About the Author
John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873)

John Stuart Mill, FRSE (20 May 1806 – 8 May 1873) was a British philosopher, political economist and civil servant. He was an influential contributor to social theory, political theory, and political economy. He has been called "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century".

From the Inside Flap
Together, these two essays mark the philosophic cornerstone of democratic morality and represent a thought-provoking search for the true balance between the rights of the individual and the power of the state. Thoroughly schooled in the principles of the utilitarian movement founded by Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill nevertheless brings his own unique intellectual energy to issues such individual freedom, equality, authority, happiness, justice, and virtue. "On Liberty is Mill's famous examination of the nature of individuality and its crucial role in any social system that expected to remain creative and vital. Utilitarian brilliantly expounds a pragmatic ethic based on one controversial proposition: actions are right only if they promote the common good and wrong if they do not. While much of Mill's thinking was eventually adopted by socialists, it is in today's democratic societies--with their troubling issues of crime, freedom of speech, and the boundaries of personal liberty--that his work resounds most powerfully.

From the Back Cover

In this work, Mill reflects on the struggle between liberty and authority and defends the view that “the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.” He questions attempts to limit freedom of conscience and religion, freedom to pursue one’s own interests, and freedom to unite, and he defends a liberal political and social order in which there is considerable room for personal development and freedom of association.

This new Broadview Edition demonstrates the ways in which Mill’s intellectual landscape differed markedly from our own, while also drawing attention to the reasons why the work remains relevant and essential reading in the present day. Appendices include antecedents to Mill’s work, critical discussions by his contemporaries, and related writings by Mill.

Please note: Broadview offers two separate editions of On Liberty. The Kahn edition is particularly relevant to readers who are interested in how the work is situated in the history of political philosophy, whereas the Alexander edition is recommended to those most interested in the work’s Victorian literary and social contexts.

More relevant today than in 1859 :(
By B. Alcat
John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was interested in the nature of Civil Liberty, and the limits to the power that a Government can legitimately exercise upon its citizens. He believed that some worrying tendencies could be observed in the England society of his time, and tried to warn others about them.
The author basically explains his ideas regarding the preservation of individual liberties, not only due to the fact that they are rights owed to everyone, but also because they benefit society as a whole.
For example, when he says that liberty of thought and of discussion must be preserved, he tells us that "Wrong opinions and practices gradually yield to fact and argument: but fact and arguments, to produce any effect on the mind, must be brought before it". How can mistaken beliefs or actions be proven wrong, if dissent is forbidden?. The loss for society is clear: "If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error".
In order to preserve the liberties included in the concept of Civil Liberty, the author points out that there must be limits to the action of the Government. He says that "The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others". Any other reason is simply not good enough. Thus, Stuart Mill highlights the rights of the individual, but also the limit to those rights: the well-being of others.
"On Liberty" is not too long, and I think you are highly likely to enjoy it, if you can get past the first few pages. The problem is that even though the ideas in this book are quite modern, the language is somehow dated. But then, we must remember that "On Liberty" was written a long time ago...
Notwithstanding that, do your best to read the first pages, and you will realize that after a while it will be much easier. This book is well-worth the effort you need to make at the beginning, because it is even more relevant today than when it was first published, in 1859.
Are individual rights important?. Why?. Do they have a limit?. You will found the answer for these questions, and much more, in "On Liberty". What else can I say?. I believe this is a book that will help you to reflect on many important issues... I certainly can't think of a better reason to read it. All in all, recommended :)

Liberty based on utilitarianism rather than human rights
By Derek Jones
This Kindle edition has an introduction written more than a century ago that offers no insight into Mill's essay and deals almost entirely with the relationship between Mill and Harriet Taylor. It is therefore primarily of general rather than academic interest.

