Beginning with Parmenides and Heraclitus, hastening on to a concise, and, even by Gilson and Maritain, unrivaled, summation of the Thomistic Metaphysics of Being, to conclude with a brilliant and fertile discussion of "The Philosopher and the Myth", the book is an example of Existential Thomism at its finest. It will be of value to the beginning student in philosophy and existential psychology; to the academic and professional philosopher for its originality and concentration of insight; and to almost any reader appreciative of a master prose stylist at work in the fullness and at the height of his extraordinary powers.

The BEST version of the Tao te Ching for casual study

For starters, there was no person, Lao Tzu, no one knows how "his" name was spelled, nor can the experts agree on the correct title of "his" work. Is it Tao te Ching? Tao teh King? No one knows.

The Tao te Ching is a collection of aphorisms, little bits of wisdom collected by, arguably, many writers. The most popular and enduring translation is by Legge, though, truth be told, after 40 or so years of study, there is still a lot in his version that I just don't get.

And while I'm a serious student of Taoism, Giles is the book I recommend to my non-Taoist friends. Not that it's a shallow bit of fluff. It isn't. Some of Giles' translation is as obscure as it gets, but he's taken the time to group the material into categories. So there's a cohesiveness to the work. Unlike the original which jumps all over the place, a further indication of its many authors.

Finally, while his translation is not perfectly accurate in an academic sense, it retains a certain mystical quality, almost poetic, that direct translations often lose. Compared to Legge, reading Giles' Tao a pleasure not a chore.

Do not do

Long before Yoda advised "there is no try" Lao Tzu was telling his contemporaries there is no "do." The Tao, he says, is inaction, is allowing nature to take its course. Yet he also said famously that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
I am not going to critique Tao here because I am woefully in this world and have a hard time ignoring it. There is wisdom here but it is not obvious wisdom.
The translation is clear and vivid and lovely. If you are interested in Chinese philosophy this is a good first step in that thousand mile journey.

There are so many messages (some of them hidden, others not even remotely) in this mind-blowing message that I don’t even know where to begin. But before diving into the subject, I would like to take a moment to say what this book is not about.
This book is not a pamphlet. It is not a shouting match. It is, in its own very modest way, a brief semantic analysis of Nathalie de Saint Criq’s few little words – which are, moreover, certainly not her own, because we can see her reading the autocue - and of this extremely dangerous and unwholesome little slogan doing the rounds everywhere. I like the way this book is written and I think ...

I like the way this book is written and I think there are many valid points. It is certainly interesting and even important to get the perspective of a Muslim who does not support the attacks, while at the same time finding the Charlie Hebdo paper distasteful. As Ms. Canovi points out, people were pretty much bulldozed into saying 'Je suis Charlie' even if they had never read the paper and actually found it offensive. It is important not to get swept away by press campaigns without switching on your brain. I guess I also see the other side; the freedom of a satirical paper to do its thing in a country where that isn't illegal, but then that freedom should extend to all, while at the same time perhaps respecting its social context. Food for thought...

Engaging, Important and Insightful

I found Leavitt's work to be very clear, engaging and relevant. I think it would be a very effective textbook both for philosophy and international relations. The book provides a potent critique of political realism on the backs of two great thinkers. Political realism is the norm that is taught in international relations, which not only reinforces the norm, but stifles creative ventures to go beyond it to see what other frameworks can stand the test of close scrutiny.

This work also provides clear groundings for domestic institutions that are often not closely examined (public health, etc), in very much the same way Sen and Rawls revitalize conventional understanding of "democracy" ("rule by conversation," rather than only voting) and Sen with human rights (universal capabilities).

Leavitt's presentations of international arms trade and nuclear proliferation expose these issues in a new light that are not taken as issues in political realism. Arms trade, in particular, is accepted as a sovereign right.

The book is a resource for me and I hope it continues to be a success.

Surprising in many ways

There are many surprisingly modern ideas expressed in this book, which was first published in 1938 and reprinted in 1949. For example, it's suggested that women should continue to work after marriage if they want or need to, and there are ideas for explaining sex to young children in a very basic, truthful way. When finances are discussed, there are surprises of a different kind when in comes to incomes and prices. It's hard to imagine a 3-cent a day health insurance plan, but apparently this was available at the time.

