So Good You Will No Longer Fear Death

When I say this book is so good you will no longer fear death I'm kidding, of course...but, strangely, only a little.
You might assume that John Vorhaus titling his newest book "How To Live Life" must be a joke, and when you actually read a couple of chapters you would find that the title is a clever word play. But this book is no joke. It's all right there in the title!
And I think he might have just cracked it!
I have read tons of books by people like Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra and Ekhart Tolle, and this book may top them all. It certainly stands proudly right beside them!
In his fun, unassuming way, Vorhaus opens his heart and mind to you and recruits you on a journey to figuring out what works and doesn't work in your life, and offers tools to make the nonfunctional parts function!
Described that way, it sounds like an insurmountable task, but he breaks it down for us into much smaller, more manageable tasks. And, being John Vorhaus, he makes it fun!
There's no psychobabble here, no metaphysics, no pseudoscience, just new ways to look at the age old problem of how to have more good days than bad.
It's a quick read, too. So quick I am going to re-read it immediately. (I was so eager to devour this one that I skipped most of the exercises. I look forward to doing them this time, and seeing just how much more I get out of the book!)
I have yet to be disappointed in anything John Vorhaus has written, but there's something special about this one. Vorhaus' non-fiction always feels like he's in the room with you, two buddies having a cool conversation, but... I'm not sure how to explain it; this one feels more intimate, like he's letting you all the way inside his head, sharing his most valuable and useful wisdom with you.
There is a Buddhist saying that enlightenment is like a jewel sewn into the lining of your coat. You go through life thinking you're poor, starving and begging for food, but all the while you're filthy rich and you just don't know it.
This book is like John Vorhaus is showing us how to un-stitch our jacket to get to the jewel we've been carrying around all this time.

How to Live Life

As a rule, I'm not a fan of self-help books. But I am a fan of John Vorhaus, having read and benefited from several of his books on poker nine or ten years ago and after getting an ereader, reading and liking a novel and one of his non-fiction offerings. His irreverent writing style and his humor keeps things light, while still being serious when the subject requires it. I was torn, so I decided to read a sample before making the decision to read this book, which I rarely do.
The title of the first chapter, “where i get off,” (yeah, that lack of capitalization is a style choice) promised to address my biggest concern, as did the first few lines:
"So, first question…
Where the do I get off writing a book called how to live life?
After all, I have no credentials in psychology, theology or any other –ology. Nor have I scholarship in philosophy, theosophy or any other –osophy. Indeed, I bear no academic qualifications of any kind, bar the lowly BA that got me my first job out of college and hasn’t done much for me since..."
He then proceeds to make his case. If you're interested in the details, check out the sample. After having read the book, I have my own explanation.
Do you have a friend or family member who is your go-to person for advice? They're non-judgmental. They may or may not have any expertise in the area you're struggling with, but by listening and asking questions they lead you (or sometimes actually help you lead yourself) to the right answers?
To me, How to Live Life is the book equivalent to that person. A lot of life's bigger questions and the right answer for you (which is different than the right answer for me, or anyone else) comes from self-awareness. They come from figuring out what makes you tick. From your purpose in life and the things you're passionate about. Vorhaus asks the questions to help you focus on what the right answers are for you, rather than telling you what he thinks your answers should be. (Much different from many self-help books.) He'll give some of his answers, not claiming they're the right answer for you (many obviously aren't), but as examples to help you understand the questions better. You'll still want to go to that friend sometimes for advice (after all, their purpose and passion might be to help others), but we can all use more help, right? How to Live Life is a way to help ourselves.

A fun and interactive book to gain perspective.

My Review: This one is quite outside my normal comfort genres, but when John contact me regarding a review, it struck me a just the right time (not to mention I have enjoyed the previous books I have read by him). This was really a unique read and experience, it is meant to be read as an interactive book to guide you into some understanding of yourself and the way you go through life. I participated as best I could and found it actually very useful and inspiring (of course it also helped that he spoke to my list making obsession). One of the first lists he asks you to make is of the things you would not do any longer if you had less than 6 months to live, I found this interesting since so often people think about the things you would try to fit into that time. One of the things I wouldn't do any more is drive, I hate driving, I get horrible road rage and my frustration and stress rises every time I get behind the wheel. He then takes those items and dives further into why you wouldn't do those things and ways to either eliminate them or make them not so hated. Granted there are many more elements to this book but that is just an example of what I gained and used throughout the book. It was a great book to pick through and use as you see fit in your own life and it would be interesting to revisit a few years down the road to see how it has changed in accordance to your life. I really enjoyed how he used personal examples with his own findings, it made it a less clinical book. It did ramble a little much some times and I would find myself zoning out but then there would be a quote or a question that brought me right back.
My Rating: This was an unusual read, it wasn't quite what I was expecting but it was good. I have definitely taken pieces of the book and applied it to my own life and gained a little perspective. I give it a rating of Three Paws.