"On Liberty" is one of the most important books on political thought of the nineteenth century. Fortunately for the 21st century reader it is also one of the most accessible. Mill was a libertarian who chose not to base his defence of liberty on natural rights but on his own revised version of utilitarianism:
"I regard utility as the ultimate appeal on all ethical questions...grounded on the permanent interests of man as a progressive being."
This enables Mill to argue that freedom is needed if man is to be able to explore all the avenues of human development that allow the human race to progress. Total freedom is impossible so what determines the legitimate boundaries of freedom? Mill distinguishes between self-regarding and other-regarding actions. The former should never be interfered with and the latter subject to limitation only if they harm the legitimate rights of others.

For Mill free thought is a self-regarding action which should not be curtailed, and free thought is virtually useless without free speech. Mill then proceeds to add a utilitarian argument in favour of free speech: if an opinion is silenced then mankind is necessarily the loser whether the opinion is true or false. He advances a number of arguments to support this, concluding with the claim that a climate of freedom is essential for "great thinkers" and "it is as much, and even more indispensable to enable average human beings to attain the mental stature they are capable of." He has no truck with paternalists seeking to guide people's thoughts in the "right" direction. He was equally hostile to the idea that people had the right not to be offended; hence he opposed the blasphemy law. The single case Mill gives of an acceptable limitation of free speech is the case of corn-dealers and an excited mob. An opinion expressed in a newspaper that corn-dealers are "starvers of the poor" is legitimate, but the same view stated to an angry mob outside the corn-dealer's home may be limited if it "is a positive instigation to a mischievous act."

Mill concedes that actions cannot be as free as speech and seeks to establish the proper limits of freedom of action. Mill proposes that "the sole end for which mankind are warranted...in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number is self-protection." Because he rejects paternalism he opposes all interference with self-regarding actions. Mill would not have prevented people from taking drugs and he would have led the opposition to seat belt legislation. Mill even rejects state interference with liberty for the sake of crime prevention, e.g. poisons can be used for criminal purposes. Mill was willing to accept a register of their sale but not the banning of them. Mill believes we must not interfere with the "rights"of others but these are narrowly circumscribed and Mill makes it clear that "rights" are not the same as "interests". Hence cut-throat laissez-faire is legitimate. As for moral decency arguments Mill does say that sexual intercourse in public is unacceptable, and though fornication and gambling are acceptable he is in two minds about whether pimps and casino-owners should be allowed to operate. Mill says it is a difficult case that is on the borderline, but adds that in general we must resist attempts to limit behaviour for "moral" reasons because any such action is likely to be the thin end of the wedge.

Though Mill is a very determined anti-paternalist he makes three exceptions: children, primitive societies and the disabled. Children must be guided until they reach maturity and they must be given compulsory education - something not given legislative force when he wrote. As for primitive societies, we must resist the notion that Mill was a typical Victorian believing in the "white man's burden" or inherent differences between races. He simply observed the reality of the world in the mid-nineteenth century but made it very clear any intervention in backward societies must be temporary with the aim to bring about self-government as soon as possible.

Hence Mill was a much more determined libertarian than most modern writers on the subject. There is just one example where, at first sight, Mill may seem reactionary to modern readers. He wished to restrict the right to have children to those who could prove that they could support them. However, those who today wish others to be allowed to procreate at will do so on the grounds of human rights. Mill based his theories on utilitarianism, and not on rights. There was no welfare state when Mill wrote "On Liberty" and he was concerned with the well-being of children born to people without the means to support them.

In view of the alleged growing restrictions on freedom in many democratic countries this is a book well worth reading. In particular I like Mill's argument that every restriction on freedom is the thin end of the wedge, providing a justification for further restrictions.

On Liberty: More Relevant Than Ever
By Len Hart
In his classic essay "On Liberty", John Stuart Mill deals with the issue of "civil liberties" -not the metaphysical issue of "free will". While most attacks on civil liberties have historically occurred from the right within the context of a tyrannical or an aristocratic rule, Mill deals with threats against liberty from within the institutions of democracy itself. The issue is especially relevant at a time when widespread domestic wiretapping and surveillance violates the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The aim of early libertarians was to limit the power of the ruler over those governed; Mill, however, identifies a need to limit the power of elected governments and officials as well. Mill is not merely addressing the issue of "who should rule?", he seeks to establish limits on the power that government may exercise over minorities and individuals. His work is more relevant now than ever.

