Gin Glorious Gin: How Mother's Ruin Became the Spirit of London, by Olivia Williams

Gin Glorious Gin is a vibrant cultural history of London seen through the prism of its most iconic drink. Leading the reader through the underbelly of the Georgian city via the Gin Craze, detouring through the Empire (with a G&T in hand), to the emergence of cocktail bars in the West End, the story is brought right up to date with the resurgence of class in a glass - the Ginnaissance.

As gin has crossed paths with Londoners of all classes and professions over the past three hundred years it has become shorthand for metropolitan glamour and alcoholic squalor in equal measure. In and out of both legality and popularity, gin is a drink that has seen it all.

Gin Glorious Gin is quirky, informative, full of famous faces - from Dickens to Churchill, Hogarth to Dr Johnson - and introduces many previously unknown Londoners, hidden from history, who have shaped the city and its signature drink.

Lively and compelling social history. Loved it!
By Aspen
Never in the history of time has a single drink had such a rich and diverse history. In an amazing debut, 'Gin Glorious Gin', Olivia Williams writes with verve, passion and humour about this ubiquitous drink.

This is an entertaining and erudite romp through a social history of England starting in the early 18th century. I'm not a gin drinker and expected this read to be, perhaps, informed but dry. Far from it. Ms Williams narrative has pace and humour and I truly savoured every page of an extraordinary journey. It's a story well told and brimming with life. Gin gains a social context which is both informed and compelling. History is brought to life.

Mother's ruin, Dutch courage, gin palaces, Hogarth, Dickens, Anthony Blunt, Royal associations and much more are examined in this lively account. Gin has a colourful and diverse history. A cause of moral decline, it was described to Parliament as 'an infection drink permeating the lives of the working poor'. It's the only drink subjected to a number of specific legislative measures intended to control both production and consumption. Most attempts resulted in spectacular failure and for near on 100 years, this spirit had a profound effect on infant mortality and social deprivation. But ultimately, it was also the single cause of positive social change. Ms Williams' research is impeccable; so many references to literature, the Arts and household names give the content an almost tangible feel.

I would never have believed that gin distilleries, process, equipment and location could be interesting. I had no idea that at one time there were literally thousands in London or why the city became the gin capital of the world. Influential individuals ensured that Excise laws were created to ensure a competitive world market.

From grime to glamour, this is a journey to follow. Bang up to date, the boutique distilleries set the scene in the opening chapter before the clock is turned back to the start. This book's a total delight and I'm the better for it. Cheers!

My thanks to UK publisher, Headline, for providing a review copy via Netgalley.

Gin, Glorious Gin
By Damaskcat
This is a totally fascinating story of how gin has waxed and waned in popularity over the centuries. From its origins in the Dutch drink 'genevra ' to modern 'limited edition' varieties. I don't actually like gin myself but having read this book I wonder whether that is because I haven't yet found the right flavour.

I did disagree with one statement in the book - that there is no scientific proof that gin makes drinkers depressed. The only time I have drunk gin I felt very depressed afterwards in a way that no other form of alcohol had ever made me feel. I'm willing to try it again to see if it still has that effect or whether it was a particular combination of circumstances which led to the depression. I wasn't too keen on the taste either but I have learned from this book that there are many different flavours and combinations of flavours available.

The book covers the early days of gin in England and how it became the drink of choice for many poor people. There were many - largely unsuccessful - attempts by parliament to prevent the excessive drunkenness which plagued not just London but other cities. Gin was cheap and could be produced by anyone with the equipment to do so because restrictions on who could produce it were largely ignored.

From its heyday in the eighteenth century when Hogarth drew Gin Lane to gin's current popularity as the basis for all sorts of cocktails this is a roller coaster of a story taking in a great deal of social history which is fascinating to read. There are brief histories of all the wel known distillers as well together with details of gin varieties currently available and distilleries which welcome visitors.

If you enjoy reading social history - even if you don't like gin itself - this is an interesting read. It is well written in a lively and entertaining style and it is well researched too. I received a free copy of the book from NetGalley for review purposes.