The biggest surprise to me was how much the concepts of eugenics permeate the book. Before I read this book, the word conjured up two things--Hitler's master race, and probably just a few rogue doctors in the US who thought it would be a good idea to sterilize people living in institutions. I had no idea it had been so accepted in mainstream American society. But here is a book published under the banner of a well thought of, middle of the road magazine, containing essays by experts of the day, just chock full of it. This is why I gave it 5 stars--because I think it's important for people to read and understand the thinking of the time.

There's a lot about who is fit to marry and have children, and who isn't; who should be encouraged to have large families and who shouldn't; even the importance of conceiving a child with a sufficient amount of passion and lack of mental strain or worry, lest the baby come out weaker than it should have been! Chapter III, Ought I To Marry, is the most egregious example although the whole book is peppered with it. Honestly, if everyone took the advice in this book, and the only people who procreated were the perfect specimens required here, the human race would have died out in a generation. Nobody is that perfect!

Not as Outdated as some Might Think

I have been married nearly 20 years, and found good advice in this book. It is an excellent book for those about to be married, as well. Some might think it is out-dated, but marriage hasn't really changed since its inception, and this book does acknowledge women as marital partners and not the husband's slave. Excellent book, tried and proven advice.

A shocking story of suicide and mass murder

On March 24, 2015, Germanwings (a subsidiary of Lufthansa) Flight 9525 crashed into the French Alps. All 144 passengers and six crew members were killed. The mystery of what brought down the Airbus A320-211 was solved when the plane's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were recovered. Taking advantage of the captain's brief absence from the cockpit, the plane's first officer, Andreas Lubitz, had locked the captain out of the cockpit and then deliberately flown the aircraft into the side of a mountain.

Two questions then faced investigators:
1. Why did Lubitz do it?
2. Lubitz had a history of mental illness and was being treated by a psychiatrist, who stated that Lubitz was no longer fit to fly. So why did Lufthansa allow him to continue to fly?

Investigators scrutinized Lubitz's life in an attempt to shed light on what drove him to commit suicide and mass murder. There were few answers, but it appeared that Lubitz may have been a "maladaptive perfectionist," someone who sets very high standards for themselves, but feels bitter disappointment, anxiety, and loss of self-esteem when they fail. But even if that description fit Lubitz, it didn't explain why he felt compelled to take his own life and the lives of 149 other people with him.

The author, Jeff Wise, did his own investigation into Lubitz's background and came up with some clues to Lubitz's behavior, but why Lubitz did what he did on that fateful day is still a mystery. The writer for this book is talented and I enjoyed his style

The writer for this book is talented and I enjoyed his style. I actually read this book to the end even though about 80% of it is based on conjecture. Yes, we have the Cockpit Voice Recorder so we know what was said. That is public knowlege. Yes, we also have the Flight Data Recorder so we know what was done on the flight deck. That is also public knowlege. So if you are buying this book to find any "inside" facts that the public does not know about, you will not find them. I DID learn about the training and selection process that Luthansa uses to select their pilot cadidates which is something I did not know and I found that interesting and very different to the way we in the United States select our candidates. In the United States our pilots are selected based on their experience, the amount of hours they have and of course they too must go through a rigorous interview, medical and psychological review. The difference between many of the European Airlines and the United States airlines is that most of the pilots that are hired at the major airlines already have years of experience flying the line and thousands of hours of flight time. Many are former captains for smaller airlines. My point is that they have had years of evaluation from their company and their peers and the ones who have severe mental issues are weeded out long before they get to the interview process with a Major Airline. This book would be very interesting to those who do, or wish to monitor pilot behavior but as far as the aviation enthusiast who wants to know a bit more as to what happened, and why.....there is no new information here. Having said that, again, it was well written, short and informational to a certain aspect if you are interested in the psychy of a "pilot" who "loses it" which after 30,000 hours of flight time for a major airline in the United States, I have never personally seen and of the many things I worry about on a particular flight, this is not one of them.

Great Read

A well written book that anyone can read and comprehend. I agree with Jeff Wise in that it's impossible to know what people are thinking every second of everyday. There are always going to be a very select few of individuals who are capable of doing something horrific like this. Lubitz had to have known in those last few moments what that collision was going to do to his own body. He had a front row seat. But he continued. I really can't think of any cause unless it was conditions set in motion to cause the perfect storm. God bless all the passengers and crew that suffered at the end and knew their fate. Thank you Jeff for all the information that you went to great lengths to provide us with the story. Also my heart goes out to Lubitzs family and all those that knew him. May God bring them some peace and forgiveness

Factless Rant....NOT a book!

