On a practical level, Socrates’ death will reflect badly on his friends--people will think they did nothing to try to save him. Also, Socrates should not worry about the risk or the financial cost to his friends; these they are willing to pay, and they have also arranged to find Socrates a pleasant life in exile. On a more ethical level, Crito presents two more pressing arguments: first, if he stayed, he would be aiding his enemies in wronging him unjustly, and would thus be acting unjustly himself; and second, that he would be abandoning his sons and leaving them without a father.

A Classic Work by Plato

Crito was an elderly friend of Socrates who tried to persuade Socrates to escape from the prison where he was to be executed for the crime of "corrupting the youth" of Athens. This ancient story is presented by Plato in dialogue format, which makes it easy to follow (it is an English translation of the original Greek text, which I taught my students to read during my faculty years at Geneva College). All truly educated people should be acquainted with this classic story of Socrates' fidelity to his core principles. I highly recommend it.

This is one of Plato's masterpieces

This short 24-page book is one of the masterpieces by the Greek philosopher Plato where he narrates in dialogue form the last days of Socrates. Socrates has been condemned to die by drinking hemlock by the city of Athens on trumped up charges. He was given the choice of death or banishment and chose the former. His friend and disciple Crito comes to his prison cell in this book and tries to persuade him to escape. It was easy to do so. But Socrates refuses. In the book Socrates explains why he made this decision.
Several reasons why he should or should not escape are discussed. One, which people should especially pay attention to, is should we follow the idea of the masses. Crito tells Socrates that many people want him to escape, and Crito urges him to accept the view of this majority over his own feelings. Socrates rebuffs this argument. If the majority say take a certain medicine that a man knows is harmful, should he listen to the majority. Socrates tells Crito that all of his life he followed the path of reason, and he should not abandon reason now. Another argument is that he and his friends feel that the citizens made a wrong decision, and Socrates should not accept it. Socrates answers that all of his life he obeyed the laws of Athens and the law says he must die; how can he disobey it now just to save his life.

hard reading, but good story. The great Plato is once again writing to make you think deep with in one's self