An easy read even without an accompanying drink
By James W. Vice
An informative and amusing book for the gin lover. I hadn't realized the magnitude of the problem in "gin lane" in the decades after its cheap introduction to England nor the inspirations for all the oddities that now take the name "martini."

Genghis Khan: His Conquests, His Empire, His Legacy, by Frank McLynn

Mongol leader Genghis Khan was by far the greatest conqueror the world has ever known. His empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean to central Europe, including all of China, the Middle East, and Russia. So how did an illiterate nomad rise to such colossal power and subdue most of the known world, eclipsing Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon? Credited by some with paving the way for the Renaissance, condemned by others for being the most heinous murderer in history, who was Genghis Khan?

His actual name was Temujin, and the story of his success is that of the Mongol people: a loose collection of fractious tribes who tended livestock, considered bathing taboo, and possessed an unparalleled genius for horseback warfare. United under Genghis, a strategist of astonishing cunning and versatility, they could dominate any sedentary society they chose.

Combining fast-paced accounts of battles with rich cultural background and the latest scholarship, Frank McLynn brings vividly to life the strange world of the Mongols, describes Temujin's rise from boyhood outcast to becoming Genghis Khan, and provides the most accurate and absorbing account yet of one of the most powerful men ever to have lived.

Review
Praise for Genghis Khan

Booklist, July 2015
“This ambitious and massive effort offers some credible insights into the qualities of Genghis while providing an excellent chronicle of his military campaigns and conquests. Particularly interesting is McLynn’s description of thirteenth-century Mongolia, with its incredibly complicated web of tribes, clans, and subclans…This is an informative and admirable effort that is ideal for general readers.”

Kirkus Reviews starred review, 5/15/15
“A sanguinary and thorough account of ‘the greatest conqueror the world has ever known.’ McLynn knows the terrain and the times so well that he writes about 12th- and 13th-century history and culture as if it were yesterday. Throughout this intricately detailed text, the author pauses continually to explain relevant devices, personalities, political situations, and geography—all of this gives readers a chance to truly understand…McLynn recognizes that the historical sources must be constantly questioned and analyzed, as victors tend to inflate their victories and losers, to minimize and blame…Thoroughly researched, grim, grisly, and sometimes even grudgingly admiring.”

Publishers Weekly, 5/18/15
“Sweepingly ambitious and persistently intriguing.”

I want to go on record and say that this is my favorite book to date on Genghis Khan (or Mongols in ...
By David Preslicka
As a lover of history, I want to go on record and say that this is my favorite book to date on Genghis Khan (or Mongols in general). I don't think it deserves 5 stars, but because of the rating system this is the closest I can come to how I truly feel about the book. If I was being honest, I would say it deserves between 4.5 and 5 stars. That being said, I would like to provide some likes and dislikes of the book so that others can decide whether or not they would like to also read it. Although I fully understand that a lot of people won't agree with me on some (or all) of the things I have to say, I truly hope it helps someone in their decision of a possible future purchase.
I believe Frank McLynn's book does the following things well:
1. He writes the book in a way that isn't too academic. It is an academic book (and has over 100 pages of notes and bibliography that he drew his information from), but it didn't read like one. Once I started the book it was very hard to put down.
2. He provides a very detailed (and in my opinion needed) couple of chapters on the geography of central Asia and what the "Mongols" were like before being united by Genghis Khan. The geography part is a little long-winded, but the history behind what was there prior to Temujin and the dynamic between the different nomadic tribes is truly essential to a full understanding of (or appreciation of) what Genghis Khan accomplished in a relatively short period of time.
3. He breaks the book down into logical parts instead of just trying to run through everything with a straight chronology. He begins with the uniting of the different Mongol tribes and then breaks down the conquests into the Jin (northern China), the Khwarezmian Empire (one of my favorite parts of the book), and Eastern Europe (including Russia). I also appreciate the fact that the book doesn't end with the death of Genghis Khan. It goes on to concentrate on his son Ogodei's role as Great Khan and then glosses over Guyuk and Mongke. It all seems to make more sense (to me) with the way that he put it together.
4. He doesn't go crazy over trying to be a military expert and describe each conquest (battle) with overly small details. I realize this might be a negative to some, but for me, it made the book much more enjoyable.
5. Finally (I'm sure I could find more positives, but I am just including these) McLynn uses the conclusion to do some interesting things like speculate about why the Mongols didn't (or couldn't) take over Western Europe. It included some odd ideas, but it was interesting none the less.
The following is the hopefully small downside to McLynn's book:
1. He adds a lot of cliched type of language throughout the entire book. I would include a specific, but really all you need to do is open the book up and read a page or two and you will find a perfect example. I am not sure if he thinks he is being clever or if he believes this is helpful, but it became a bit of a distraction after a while.
2. He kept emphasizing the result of not surrendering to the Mongols after every single battle. They would kill everyone (brutally), rape (brutally), take artisans captive to be put to use later on, and use any other captives as fodder for future battles (sieges). I liked them including the brutality of the Mongol conquests and why they did what they did, but I found myself reading the same post-battle details over and over (and over). This may seem picky, but it was a negative for me.
3. This next one is something that I picked up on because of my interest in Russian history. McLynn seemed condescending to Russia and their history. One example is the "attack" on Alexander Nevsky and how his accomplishments are over-rated and relatively insignificant compared to other events in history. You may not view this in the same way, but I thought I would include it anyway.
4. Finally, McLynn made (in his conclusion) a couple of very odd comparisons between Genghis Khan and Jesus and Genghis Khan and Francis of Assisi. I didn't see the significance of including this in the book.
Overall, if you are interested in Genghis Khan and the Mongols this book is a keeper.
Feel free to rip it apart if you like. It seems like that is what people do nowadays with reviews online.

