In this masterful historical biography, Larry Ball, a distinguished historian of western lawmen and outlaws, presents the definitive account of Horn’s career.
Horn became a civilian in the Apache wars when he was still in his early twenties. He fought in the last major battle with the Apaches on U.S. soil and chased the Indians into Mexico with General George Crook. He bragged about murdering renegades, and the brutality of his approach to law and order foreshadows his controversial career as a Pinkerton detective and his trial for murder in Wyoming. Having worked as a hired gun and a range detective in the years after the Johnson County War, he was eventually tried and hanged for killing a fourteen-year-old boy. Horn’s guilt is still debated.
To an extent no previous scholar has managed to achieve, Ball distinguishes the truth about Horn from the numerous legends. Both the facts and their distortions are revealing, especially since so many of the untruths come from Horn’s own autobiography. As a teller of tall tales, Horn burnished his own reputation throughout his life. In spite of his services as a civilian scout and packer, his behavior frightened even his lawless companions. Although some writers have tried to elevate him to the top rung of frontier gun wielders, questions still shadow Horn’s reputation.
Ball’s study concludes with a survey of Horn as described by historians, novelists, and screenwriters since his own time. These portrayals, as mixed as the facts on which they are based, show a continuing fascination with the life and legend of Tom Horn.

Larry Ball is Professor Emeritus of History at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, and the author of five books, including Desert Lawmen: The High Sheriffs of New Mexico and Arizona, 1846–1912 and Elfego Baca: In Life and Legend.

The West at its Best!

Although I have not written a review for some time, I must recommend “Tom Horn in Life and Legend.” Larry Ball does a superb job bringing Tom Horn’s life story together for people like us who love 19th Century Western Americana.
Beside the abundance of outstanding research, the part of this book that was the most important to me was how Ball portrayed Horn in the Apache wars. Unlike other books on Geronimo, Ball gives more mention to Horn and his role in chasing the Apaches. It seems to me that other authors may stray from discussing Horn’s part in the Apache Wars due to his self-promoting book, “Life of Tom Horn: Government Scout and Interpreter.” Yes, he was full of himself and a teller of tall tales, but I appreciate how Ball gave more mention to Horn’s involvement.
The chapters on Horn in Arizona chasing Geronimo and as a hired assassin in Wyoming are great. The chapters on the trial are a bit long but very interesting.
Simply stated, I have always been a fan of Tom Horn’s adventurous life in the West; a packer, cowboy, scout, interpreter, Pinkerton Detective, and hired assassin. In my opinion, this should be the number one book on Tom Horn as it depicts the West at its best.

Not Your "Zane Grey" Western Tale - But Better

Fully annotated - with a very healthy dose of footnotes, a large bibliography, and an amazing index - this exceptional biography of a Western legend is definitely not your average "Zane Grey" tale. The author gets right into just who Tom Horn was and, possibly, how he developed into the legend he remains.
This is not a view of its subject from a single view point. Various other authors and sources have their views presented in comparison, leaving the questions of historical accuracy up to the reader to ponder. True to the availability of documented evidence, the story devotes a proportional ratio (number of printed pages : amount of available evidence) to coverage of Tom Horn's final years; for which a tremendous amount of information exists.
An aficionado of the "Old West," especially in its waning days of being the frontier and its becoming a populated expansion of life from "Back East," would consider this book as a "must have" for his or her personal library.
