Surprising in many ways

There are many surprisingly modern ideas expressed in this book, which was first published in 1938 and reprinted in 1949. For example, it's suggested that women should continue to work after marriage if they want or need to, and there are ideas for explaining sex to young children in a very basic, truthful way. When finances are discussed, there are surprises of a different kind when in comes to incomes and prices. It's hard to imagine a 3-cent a day health insurance plan, but apparently this was available at the time.
The biggest surprise to me was how much the concepts of eugenics permeate the book. Before I read this book, the word conjured up two things--Hitler's master race, and probably just a few rogue doctors in the US who thought it would be a good idea to sterilize people living in institutions. I had no idea it had been so accepted in mainstream American society. But here is a book published under the banner of a well thought of, middle of the road magazine, containing essays by experts of the day, just chock full of it. This is why I gave it 5 stars--because I think it's important for people to read and understand the thinking of the time.
There's a lot about who is fit to marry and have children, and who isn't; who should be encouraged to have large families and who shouldn't; even the importance of conceiving a child with a sufficient amount of passion and lack of mental strain or worry, lest the baby come out weaker than it should have been! Chapter III, Ought I To Marry, is the most egregious example although the whole book is peppered with it. Honestly, if everyone took the advice in this book, and the only people who procreated were the perfect specimens required here, the human race would have died out in a generation. Nobody is that perfect!

Not as Outdated as some Might Think

I have been married nearly 20 years, and found good advice in this book. It is an excellent book for those about to be married, as well. Some might think it is out-dated, but marriage hasn't really changed since its inception, and this book does acknowledge women as marital partners and not the husband's slave. Excellent book, tried and proven advice.