While "government of the people" is an ideal to be aspired to, Mill argues that such an ideal is often not the case in fact. He argues that those exerting the power of the government -elected officials, bureaucrats, the judiciary -often develop their own interests. They are sometimes influenced by those constituencies in ways that are at odds with the interests and liberties of individuals or other groups.

Mill makes no distinction between a tyranny of one and a tyranny of many. A tyrannical majority running roughshod over the rights of individuals and minorities is no less a tyrant because it is a majority, because it is elected, or because it is elected by a majority.

While society may not tolerate criminal behavior, for example, society may not legitimately interfere with or suppress all non-conforming behaviors indiscriminately or because a majority may not approve. What then are the powers that society may legitimately exercise over the individual? Mill answers:

"The only purpose for which power can be rightly exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others."

-J.S. Mill, On Liberty

James Madison -called the "Father of the Constitution" -may have anticipated Mill's ideas in his draft of the Bill of Rights -the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Implicit in the Bill of Rights is the recognition that the power of the state is a blunt instrument. Abused, it can oppress and repress individuals and minority groups alike. The Bill of Rights addresses this issue by guaranteeing "due process of law", limiting state power over individuals and groups, guaranteeing that groups and individuals may speak freely, worship freely.

The Fourth Amendment specifically is a promise that our government made to us in its very founding:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

-Fourth Amendment, Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution

Let's make something abundantly clear: there are no "inherent powers", "Implicit" authorizations" that would, in any way, overturn, limit, or repeal the Fourth Amendment. Many politicians are not only wrong about that, they may have deliberately lied about it. Moreover, Congress may not overrule the Fourth Amendment with statutory law. Constitutional Law is supreme and provisions in the Bill of Right are valid until amended as set out in the Constitution itself. Widespread domestic surveillance is illegal whatever is done by Congress ex post facto -and until the Constitution is amended, it will remain illegal. At last, ex post facto laws, themselves, are expressly forbidden by the Constitution.

Mill is all the more remarkable for his insight into issues that remain contemporary. In every literate criticism of "special interest groups", PAC's, the gun lobby, the tobacco lobby, the Military/Industrial Complex, one sees the lasting influence of John Mill.

On Liberty is essential reading for anyone interested in law, the principles of government, political science, political philosophy, indeed, freedom itself. It is also essential reading for anyone interested in learning about the intellectual underpinnings of Anglo-American civil liberties.

I have been scouring the tables of content which summarize well the perspectives of these volumes. I would like to know if the fusions of words were in the original printing . . . .
I am appreciative of fact that this book is not just a history but an artifact of history: it is an artifact that preserves a self-portrait and grasp of myth of origin from the 19th century and a particular tradition, namely the 'old light' Free Church tradition . . . . And it makes ever so clear that, at some point in time, some Scots were clear that they were Irish in origin and that Ireland was the homeland . . . and not a foreign land . . . .I appreciate the perspective because my family's Scots born when this book was published were convinced that they were not Irish (when the DNA haplo group is old Irish Type 3) . . and many ethnic Irish do not seem to recognize that Scots Irish are not just Scots transplanted to Ireland but a certain group of ethnic Irish called Scots.
I see these volumes as telling a grand story--the story of origin--that was held by probably more Scots than just the author of this 'history.' So this is much like time-travel for the acculturated Scots of the diaspora and Scots who have been anglicized since union w/ England, a trip that will explain a lot of history.
By the bye, one of the reviewers does not know that 'corn' is what Scots call barley. I not think the Rev Wiley was inebriated.

