One of the best books available on the subject for westerner

This is a great book, giving a balanced pespective on the practice and surrounding aspects of Tai Chi. If you practice Tai Chi and have been looking at the books available, then you probably understand that style specific content isn't very useful for most of us. The differences in styles and instructors combined with the non-photogenic nature of Tai Chi make the photo sections all but useless. This book doesn't spend a lot of time trying to teach the specific movements, but how to feel when doing them. This is the best part of any Tai Chi book, and Horwitz's book has plenty of it. I have been practicing Wu style Tai Chi for 14 years, and am currently working on a College project on my studies.

A mixed bag of a book with a definite New Age slant...

Before I get to what was wrong with the book, I should mention a couple other things. The writing by the authors was very well done, interesting, and often inspirational. I enjoyed it a lot. And I'm not competent at all to judge the quality of the translated tai-chi-related passages because I know no Chinese.
The main problem with the book is that the authors don't know how to do traditional tai chi. (I am not talking about what many Chinese practitioners politely refer to as "American tai chi", a wide range of physical activities that can range from other kung fu styles done in the context of a tai chi form to New Age "moving meditation" to ballet done as a tai chi form. Since American tai chi can be almost anything, a book about "tai chi" has to be about traditional tai chi to convey anything meaningful on the subject.) There are a number of different passages which imply physical ignorance about what tai chi is (and some pictures, but perhaps I'm misinterpreting the captions and they're only meant to be dance shots). I quote a significant one here which will make clear to any halfway-knowledgeable traditional practitioner that the authors don't know what constitutes tai chi: "The basic principles of Tai Chi are the same as those of any effective and efficient physical exercise, whether it be for sport or art." For those not traditionally experienced, the reason this is clearly wrong is that tai chi uses a radically different physical coordination than any normal movement; that's what makes it so very hard to learn or find a competent teacher. As an example, the best baseball player in the world could be efficient, fast, powerful, and graceful but his movement, based on cumulative torque for speed and power, would have nothing to do with how a competent tai chi player moves.
(I should give some of my own background to help a reader validate or dismiss my opinion above. I have been practicing traditional - Chen style, in my case - tai chi for over 25 years, longer if we include a very common American tai chi
style which I took the years when I was starting out and didn't know any better. I am, honestly, lousy at tai chi by any serious traditional standard. However, I have been researching it off and on over that same time period and have watched and played with many, many practitioners, and feel that I can spot a lot of the obvious non-tai-chi done in America. Or obviously wrong explanations and descriptions in books.)
So, to sum up, this book is interesting, inspirational, and enjoyable if you already know how to do tai chi and like the New Age/dance slant. And the translated Chinese passages, particularly some of the Tai Chi "Classics", might be helpful. However, if you aren't already experienced in tai chi, you might find a lot of what the authors, who come from a dance background, write awfully misleading. (And, to be fair, they do clearly state that you can't learn tai chi from a book.) Also, several technically more accurate and more practical books have come out in English in the last ten years or so; they are better guides as to what you actually do.
And a quick apology for my long-windedness to anyone who has borne with me for this long. It's just that it's not like baseball, where everyone is familiar with the underlying subject, and you can just review a book about baseball. I had to touch on tai chi itself for a bit to explain what's wrong with the book.

Tai Chi Ch'uan: The Technique Of Power Is Well Done!

There are tomes of information about Tai Chi everywhere you look. This book does a very good job of synopsis of this subject for someone who wants a broad view of Tai Chi. The book contains enough of a definition of Tai Chi that a beginner can decide what they want from the practice. The historical material supports the basics in such a way that the essence of Tai Chi is easily understood. This is not only a good read, but as the author points out, re-reading over time you can realign your sense of Tai Chi and discover more than one reading can offer.
I would recommend this book to anyone who begins Tai Chi and builds the practice and who will rediscover the teachings outlined in this book as the various layers of experience are performed in mind and body. I definitely am rereading this book over the next years, either from beginning to end or by visiting different sections as I progress.