Lengthy But Worth The Time To Read It
By NinerFan
Initially, the length of the e-book of 757 pages was very daunting to me. However, my curiosity of the life and legacy of Genghis Khan urged me to read this book. To begin with, the author did a wonderful thing by placing the reader squarely on the Mongolian steppes. This was helpful to me in order to visualize and orient myself to the setting of where Genghis lived. The author goes further by describing the climate, flora, fauna, and livestock. By accounting the nomadic pastoralist's way of life, the reader can better understand the Monglol culture and how it affected future military strategy. Their diet that included koumiss (and later more potent alcohol), attire, and religion were also thoroughly discussed.

Nearly 200 pages were devoted exclusively to Temujin's (future Genghis) childhood, his military prowess, and eventual title of Genghis Khan. The military battles were described with great details as are the brutal aftermath of victories. The author's description of battle attire and combat weapons were essential in helping me picture military clashes in my brain. What was most astounding to me about Genghis, among other things, was that he was also an administration genius. His military organization of the decimal system and formation of the Great Yasa (Mongol code of conduct) was fascinating.

My favorite chapters would have to be the conquest of the Khwarezmian Empire and the Eastern Europe. The events were done chronologically with few diversions. One interesting unexpected positive aspect of this book was that the reader will not only learn about the Mongol Empire but also the histories of the other empires. Although the overthrow of the Jin Empire of Northern China had two chapters, I felt at times the battles would tangentially veer off into the life of a Jin General. Also, the era post-Ogodei (he inherited Genghis' empire) was very briefly done in the conclusion. It is understandable that not everything can be included in this book, or it'll just go on and on. In fact, the author preface that in the Author's Note by stating "a definitive biography of Genghis Khan is impossible". I apologize for my verbose review, but I really felt this biography was worthy reading.

“While the Mongols’ military achievements were stupendous, they were otherwise totally parasitic.”
By H. P.
Genghis Khan was the greatest conqueror the world has ever known. He consolidated the disparate clans and tribes of Mongolia. He conquered the Jin (northern China) and Kwarezmian (Persia) empires. “The Mongol empire covered twelve million contiguous square miles—an area as large as Africa and bigger than North America; by contrast the extent of the Roman empire was about half that of the continental U.S.A. . . . The modern population of the countries ruled by the empire at its greatest extent [today] contain three billion of the world’s seven billion population.” He also totally ravaged Oshman’s Sporting Goods.