Rev. Wylie published his first of three volumes in 1886. The first traces Scottish history from the beginning, or Prehistoric age to early Christianity. This volume is published with Rev. Wylie's English of the time and a good Oxford dictionary is said to be helpful. I did not find this to be the case. don't think that this is a tome to be consumed at once, but rather studied ove the course of months. The second and third volumes bring us up to date if we lived in 1286. He died before he could inform us about Braveheart.

Needs professional editing
By Connie
The author has good intentions with this story, about a soon-to-be 14-year-old boy Puvi (short for "Pure Virtue") who meets the king spirit in a vision who eventually guides him to monkhood. But until Puvi becomes a Buddhist monk, he spends his summer days with his friends doing what boys his age do: they ride their bikes around their area villages to spend time with their peers and to spend time along the ocean. This is the nice part, as the author describes the tropical surroundings as they were in 1967 Malaya.

But there is a disconnect and the story comes across as choppy and full of gaps. Sometimes Puvi's observations sound like those of a wisened adult, but then he'll turn around and comment on his friend's unexpected erection, or he'll mutter an expletive. The sudden changes in mood and voice feel stifled and take away from the author's intent to impart some Buddhist philosophies. It is Puvi who is the center of all the characters in this story, and the relationships he has with some of the English and Scotsmen are revealed slowly as the chapters move on.

The other disconnect is the other story in this narrative, of the wealthy Britons in Malaya who fear for their safety as another "Emergency" has been announced. The main English characters here, Peter, Stella and a few others, all come across as one-dimensional. There is no character development or steady plot and too many people appear who have no other appearances in the story. The "East meets West" thus feels contrived and not well-connected, although there are some nice parts where the Christian English mingle with the Islamic and Buddhist locals. One learns that "a champion is always a 'he'" through dialogue with Puvi and his friends. Malaya history is revealed as it unfolded during World War II. Not all the native speak is translated for the reader, which is another hurdle to overcome.

The biggest weakness, however, is the poor grammar. English is clearly not the author's native language. A few errors wouldn't bother me, but there are glaring grammar, syntactical and semantical errors all throughout this read. In fact, this story needs a professional editor to smoothen the narrative out as the intent of the author gets sidetracked by the gaps in the story and the poor English.

A book for specific tastes, badly in need of a lot of TLC
By J Bryden Lloyd
Book Review: Puvi – Buddha Highway
by Teck C Neo
Reviewed by J Bryden Lloyd

Note: I was gifted a copy of this work for an honest read and review. The following review, as with all reviews, is my personal opinion of the submitted text.

Writing Style – 2.5/5.0 (Average)
It was hard to find the underlying structure of the story, as the book seemed to ebb and flow in a rather haphazard manner.

I can only really attribute this to the author’s first language NOT being English, as the effect on both narrative and dialogue was to produce a very jerky, sometimes clunky, sometimes over-formal text.
In fairness, it is clear that the author does have a good grasp of English, but the translation of this knowledge into written English is not of a particularly high standard, which does have a huge effect on the structure and readability.

The dialogue did not read very well, especially for the characters who were supposedly British. Terminology was often wrong, as was the vast majority of sentence structure, meaning that it was too easy to lose track of who was saying what. In fact, I found a good number of the conversations and exchanges between characters to be empty and without purpose.
At later points in the book, capitalised repetition of words and terms in the dialogue feel very childish and definitely unneeded. By this stage, I will admit I was losing interest in the book.

Character Development – 2.0/5.0 (Poor)
Although there are some very likeable characters, I really did not feel that any of them, beyond Puvi himself, really got chance to develop.
A lot of emphasis seemed to be placed on giving several primary and secondary characters very elaborate back-stories; the problem was that, for the most part, they were very difficult to follow and mostly unnecessary for the story, or served to give you information at very odd times.

I struggled to relate to any of the characters, and often got lost when one of a plethora of very random, unnecessary characters suddenly appeared in discussions or event descriptions. Indeed, the actual relationships between the characters (although explained) are far too complex to be arbitrarily dropped onto the unsuspecting reader, but this seems to be the norm throughout the book.

