Ori Arazi was born in Tel-Aviv in 1962 and was abandoned in
the hospital after his birth. He lived in an orphanage for a year
and three months. Afterward, he was adopted. His father was a
successful lawyer and his mother was a microbiologist. When
he was twenty-seven years old, his father died, and a year later,
his mother died. Several years later, he opened his adoption file
and met with his biological mother and two siblings, who he is
in contact with until the present time.
Erez Maor – Outsider is an episodic novel and each chapter is
a self-contained story. Using first person narration, the book
unravels Erez Maor’s life story after his abandonment by his
mother, a young woman of Yemenite descent, and his adoption
by an affluent couple of Russian-Polish descent. Erez does not
remember his early childhood, but he assumes that he was
adopted because he doesn’t resemble his parents at all. Despite
the deep identity crisis he experienced, he describes most of
his childhood and youth in an optimistic tone – as a child and
youth he finds escape in books and adventures with his friends.

Ten out of ten!

Intense, dark, moody, depresing, yet with a tone of uplifement with a healfy dash of "It will come to pass" for seasoning Erez Maor is an outstanding novel.
The intense description of countless moments of alienation brought about by means which the main character had no control of, namely his birth parents and genetic buildup is quickly followed by the heartwarming knowledge that despite all, our Outsider managed to live trought it all and survive and even thriwe enough mentally and spiritually to put his life's journey on pen and paper.

Finding Himself

From the initial quote that orphans are sentenced to chase their parent’s shadows until the final paragraph, this is a compelling book. Having parents with a darker colored skin as well as being too old to naturally have children established Erez as an “outsider” at an early age. Making matters worse, Erez struggled at school, a struggle that was compounded with parents with high expectations. Erez entered adolescence as a self-described wild child: someone who didn’t fit in wherever he went. Set in Israel , this is an interesting read as Erez attempts to discover who he is. In the process he often associates with others who spent their lives on the outside of mainstream society. Eventually Erez tracks down his biological mother. When is adapted parents die, Erez is forced to make some new decisions about his future. An enjoyable book with a fascinating look at the culture and traditions that surrounded Erez. Chapters include his personal story and thoughts ranging from the Holocaust to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, mixed together with a variety of relationships to find love and purpose.

A must read

This has to be the most truly moving, truly powerful and truly deepest story I have ever read, made even more so by the fact it was not a work of fiction but a true story. Much respect and admiration to Erez Maor, it must have been hard growing up with an identity crisis but with strength, courage and a youthful heart enriched by the wonders of friends and the imagination, he managed to overcome feelings of being an outsider, and find closure when finally meeting his real biological family. This gripping story is a must read
