Great Gift for Any Would-Be Good Citizen or Patriot

Our 22nd AND 24th POTUS deserves to be remembered far more than he is and for more than merely being our only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. While he is arguably not to be numbered among our greatest presidents, Grover Cleveland's character, his honesty, integrity, patriotism, frugality with the taxpayers' money, and courage to stand against corrupt politics from either party, makes him tower above every other president elected by our senior political party from Jefferson to Obama,...
and over virtually all non-Democrat-Party presidents.
This is a reprint of a hundred year old book itself posthumously reprinting a couple of speeches given by the former president a few years before he died, and with few exceptions his remarks are as relevant today as they were more than a century ago.
In the first address on "Good Citizenship" delivered in 1903 Mr. Cleveland takes to task those Americans who think themselves too good to get involved in the sordid business of politics, reminding them that if people of good character refuse to dirty their hands, except by voting (when it's convenient), they guarantee that the political corruption they condemn will continue and only get worse.
In the second address on "Patriotism and Holiday Observance" delivered on Washington's Birthday in 1907 Mr. Cleveland takes to task Americans for neglecting to observe public holidays, particularly "commemorations of the birth of American heroes and statesman who have rendered redemptive service to their country in emergencies of peace and war" with the proper spirit and attention to why we are celebrating them.
Chances are that he would take a dim view of our modern tendency to celebrate them with little more than three day weekends and shopping specials.
Note: One could complain that this book is available online for free. Well, yes, what part of in the public domain do you not understand? However, trying to get away with giving someone a printout as a gift will earn you the nickname of cheapskate. If all you want to do is read it yourself, then by all means stick to the free sites. However, if you are looking for a way to get through to someone else, you are better off buying a copy, and a solitary sawbuck for this sturdy pocket-sized reprint is going to be tough to beat. The chief virtue of it being online is your ability to read it first and make sure that this is the book you want to give before ordering it.