For me, this felt like a character-driven story with too many incidental characters being dropped into it (either by being present or just mentioned by name, with no explanation) and this stifled the read too much.

Descriptive – 3.5/5.0 (Good)
The big thing with the descriptive is that, when it was there it was very good, especially for the locations and atmospherics which were often excellent in their vivid detail.
Without doubt, the author showed a mastery of scene building throughout the read.
Unfortunately, beyond the opening few chapters, that mastery is never applied to the characters.

Occasionally, the scenes shifted in and out of what I would describe as ‘ethereal sequences’, where Puvi conversed or met with either other deities, or with characters. To me, these sequences seemed almost devoid of anything other than the conversations, thoughts or actions of one or two characters, and very often this switch was instantaneous within the read, which made everything feel a little confusing.
The descriptive revolving around the relationships between the characters often felt awkward, also.

There were a number of scenes where things felt broken, or when the timeline jumped back and forth, which made things far too complicated.

On occasion, it felt as though the author was holding back key details about the scene and the characters but keeping less important detail at the forefront, reverting to telling a story, rather than allowing the reader to feel their way through the plot and become involved.

Language & Grammar – 2.0/5.0 (Poor)
The biggest problem here goes back to the translation from a knowledge of spoken English, to very haphazard written English. A commonly used example is the word ‘munching’, for eating… a very childish word used by the author throughout. The occasional use of ‘mom’ and ‘mum’ by the same character in the same conversation.
There are a number of places where you see tiny evolutions in the writing; about a quarter of the way through, very incorrect contractions begin to appear, as if this has been a badly misunderstood grammar lesson.

But equally, the author uses random terms and phrases from his own culture without any form of explanation, which has the likely impact of confusing the reader.
Kuala Lumpur is referred to as ‘KL’… perfectly fine if you know what (or rather, where) ‘KL’ refers to, but baffling if you don’t, as it is never explained, but mentioned eventually at the end of the read.

As I mentioned earlier, the command of English is clear, but the knowledge to write it is lacking. Punctuation is too often incorrect. The text is littered with small, disjointed sentences which should clearly be part of the main body of the previous sentence.
The issues with incorrect tense, words and spellings are continuous throughout, and although you can attribute some of these, again, to the translation from broken, spoken English to the written page, it does have a huge effect on the readability of the book as a whole.

With direct reference to the dialogue, irrespective of the decade, Scottish people simply do not speak in the way depicted by the author, and as a very proud people, nor do they often act in the ways these few characters were portrayed.
This skewed view was incredibly off-putting, and spoiled what should have been strong, resilient characters, just to bring them into line with a doctrine they would not have been wired to understand.

Plot – 3.5/5.0 (Good) – VERY MINOR SPOILERS
I had to work hard to follow the plot and distinguish the central story from the many, varied sub-plots, as these seemed to crash into the main plot and pull the reader’s attention away from it.

As the story follows Puvi along the path of enlightenment and into the wondrous destiny awaiting him, a lot of time seems to be spent building his background. Indeed, the book takes place within a reasonably short timescale, as Puvi comes to understand and accept his destiny. This is not a negative, though I freely admit that I am not of a religious inclination and so did not understand whether the speed of this acceptance was exceptional or not, but there are times where you feel the read is becoming a chore, because some details are over-done due to the large cast of characters, which only ever seems to grow and become ever-more complex.

By the time the story actually moves to the monastery, the story itself seems to have already been eternally long, and where I had hoped the plot would settle, instead it turned to a more theological viewpoint, which in itself became very, very repetitious and (again) was a major distraction.

Sudden shifts in scene, from meetings with people to meetings and discussions with celestial beings and gods, is just one of a number of things which I found very confusing in the early part of the read, but eventually they seemed to have a purpose.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the first few pages of Chapter 27, which felt juvenile and awkward.