The so-called author warns you that he wrote the book beccause he was bored. Long on drama short on facts. If you're looking for someone to commiserate with in hating one group of Americans, this is for you. I challenge Mr. Edwards to find one Southern soldier who actually stated that he fought to keep his black brothers and sisters enslaved. He ignores the fact that West Virginia was admitted to the USA mid-war with her thousands of enslaved people....claiming that slavery was illegal in the North. Just one of the facts that he has completely wrong!!!!

Good read but one sided on the authors part.

The book was a good read. It has good historical information in it. The author, though he claims.to "not have a dog in the fight" is definitely one sided in his comments. Yes there are a lot of rednecks and organizations utilizing the Confererate Flag for their own ( not so good) purposes. To a true Southerner the flag represents Honor to our relatives who fought and died for a cause they believed in, just as our ancestors from the Revolutionary War fought for what they believed in.

I definitely learned a lot when reading this book. Much more than I remember from history classes in school. It was so informative and well written. I enjoyed the little additions by the author that made the book seem more down to earth and reader friendly. I highly recommend this book, from history buffs to just the average reader, it's a great lesson in our countries history.

On a more ethical level, Crito presents two more pressing arguments: first, if he stayed, he would be aiding his enemies in wronging him unjustly, and would thus be acting unjustly himself; and second, that he would be abandoning his sons and leaving them without a father.

A Classic Work by Plato

Crito was an elderly friend of Socrates who tried to persuade Socrates to escape from the prison where he was to be executed for the crime of "corrupting the youth" of Athens. This ancient story is presented by Plato in dialogue format, which makes it easy to follow (it is an English translation of the original Greek text, which I taught my students to read during my faculty years at Geneva College). All truly educated people should be acquainted with this classic story of Socrates' fidelity to his core principles. I highly recommend it.

This is one of Plato's masterpieces

This short 24-page book is one of the masterpieces by the Greek philosopher Plato where he narrates in dialogue form the last days of Socrates. Socrates has been condemned to die by drinking hemlock by the city of Athens on trumped up charges. He was given the choice of death or banishment and chose the former. His friend and disciple Crito comes to his prison cell in this book and tries to persuade him to escape. It was easy to do so. But Socrates refuses. In the book Socrates explains why he made this decision.

Several reasons why he should or should not escape are discussed. One, which people should especially pay attention to, is should we follow the idea of the masses. Crito tells Socrates that many people want him to escape, and Crito urges him to accept the view of this majority over his own feelings. Socrates rebuffs this argument. If the majority say take a certain medicine that a man knows is harmful, should he listen to the majority. Socrates tells Crito that all of his life he followed the path of reason, and he should not abandon reason now. Another argument is that he and his friends feel that the citizens made a wrong decision, and Socrates should not accept it. Socrates answers that all of his life he obeyed the laws of Athens and the law says he must die; how can he disobey it now just to save his life.

Complex collection with hints of promise

There is a telling line in this often confused and overlapping collection of work: "For the readers that haven't given up yet".

Often muddled and trying to do too much is a constant theme with this book. It started well with a strong look at loneliness versed eloquently in poetry form. In between this reflection there is small hints at darker poetry.

Unfortunately this starts loses its flow with more introduction of filler poems and muses. This distorts much of the good ground that was previously laid before the reader.

Hoping for a better finish it moves on to thoughts that have a depressive state, but do not really add to the book. Finally short stories are added, which again do not build on the beginning.

As is often a common theme with such pieces of work, trying to mix different styles dilutes the enjoyment rather than enhancing it. Poetry selection, structure and flow are key elements for the poet to work on for future work.

The unforgiving tone of the poem 'those hours' is a way forward and also a sentiment the reader will feel taking in all the complexities of this book.

Yet as is often the case, if you do not give up from the confusing structure of this book there are some gems and noteworthy exploration that hint at promise.

The book was gifted by the author himself.
Blades and Vicious Smiles is the collection of poems, stories and some important quotes by the author Stoyko-Rusev who managed it better to portray his feelings better through his debut work.
The book focuses on the materialistic and psychological aspects of the human being that are lost somewhere without getting noticed by anyone.

It touches your heart and makes you think otherwise to the traditional path we have been following.
First of all author could have worked a little on editing and compilation that would have made a little clear in Reader’s mind that what they want to read.
