About the Author
John J. Collins is Holmes Professor of Old Testament Criticism and Interpretation at Yale Divinity School. His many other books include The Apocalyptic Imagination: An Introduction to Jewish Apocalyptic Literature, Early Judaism: A Comprehensive Overview, and The Oxford Handbook of Apocalyptic Literature.

Understanding Herod

The Herodian family looms large in the New Testament narrative. Martshak has done a commendable task in bringing understanding to the mind of Herod, and by extension, his family. It will be standard for some time.

Complete but not an easy read

Marshak puts together a biography of Herod the Great that is thorough, though I have to admit wasn't always easy to read and understand. Perhaps it's because it was scholarly, but there were times I was a bit confused and not quite understanding what was written. But there is plenty of good information in the book. I just enjoyed Norman Gelb's "Herod the Great" more and would recommend it over this, if you had a choice.
