Logical, compelling arguments against chattel slavery
By Louie Louie
At first, I was worried about this tract of 1860 because of its unanswered title. Was this going to be another slaveowner's support of chattel slavery?

The author Isaac Allen's answer to the question is clearly, "NO." And he answers logically and persuasively.

In the first part of the tract, Allen describes the use of servants and slaves in the Old Testament. He lists the various types of servants and logically describes their actual positions in society, particularly how none of them were ever chattels like the slaves in the South.

Next, he describes the New Testament, pointing out Jesus implied concept of slavery and going on to the apostles' ideas. I specifically liked his excellent explanation of the book of Philemon in which Paul told the slave to go back to his master. This book of the Bible has been used time and again to point out the Biblical support for slavery. And yet, Allen makes it extremely clear that only a shallow reading of the book would lead one to that conclusion and that Paul, on the contrary, was sending back a free man.

Very logical. Very persuasive. And it draws on the same scriptures that slaveowners used to support chattel slavery.

Highly recommended.

a good union (northern) viewpoint
By Amazon Customer
this book does a good job explaining different types of servitude and chattel slavery. slavery has been around from the beggining but that does not give it any moral "seal of approval" by any means shape or form.
