An insider's explanation of the most esoteric festival in India

Mark Twain said that as far as religion goes, India is the only millionaire. There is greater depth and variety of spiritual practice in India than anywhere else in the world. In fact, many paths have their roots in India, or have gained inspiration there. Yet most books I’ve read about spirituality and religion in India have taken an outsider’s perspective, feigning academic objectivity in order to give an ‘unbiased’ understanding of practices which the author has never tried, and thus has no inkling as to the inner meaning of.
Origins of Rathayatra is not such a book. It is a look at one of the largest, most long-running and esoteric festivals in the entirety of the country, the Rathayatra Festival in Jagannath Puri, Orissa. It is written by a serious practitioner of the path most intimately linked with this festival, namely bhakti-yoga. As such, it’s an intimate and profound account of both the history of the festival and its meaning. If you have a chance to read this and then attend the festival, by all means do. It will help you into the inside of this amazing event.
