About the Author
COLBY BUZZELL is the author of My War: Killing Time in Iraq and Lost In America: A Dead End Journey. Buzzell served as an infantryman in the United States Army during the Iraq War 2003-04. Assigned to a Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Buzzell blogged from the front lines of Iraq as a replacement for his habitual journaling back in the states. In 2004 Buzzell was profiled in Esquire's "Best and Brightest" issue. In 2007, Buzzell received the Lulu Blooker Prize for My War: Killing Time in Iraq. The Washington Post in that same year referred to his article "Digging a Hole All the Way to America" as "A Tour de Force Travelogue," and his article "Down & Out In Fresno and San Francisco" was selected for The Best American Travel Writing 2010. His work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Esquire, The New York Times, Vice, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Daily Beast, Penthouse, Time and on This American Life. Buzzell holds a B.A. from West Virginia University and a MFA in Creative Writing from UCR Palm Desert. Buzzell currently lives in San Francisco, California.

A Veteran Finds His Voice: Looking Back at a Decade of Writing Post-Iraq

'Thank You for Being Expendable' is an anthology of work by author Colby Buzzell, whose previous books are 'My War' and 'Lost In America.' Mainly a collection of non-fiction, Buzzell's prose is as direct and unadorned as his characters. ("I've been to In-N-Out Burgers bigger than the Butte airport.") Despite the frankness, his descriptions of the people he meets and the places he finds himself are anything but mean-spirited. He has a gift for observing the small details that show us what we need to know, rather than overpowering us with too many words. (On meeting an Austin columnist, he writes, "When we get into his car, I notice several Hawaiian shirts from the cleaners in the backseat". In another piece, he ends up at "the kind of gym where the front parking lot looks like a luxury car lot," and we know exactly what sort of people he will encounter on the Stairmaster before they say a word.
Comparisons with Hunter S. Thompson are inevitable, but only superficially. Thompson chased a story in order to participate, which eventually made him the story and makes Thompson's writing a bit artifical to me in the end. However, Buzzell's stories are more organic, coming from wherever he happens to find himself, no less entertaining, and a lot more insightful. He's not the story; the story is happening around him. This is Colby Buzzell, punk rock skateboarder turned Army veteran turned writer, living his life and telling his truth about everything from the state of the union to life in the Tenderloin and the rise of ISIS.
Buzzell began writing seriously while deployed to Iraq, and all but one of the pieces in this collection were written after Buzzell's service was completed. The events of the Iraq War are not front and center in these writings, but his time in Iraq and in the Army are always lurking along the edges, informing his perceptions of what he encounters. Travels from California to the Mississippi Delta to London and China are chronicled in articles for Esquire. Op-eds and essays on veteran-related topics are also included. The very last piece is a stream-of-consciousness journal entry Buzzell wrote on 9/11 after biking into Manhattan on the morning the towers were hit; for all its roughness, it's a powerful bit of writing, in no small part because of the contrast between the innocence of the writing and the horror of the event.
While the book is not about the war, a good part of it chronicles the experience of veterans returning home. Buzzell and his platoon mates return to a consumer-driven society that can't process how the war has changed these men any more than these former soldiers can accept how little society seems to know about the world outside the mall. Esquire sends him on travel writing assignments, but in between, he and other members of his platoon struggle. It's tough to find work in a civilian world where resumes including weapons proficiency and being cool under fire but no college degree won't even rate an interview for an $8/hr job as a file clerk. (Buzzell's description of his one-day job as a roadside sign-holder is both hilarious and sad.) Some of the veterans, including Buzzell, are eventually diagnosed with PTSD, and several of the most powerful pieces in this collection detail experiences with the under-resourced VA clinics and hospitals as well as a struggle with alcohol.
I think this anthology is great. It was interesting to see how the author's writing and perceptions have matured over the ensuing decade, something I didn't get from reading them in the isolation of a magazine. I'm glad to have them all in one volume now. Every time I dip into this collection, I come away with another nugget, another gem. It does what the best writing does-- it pulls me into the world of another, then leaves me thoughtful and ready for more.

An under-the-radar collection - essential reading that's been strangely overlooked

It's strange how some books hit a wave of cultural attention - and then other equally strong or superior efforts, like this one, are under the radar and unnoticed. I think it might be self-published.
This collection by Colby Buzzell compiles many of his essays and reportage and if you haven't seen his work anywhere else this is a good opportunity to get it all in one place. His first book, "My War," was possibly the earliest example of Iraq War nonfiction and it's hard to believe it came out more than 10 years ago. It's held up as great writing, even if the experiences of the early Iraq War are long-since dated (his second book, "Lost in America" I was less a fan of), Funny to imagine him as an elder statesman of Iraq War literature, but that's what he is.
A lot of writers are compared to Hunter Thompson, and Buzzell shares some of that gonzo ethic - but he has the early discipline of Thompson, when he made you think it was uncontrolled but it was actually well organized and very thoughtful. This is all true of Buzzell's work here, which has that gonzo style to it, while actually being told in a careful narrative form. Buzzell is one of those writers who can just talk to people, and they want to talk with him.
As far as I can tell, this book is not produced by a mainstream publisher, and that's ridiculous. I have read most (all?) of the books in the last 10 years of Iraq and Afghanistan fiction and nonfiction. I like many of those books - but it's a crying shame that this collection hasn't gotten the same attention. It is far superior to many of them, and I say that with no disrespect; but if you want to be well-read about the viewpoints of veterans and the price of the last 15 years of war and death, this book is a solid addition.
These essays are mostly on the post-war experience, which is maybe more valuable than the combat narrative.
You can find many of these essays and reports online, and see for yourself what Buzzell brings to the table. This is a book worth buying (and Buzzell is not totally ignored - he's got recent stories in Esquire magazine, so people are starting to wake up).
