“What made me decide to write this book was Nathalie de Saint Criq’s comment on France 2:
Élise Lucet: For the past few days, there has been lots of talk of national unity, but remember, not everyone in France was marching through the streets yesterday.
Nathalie de Saint Criq: [in commiserating tones] Oh no, Élise, we mustn’t be ingénues with rose-tinted glasses... [in a different tone of voice, becoming forceful, authoritarian, almost masculine] it is precisely those who are NOT Charlie that we have to identify; those who, in certain educational institutions, refused to observe the minute’s silence; those who behave like grasses on the social networks and those who don’t see how this battle has anything to do with them. Really, those are the ones we must identify, provide treatment for, integrate, or reintegrate into the national community.
There are so many messages (some of them hidden, others not even remotely) in this mind-blowing message that I don’t even know where to begin. But before diving into the subject, I would like to take a moment to say what this book is not about.
This book is not a pamphlet. It is not a shouting match. It is, in its own very modest way, a brief semantic analysis of Nathalie de Saint Criq’s few little words – which are, moreover, certainly not her own, because we can see her reading the autocue - and of this extremely dangerous and unwholesome little slogan doing the rounds everywhere. As the Maori proverb goes, “The smallest viper has its venom”. “I am Charlie” only consists of thirteen letters and three words, but these three words have been enough to divide the French nation into two factions, ready to go to war against each other”.

This was a taboo and tricky subject – it needed someone like Lucia to lift the lid and dare us to look inside. As a Brit, I found this book and even the whole ‘Charlie Affair’ complicated, since Charlie Hebdo just wouldn’t be published in my country. Britain deals with its multi-faith society quite differently. Moreover, as a Christian who has frequently lived and worked alongside Muslims, I no longer have a simplistic worldview and appreciate intelligent and informed debate. I therefore view ‘Are you Charlie’ as a highly valid point of departure for reflection in Europe right now.

I like the way this book is written and I think ...

I like the way this book is written and I think there are many valid points. It is certainly interesting and even important to get the perspective of a Muslim who does not support the attacks, while at the same time finding the Charlie Hebdo paper distasteful. As Ms. Canovi points out, people were pretty much bulldozed into saying 'Je suis Charlie' even if they had never read the paper and actually found it offensive. It is important not to get swept away by press campaigns without switching on your brain. I guess I also see the other side; the freedom of a satirical paper to do its thing in a country where that isn't illegal, but then that freedom should extend to all, while at the same time perhaps respecting its social context. Food for thought...