MyLynn seeks to provide a “synthesis of all the scholarship done in the major European languages in the past forty years relating to Genghis and his sons.” (McLynn covers not only Genghis but the three great khans between Genghis and the break-up of the empire—Ogodei, Guyuk, and Mongke—with Ogodei being the most substantial, taking up multiple chapters.) And indeed one of McLynn’s strengths is discussing the varying scholarly views. His other strength is providing social history. He stumbles when forced to relay events and battles, and it “can sometimes seem no more than an endless recital of massacres with pyramids of skulls.” The other weakness is his writing, which is heavy on $4 words in $2 sentences and tortured metaphors and figures of speech.

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA

McLynn’s book covers much more than you might expect from an ostensible biography of Genghis Khan. He attempts to give a history of the Mongols and the steppe to Genghis. In addition to Genghis’s exploits, McLynn frequently provides contextual information, not only about the later Mongol empire(s) but also about other societies (notably the birth of the Jin Empire). He covers the three great khans to follow Genghis as well as other major Mongol figures, such as Subedei, “who came to Temujin’s camp when he was ten years old, a starry-eyed boy who had spent all his life among the reindeer in the taiga and had never seen the steppe before” before going on to become one of the greatest generals in Genghis’ military meritocracy.

Considerable space is devoted to Genghis’ consolidation of the steppe tribes, his 23 year war against the Jin Empire (only 5 of which Genghis was present for), his conquest of the Khwarezmian Empire, and the invasion of Europe. This is truly history writ large. After vanquishing the Khwarezmian Empire, “Genghis Khan . . . ruled an empire that stretched from the Pacific to the Caspian, from Korea to the Caucasus, and from Siberia to the Yellow River.”
During the invasion of Europe “[i]n three years the two captains and their men rode 5,500 miles—history’s longest cavalry raid—won seven major battles (always against superior numbers) and several minor engagements and skirmishes, sacked scores of cities and revealed the world of Russia and eastern Europe to Genghis.”

HOME ON THE STEPPE

Mongol herdsmen handled five different types of domestic animal: sheep, goats, cattle, horses, and Bactrian camels (sheep were the most valuable, but horses the most valued).
Unlike many horses, the Mongolian horses could “subsist wholly on grazing.” Mongols kept three remounts on campaign and rotated mounts every two hours. This allowed marches as long and fast as 600 miles in 9 days (a record not matched until the era of Napoleon). The Mongols had so many horses they could specialize, using geldings for ambushes instead of stallions or mares, for instance.

Nomads had great advantages over pastoral peoples at war. They could provide twice as many soldiers per capita as pastoralists. Their military speed was a product of the nomadic life. Not only were their soldiers horsemen accustomed to long days in the saddle, camp followers and even families could keep up, and they brought giant herds of cattle and sheep.

A LIMITED BRILLIANCE

As mentioned above, the Mongols were well adapted to wars of conquest. Their mounted archers provided a distinct advantage of the usual infantry of the day, their archery and horsemanship skills were bar none, and they could move fast and they could maintain the pace. They mastered coordinating large armies both on the hoof and in battle, and they mastered light cavalry tactics, the feigned retreat most of all. They were quick to learn siege warfare and incorporate explosives and firearms, and they were artists at subterfuge, especially tactics to inflate their perceived numbers (the Mongols were almost always outnumbered and had “something of a fetish about keeping casualties to a minimum”).

They were an uncivilized people but open to change. They cauterized a wound for the first time in recorded history. They learned siege warfare and incorporated explosives and firearms from the Jin. Genghis was illiterate, but “[w]hen the importance of writing was explained to him, Temujin was impressed . . . with the consequence that Uighur writing became the official script of the Mongol empire.”

But it was a limited brilliance. The empire was never sustainable. It was the pyramid scheme of empires, relying on ever more conquest and tribute. Moreover, subjugated peoples couldn’t be controlled indefinitely when there were one hundred to every single Mongol.

McLynn mentions the aphorism that “you could travel from Palestine to Mongolia with a gold plate on your head and not be molested” without critical examination. Based on his own narrative it seems implausible. Draconian legal code notwithstanding, the Mongols lacked the numbers to effectively police an empire of that scale, and the populations displaced by wholesale slaughter surely led to widespread banditry. (There is also quite a bit on the Yasa, the secret written code of law created by Genghis. But it isn’t very interesting, even to a legal history nerd like me, but it didn’t appear to have much effect at the time let alone long-term.)

