About the Author
Swami Abhedananda October 1866 - 8 September 1939), born Kaliprasad Chandra was a direct disciple of the 19th century mystic Ramakrishna Paramahansa and the founder of Ramakrishna Vedanta Math. Swami Vivekananda sent him to the West to head the Vedanta Society, New York in 1897, and spread the message of Vedanta, a theme on which he authored several books through his life, and subsequently founded the Ramakrishna Vedanta Math, in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Darjeeling. His books include "India and her People", "Self-Knowledge", "How to be a Yogi", "Divine Heritage of Man", etc.

An excellent composite of lectures pertaining to the concept of reincarnation and why it must exist. It explains reincarnation from a scientific as well as from a moral perspective and engages the Western mind to consider this major component of Vedanta philosophy as a valid concept.

Classic Statement for Reincarnation

Swami Abhedananda (1866- 1939) was a brother monk to the famous Swami Vivekananda (1863- 1902) and differed from him in the theory of reincarnation. Abhedananda states that the human soul never retrogrades in animal body. The soul goes upward until it reaches perfection. Reincarnation is one of the fundamental beliefs of Hinduism and Vedanta.
The five lectures which comprises the chapters are (1) Reincarnation (2) Heredity and Reincarnation (3) Evolution and Reincarnation (4) Which is Scientific-- Resurrection or Reincarnation and (5) Theory of Transmigration. These lectures were delivered in America around the turn of the 20th century. Swami Abehedananda was acquainted with the finest western scholars of his day such as Max Mueller, Paul Deussen, William James and Josiah Royce.
