by an internationally respected Muslim scholar in the UAE, that critically reveals the problems in Islam that lead to extremist jihadi ideology, that prevents Muslim cultures from interacting productively with the west, and that prevents nations organized under the principles of political Islam from satisfying the needs of Muslims in those nations.

I’m asking that everyone who is able read The Mirage by Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, and encourage any liberal academics that you know to buy it and read it and discuss it in their liberal academic circles.

For decades, American academics have been scared away from any scholarly activity that aims a critical eye at Islam, following Edward Said’s accusation that any western non-Muslim scholar who attempted to study Islam was engaging in racism and neo-colonial white supremacy.

This intrinsically absurd act of “playing the race card” by Said was, none the less, embraced by the liberal elites of academia in America and Great Britain and Europe, resulting in academia rejecting all recognition of the problems in Islam that threaten Western Civilization and that doom Islamist organizations to stubbornly ignorant, brutal, failed, extremist behaviors.

This voluntary intellectual castration can now be discarded with the appearance of a critique of Islam written by a respected Islamic scholar, that even the most politically correct American academician can allow into scholarly discussion and debate.

The work of Bernard Lewis was “discredited” in American academia by arguments made by Edward Said, but those arguments cannot be applied to the published works of Al-Suwaidi.

The Mirage is one of those rare books that change the way you think about Islam and politics in the Middle East and Muslim socie
By Michelle
The book sets out to explain nothing less than why Muslim fundamentalist groups behave the way they do, and, astonishingly, the author has the smarts and panache to pull it off. With passion and eloquence, the author argues for the proposition that the ideas of this group are unattainable. On the other hand, he conceived that moderate Islam can be the best alternative for peace, stability and developments in the Arab and Islamic world. The author is intelligent, articulate, well-informed, and thought-provoking.