PROSE

As mentioned above, the narrative is consistently bogged down by what I refuse to call turgid prose:

“([T]he sources are anything but pellucid.)”
“Muhammed came within an ace of being captured.”
”It took another month for the Mongols to winkle them out.”
“Genghis identified 280 such persons . . . and mulcted them accordingly.”
“[T]he fall of Bukhara had made manifest the manifold latent fissiparous weaknesses in the Khwarezmian empire.”
“This was the moment when the Mongols most clearly impacted on the world of Islam, complicating also the already turbid bouillabaisse that was the Fifth Crusade.”
“Genghis departed this life much as he had lived in it, in a tourbillon of death and bloodshed.”
“When someone else approached him with the begging bowl, his financial advisors tried to kill the request stone dead by pointing out that the man already had massive debts.”
“[W]ithin a week of Ogodei’s death . . . Batu knew of it. This meant that everything in the Mongol empire was now in the melting pot.”

CONCLUSION

So how did Genghis do it? McLynn points to his mounted archers as a great leap forward in military technology, but surely that alone cannot be it. After all, Julius Caesar’s contemporary Crassus was mashed by Parthian mounted archers long, long before Genghis’ time. More important seems their use of horses and incredible mobility, described above, their use of long-distance relay riders and ability to coordinate large armies on the move over long distances, endless adaptability, detailed planning buttressed by war gaming and intelligence from spies, and Genghis’ radical reorganization of Mongol military forces along a decimal system. After Genghis’ death, Mongols were responsible for the first clear use of firearms in a major engagement in 1232 (including a bamboo cannon, which doesn’t sound terribly durable).

McLynn doesn’t attempt to canonize Genghis, but neither is he unfair. His final conclusion, though, is harsh: “While the Mongols’ military achievements were stupendous, they were otherwise totally parasitic. They were unoriginal, founded no new religions, produced no worthwhile cultural artefacts, developed no new crops or technologies (though they transmitted existing ones), created no worthwhile painting, pottery, architecture or literature and did not even bake bread; they essentially relied on the captive craftsmen and experts for everything.”

Thank You For Being Expendable: And Other Experiences, by Colby Buzzell

Thank You For Being Expendable and Other Experiences is an anthology of stories from Iraq war veteran and critically acclaimed author of My War Killing Time In Iraq, Colby Buzzell. From curious observer, to disillusioned combat veteran, to hardened new journalist, Buzzell sheds light on the veteran’s post-war journey back home. Thank You For Being Expendable, a decade worth of stories, thirty-six in all, show one man’s ongoing quest for answers. Thank You For Being Expendable captures the author at various high and low points in his life: battling alcohol addiction and searching for sanity in a broken VA system, being labeled with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, traveling the country to understand the state of our Union, ordering countless tamales in Mississippi Delta, living in San Francisco’s rock bottom Tenderloin District, witnessing Chinese capitalism at its best up close and personal, and experiencing the horror of the September 11th attacks from ground zero. Buzzell has told the stories many chose to ignore. His writing is honest, blunt, unfiltered and totally unromantic as he tells these stories through a lens of a veteran who’s damned to see the world in which we live in a slightly different angle than most others. What does it mean to be expendable? "Buzzell is the rare nonfiction writer who seems equally at ease recounting stories about himself -- his war experience, his struggles with alcohol addiction and post-traumatic stress -- as he is writing about others... a gonzo journalist who makes an art of hanging out." --The San Francisco Chronicle "Thank You for Being Expendable," moves past the war to the struggles of a veteran trying to adjust to civilian life, struggles that are all too common among the troops he sees returning home." --The Military Times "A must-read for anyone interested in what the intersection between military life and counterculture looks like…Few writers capture rejection from society quite so succinctly. However the converse is also true, as Buzzell waves the flag of defiance proudly in the face of nearly every American civil institution... stitching together the rottenness of respectable America and the misery of underclass America, the uselessness of a war that didn’t accomplish anything, and a personal experience of service and combat that beguiled him at first only to ruin him later... ." --The Strategy Bridge "Thank You for Being Expendable is an impacting collection of stories that document the author’s transition from military to civilian life... Buzzell is blunt and spares no one–place, person or himself. He writes like he’s talking to a friend, trusting readers with his hopes and struggles... Throughout the stories, he raises pertinent questions about the struggles veterans face... gripping." --San Francisco Book Review

