About the Author
William Ellery Channing (1780 – 1842) was the foremost Unitarian preacher in the United States in the early nineteenth century and along with Andrews Norton, (1786-1853), one of Unitarianism's leading theologians. He was known for his articulate and impassioned sermons and public speeches, and as a prominent thinker in the liberal theology of the day. Channing's religion and thought were among the chief influences on the New England Transcendentalists, though he never countenanced their views, which he saw as extreme. The beliefs he espoused, especially within his "Baltimore Sermon" of May 5, 1819, at the ordination of a future famous theologian and educator in his own right, Jared Sparks, (1789-1866), as the first minister (1819-1823) of the newly organized (1817) "First Independent Church of Baltimore" (later the "First Unitarian Church of Baltimore (Unitarian and Universalist)"). Here he espoused his principles and tenets of the developing philosophy and theology of "Unitarianism" resulted in the organization later in 1825 of the first Unitarian denomination in America (American Unitarian Association) and the later developments and mergers between Unitarians and Universalists resulting finally in the Unitarian Universalist Association of America in 1961. In later years Channing addressed the topic of slavery, although he was never an ardent abolitionist. Channing wrote a book in 1835, entitled, "SLAVERY" James Munroe and Company, publisher. Channing, however, has been described as a "romantic racist" in "Black Abolitionism: A Quest for Human Dignity" by Beverly Eileen Mitchell (133–38). He held a common American belief about the inferiority of African people and slaves and held a belief that once freed, Africans would need overseers. The overseers (largely former slave masters) were necessary because the slaves would lapse into laziness. Furthermore, he did not join the abolitionist movement because he did not agree with their way of conducting themselves, and he felt that voluntary associations limited a person's autonomy. Therefore, he often chose to remain separate from organizations and reform movements. This middle position characterized his attitude about most questions, although his eloquence and strong influence on the religious world incurred the enmity of many extremists. Channing had an enormous influence over the religious (and social) life of New England, and America, in the nineteenth century.

The more blatant thetransgressions of our politicians, the more fragmented and directionless the agenda and response of the liberal-progressive class has become.The voice of the left has been both silenced and marginalized. Frustrated with the state of US politics and politicians? I am. Vote for the same people in the same national party who've clearly sold out to big business? If not them, then who? John Rachel comes up with a very workable solution that puts everyone on the line to be responsible, and that is make candidates sign a legal contract to do what we (the voters) want them to do for us. Brilliantly worked-out, this is a book that I highly recommend for everyone to read.

About the Author

I learned a number of useful things from this book

A Christian philosopher with a PhD in Islamic Thought, Richard Shumack has written a very readable comparison of the philosophical underpinnings of Christianity and Islam. The book is dedicated to an Islamic scholar of his acquaintance, and the tone of the book is deeply irenic; Shumack positions himself as a truth seeker seriously looking into various muslim critiques of Christianity. One of the basic premises of his approach is 'no special pleading', that is in this situation no question can be usefully answered by recourse to 'the Qur'an says' or 'the Bible says' as if that settles the matter. While by no means attempting to 'prove' the Christian position, Shumack more modestly hopes to demonstrate that muslim claims that various aspects of the Christian world view are immoral, incomprehensible or plain unreasonable are themselves unjustified. Each chapter addresses a particular critique of Christianity, and while on one level the argument is cumulative, the chapters can be read individually. The areas addressed are : certainty of belief, God's hiddenness, human sin, the trinity, the incarnation, the cross, revelation, ethics, and politics.

While not a complete beginner as far as thinking about either Christianity or Islam, I learned a number of useful things from this book. I found particularly thought provoking the chapters about God's hiddenness, human sin and the one about politics. One of the over arching themes of the book is comparing the Islamic legislative model with the Christian fellowship model of interaction between God and humanity. While from a common sense point of view, or the position of the legislative model much of Christian belief seems foolish, if one takes on board the fellowship model the claims of Christianity can be not simply reasonable, but beautiful.

This is one of the best books about both Christianity and Islam. I learnt a lot about my own faith, juxtaposed with Islam. There are many new ideas in this book, and it goes far deeper than most of this genre. It is not an easy read, but definitely rewarding and well worth the effort.

Great Gift for Any Would-Be Good Citizen or Patriot

Our 22nd AND 24th POTUS deserves to be remembered far more than he is and for more than merely being our only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. While he is arguably not to be numbered among our greatest presidents, Grover Cleveland's character, his honesty, integrity, patriotism, frugality with the taxpayers' money, and courage to stand against corrupt politics from either party, makes him tower above every other president elected by our senior political party from Jefferson to Obama,...

and over virtually all non-Democrat-Party presidents.

This is a reprint of a hundred year old book itself posthumously reprinting a couple of speeches given by the former president a few years before he died, and with few exceptions his remarks are as relevant today as they were more than a century ago.

In the first address on "Good Citizenship" delivered in 1903 Mr. Cleveland takes to task those Americans who think themselves too good to get involved in the sordid business of politics, reminding them that if people of good character refuse to dirty their hands, except by voting (when it's convenient), they guarantee that the political corruption they condemn will continue and only get worse.

In the second address on "Patriotism and Holiday Observance" delivered on Washington's Birthday in 1907 Mr. Cleveland takes to task Americans for neglecting to observe public holidays, particularly "commemorations of the birth of American heroes and statesman who have rendered redemptive service to their country in emergencies of peace and war" with the proper spirit and attention to why we are celebrating them.

Chances are that he would take a dim view of our modern tendency to celebrate them with little more than three day weekends and shopping specials.
