An Excellent Re-evaluation of Thebes

Thebes and the Boeotians have traditionally been treated as traitorous, uncultured, members of the Greek cummunity. Since most surviving written history and narrations of the ancient Greeks has been by authors, who were either Athenians or sympathetic to the Athenians, and Athens and Thebes were historically at odds over most of the period, these primary sources have tended to be somewhat slanted against the Boeotians, and especially the Thebians. Demand has attempted to put a more objective view of the Thebians and Boeotian culture. In this she has been successful. I recommend this book as a source of much fairer assessment of the Boeotians and especially their chief city-state of Thebes.