A Veteran Finds His Voice: Looking Back at a Decade of Writing Post-Iraq
By Kindle Customer
'Thank You for Being Expendable' is an anthology of work by author Colby Buzzell, whose previous books are 'My War' and 'Lost In America.' Mainly a collection of non-fiction, Buzzell's prose is as direct and unadorned as his characters. ("I've been to In-N-Out Burgers bigger than the Butte airport.") Despite the frankness, his descriptions of the people he meets and the places he finds himself are anything but mean-spirited. He has a gift for observing the small details that show us what we need to know, rather than overpowering us with too many words. (On meeting an Austin columnist, he writes, "When we get into his car, I notice several Hawaiian shirts from the cleaners in the backseat". In another piece, he ends up at "the kind of gym where the front parking lot looks like a luxury car lot," and we know exactly what sort of people he will encounter on the Stairmaster before they say a word.

Comparisons with Hunter S. Thompson are inevitable, but only superficially. Thompson chased a story in order to participate, which eventually made him the story and makes Thompson's writing a bit artifical to me in the end. However, Buzzell's stories are more organic, coming from wherever he happens to find himself, no less entertaining, and a lot more insightful. He's not the story; the story is happening around him. This is Colby Buzzell, punk rock skateboarder turned Army veteran turned writer, living his life and telling his truth about everything from the state of the union to life in the Tenderloin and the rise of ISIS.

Buzzell began writing seriously while deployed to Iraq, and all but one of the pieces in this collection were written after Buzzell's service was completed. The events of the Iraq War are not front and center in these writings, but his time in Iraq and in the Army are always lurking along the edges, informing his perceptions of what he encounters. Travels from California to the Mississippi Delta to London and China are chronicled in articles for Esquire. Op-eds and essays on veteran-related topics are also included. The very last piece is a stream-of-consciousness journal entry Buzzell wrote on 9/11 after biking into Manhattan on the morning the towers were hit; for all its roughness, it's a powerful bit of writing, in no small part because of the contrast between the innocence of the writing and the horror of the event.

While the book is not about the war, a good part of it chronicles the experience of veterans returning home. Buzzell and his platoon mates return to a consumer-driven society that can't process how the war has changed these men any more than these former soldiers can accept how little society seems to know about the world outside the mall. Esquire sends him on travel writing assignments, but in between, he and other members of his platoon struggle. It's tough to find work in a civilian world where resumes including weapons proficiency and being cool under fire but no college degree won't even rate an interview for an $8/hr job as a file clerk. (Buzzell's description of his one-day job as a roadside sign-holder is both hilarious and sad.) Some of the veterans, including Buzzell, are eventually diagnosed with PTSD, and several of the most powerful pieces in this collection detail experiences with the under-resourced VA clinics and hospitals as well as a struggle with alcohol.

I think this anthology is great. It was interesting to see how the author's writing and perceptions have matured over the ensuing decade, something I didn't get from reading them in the isolation of a magazine. I'm glad to have them all in one volume now. Every time I dip into this collection, I come away with another nugget, another gem. It does what the best writing does-- it pulls me into the world of another, then leaves me thoughtful and ready for more.

An under-the-radar collection - essential reading that's been strangely overlooked
By Nathan Webster
It's strange how some books hit a wave of cultural attention - and then other equally strong or superior efforts, like this one, are under the radar and unnoticed. I think it might be self-published.

This collection by Colby Buzzell compiles many of his essays and reportage and if you haven't seen his work anywhere else this is a good opportunity to get it all in one place. His first book, "My War," was possibly the earliest example of Iraq War nonfiction and it's hard to believe it came out more than 10 years ago. It's held up as great writing, even if the experiences of the early Iraq War are long-since dated (his second book, "Lost in America" I was less a fan of), Funny to imagine him as an elder statesman of Iraq War literature, but that's what he is.

A lot of writers are compared to Hunter Thompson, and Buzzell shares some of that gonzo ethic - but he has the early discipline of Thompson, when he made you think it was uncontrolled but it was actually well organized and very thoughtful. This is all true of Buzzell's work here, which has that gonzo style to it, while actually being told in a careful narrative form. Buzzell is one of those writers who can just talk to people, and they want to talk with him.

As far as I can tell, this book is not produced by a mainstream publisher, and that's ridiculous. I have read most (all?) of the books in the last 10 years of Iraq and Afghanistan fiction and nonfiction. I like many of those books - but it's a crying shame that this collection hasn't gotten the same attention. It is far superior to many of them, and I say that with no disrespect; but if you want to be well-read about the viewpoints of veterans and the price of the last 15 years of war and death, this book is a solid addition.

These essays are mostly on the post-war experience, which is maybe more valuable than the combat narrative.

You can find many of these essays and reports online, and see for yourself what Buzzell brings to the table. This is a book worth buying (and Buzzell is not totally ignored - he's got recent stories in Esquire magazine, so people are starting to wake up).

THREE FOUR-YEAR TERMS!
By Anee
Hard working Texan Rick Perry indeed has a fighting spirit. This man never lost an election!
From poor beginnings Rick Perry has proved himself a real strong leader.
I like that he offered to end life-time tenure for judges. No one should get that, that is like being a welfare case and yes, that is different thinking from others in politics.
Yet, he is not without controversy with him giving money to people who had helped him in his election and the name of his families hunting camp! And that is not all. He finally withdrew from the 2012 presidential race.
You will have to read this, another great book from Tag to find out why!
Enjoy.

The Many Faces of Herod the Great, by Adam Kolman Marshak

An old, bloodthirsty tyrant hears from a group of Magi about the birth of the Messiah, king of the Jews. He vengefully sends his soldiers to Bethlehem with orders to kill all of the baby boys in the town in order to preserve his own throne. For most of the Western world, this is Herod the Great -- an icon of cruelty and evil, the epitome of a tyrant.

Adam Kolman Marshak portrays Herod the Great quite differently, however, carefully drawing on historical, archaeological, and literary sources. Marshak shows how Herod successfully ruled over his turbulent kingdom by skillfully interacting with his various audiences -- Roman, Hellenistic, and Judaean -- in myriad ways. Herod was indeed a master in political self-presentation.

Marshak's fascinating account chronicles how Herod moved from the bankrupt usurper he was at the beginning of his reign to a wealthy and powerful king who founded a dynasty and brought ancient Judaea to its greatest prominence and prosperity.

Review
Tessa Rajak
— University of Reading
"This substantial and exceptionally well-documented study of Herod the Great will be for a good long time the basic resource for English readers on the grim but brilliantly successful monarch who was one of the shapers of world history. There is no doubt that it is a needed book. .—.—. Adam Kolman Marshak shuttles with the ease and assurance of an expert Roman historian between ground level and the bigger picture, carrying the reader with him all the way."

Donald T. Ariel
— Israel Antiquities Authority
"Applying the valuable reference point of self-presentation to Herod, the famous king of Judaea, Marshak has created an excellent vehicle to more fully understand the larger-than-life man in all of his complexity. In this biography we come to appreciate how Herod navigated in his Roman, Hellenistic, and Jewish worlds."

Achim Lichtenberger
— Ruhr University Bochum
"A clear and well-written analysis of Herod's dynamic career, his politics, and his self-representation as a Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman king. Marshak encompasses all aspects and sources, from texts to architecture to coins. This comprehensive book presents Herod as a model of a client king in the Augustan principate."

Benedikt Eckhardt
— University of Münster
"Writing the history of Herod the Great is not an easy task. Scholars are confronted with a hostile literary tradition and a complex historical background. Marshak meets the various challenges with aplomb. . . . An important contribution both to historical scholarship on Judaea and to more general debates on the art of government."

John J. Collins (from the foreword)
— Yale Divinity School
"A fine contribution not only to the history of Judaea but also to the study of Roman client kingship, and indeed to ancient politics, which have lost none of their relevance in the modern world."

Library Journal
“Marshak effectively develops the historical, cultural, and religious context of Herod’s time.”

Methodist Recorder
“For readers of the New Testament, this study provides much fascinating background detail. . . . A fine study.”

Understanding Herod
By William H. Scarle Jr.
The Herodian family looms large in the New Testament narrative. Martshak has done a commendable task in bringing understanding to the mind of Herod, and by extension, his family. It will be standard for some time.

Complete but not an easy read
By E. Johnson
Marshak puts together a biography of Herod the Great that is thorough, though I have to admit wasn't always easy to read and understand. Perhaps it's because it was scholarly, but there were times I was a bit confused and not quite understanding what was written. But there is plenty of good information in the book. I just enjoyed Norman Gelb's "Herod the Great" more and would recommend it over this, if you had a choice.

The Drummond Girls: A Story of Fierce Friendship Beyond Time and Chance, by Mardi Link

An inspiring and heartfelt memoir about the friendship between eight women forged over two decades.

The eight Drummond Girls first met in 1991 at Peegeo's Food & Spirits in northern Michigan where, at the time, they were all waitresses, bartenders, or regular customers. When one of them got engaged, they celebrated with a trip to Drummond Island--their first trip together to the remote 36-mile chunk of rock, dive bars, dirt roads, and beautiful forests--and it's where they became bonded forever. They've made this voyage every year since then as a way to retain a piece of their wild youth, despite the taming influence of marriage, motherhood, and management. This year, their focus is Beverly, oldest of the Drummond Girls at 65, whose memory is beginning to lapse. Undaunted, the other women intend to help Beverly remember all they've shared--every campfire, every late night talk, every secret confided.

Forget romance. This is love between friends.
By HAR
This book has wit and charm. I love Link's pithy humor which is the hall mark of her writing. If you've read her books before, you know what I mean. But "The Drummond Girls" is different. It has plenty of humor (bear chasing and cop encounters) but Link is really at her best with the reflective, tender moments that come at some of the saddest parts of the story. This book is full of life and hope, but it includes grief, too, which is natural since the book covers a 20-year friendship between 8 best friends.

If you've ever had a group of best friends, or are part of a gang that gets together month after month or year after year, this book is for you. It's wild and irreverent at times, but it speaks to the universal truths of what happens between a group of women who support each other through life's trials. Forget romantic love stories. Drummond Girls speaks to the power of love between friends.

which I only do with really good books. A fabulous summer read
By nancy wallace
I read this cover to cover in one sitting, which I only do with really good books. A fabulous summer read!
Ms. Link is a wonderful writer & this book has it all. She interweaves a truly great memoir with just enough history & geography. Her love & devotion to the Drummond girls shines through on every page. The humor is spot on and her sensitivity remarkable. I laughed with these girls in their adventures & crazy times, all the while remembering my own.
What I find compelling is the way she drew me in to the hard times; the loss & the pain. From anger to denial, the reader almost feels it first hand. When the details ( like absence of nail polish) stick with you long after the last paragraph, you know you've read a remarkable story."The Drummond Girls" speaks to us in a universal language, of long enduring friendships, of picking up where we leave off, effortlessly & joyfully.

Besties for life - the enduring strength of female friendship
By Guerrillagirl01
Someone once said that a good memoir makes you nostalgic for experiences you never had. After reading Mardi Jo Link’s “The Drummond Girls” I pined to be a Drummond Girl myself, a member of an all-girl club made up of women who seem to be as different as they are dedicated to each other and who, for over 20 years, have made an annual weekend trip to Drummond Island, Michigan where they party, laugh and bond. This is the story of a particular group of eight very different women who are there for each other no matter what. While Drummond Girl Mardi Jo Link writes this memoir you will feel as though the Drummond Girls speak as one as they ride over the Mackinac bridge towards three days of belly laughs and beer. You may turn a page and stop to remember your own girlfriends, past and present, who may have been older than you, younger than you, from completely different backgrounds, but understand you in a way no one else can and have been there through thick and thin. “The Drummond Girls” is a true tribute to female friendship and women who need nothing but a weekend a year in each others company to make it through the often lonely and trying times we all share as mothers, daughters and wives.