Although I realise the story is aimed at those who wish to be led into such doctrines, my personal feeling was that the ‘story’ simply stopped with Puvi’s arrival at the monastery, and although everything following this is clearly there for the purpose of ‘enlightenment’, unfortunately it did not resonate with me at all. My guess would be that there was too much Buddhist-specific terminology I was unfamiliar with.

Where the story itself seems to pick up again, in the last couple of chapters, felt very much an anti-climax to the read.

General – 3.0/5.0 (Okay)
This is most definitely a book aimed at those seeking spiritual answers and enlightenment through the story of Puvi. In that respect, I am certain this is an excellent read, which can be fully appreciated and experienced by those readers.
For me, this was a very interesting story but one which seemed to fall away as a story, and turn into something far more involved on a totally different level.

For all of the reasons above, I struggled massively with this book. It really wasn’t my thing at all and although I read each and every line on each and every page, by the end of the book I didn’t feel that I had read a story at all, as so many things were promised and never materialised.

For those with genuine interest in the content, I am certain this will be a brilliant read.
For me, unfortunately, it was not.

3 Stars… with apologies to a clearly hard-working author.

A delightful "We are all Buddhas" story
By Iris McGowan
Wow, Teck ... Thank you! I just finished the book and I must say that it has put me in a state of Joy. The main character was pure love and it made me so happy to be with him on the pages of the book. I feel that this young boy placed his hands upon my head (as he did to some in the story) and has filled me with light. I want to keep this feeling with me and shall remember to meditate more on unifying the light.

The ebb and flow was fine for me. It fit in with the way the story alternated from the character of an innocent boy in the physical world playing with his friends to the Puvi who slipped easily into a meditative world with spiritual masters gaining more and more wisdom for those who wanted to listen.

Thank you for another way of looking at light and darkness, desire and ignorance, and enlightenment ... Om Mani Padme Hum ... I believe I must read it again ... iris

PS ... I believe the story line builds and builds ... keep reading ...

Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, by David Hume

In the Dialogues, Hume's characters debate a number of arguments for the existence of God, and arguments whose proponents believe through which we may come to know the nature of God. Such topics debated include the argument from design—for which Hume uses a house—and whether there is more suffering or good in the world (argument from evil). Hume started writing the Dialogues in 1750 but did not complete them until 1776, shortly before his death. They are based partly on Cicero's De Natura Deorum. The Dialogues were published posthumously in 1779, originally with neither the author's nor the publisher's name.

About the Author
David Hume was an eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist, and the author of A Treatise of Human Nature, considered by many to be one of the most important philosophical works ever published.

Hume attended the University of Edinburgh at an early age and considered a career in law before deciding that the pursuit of knowledge was his true calling. Hume s writings on rationalism and empiricism, free will, determinism, and the existence of God would be enormously influential on contemporaries such as Adam Smith, as well as the philosophers like Schopenhauer, John Stuart Mill, and Karl Popper, who succeeded him. Hume died in 1776.

Is God Knowable By Reason?
By Kevin Currie-Knight
David Hume made a reputation by writing on reason and its limits. The main thrust of the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is to question whether theological arguments for God that assign Him positive attributes (omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, etc.) go beyond reason's limits in assigning these attributes. We watch Cleanthes (believer in theological arguments), Demea (believer more on faith) and Philo (disbeliever in theology's efficacy) hash out whether reason and experience alone give us reason to say anything whatever about God.

Hume explores all of the major arguments for God's existence. First, the a posteriori argument is explored; the argument that just as seeing a house gives us reason to assume an architect and builder, seeing the world should give us reason to infer a designer. Hume (through the skeptical voice of Philo) sees much wrong with this argument. Why? Because the reason we infer a builder for a house is because experience has shown us that houses have builders, thus when we see a house, we assume that, like other houses we've seen, this one too has a builder. But experience does not tell us that where there is a world, there is a designer. The leap is extra-experiential. Further, even if we DID infer a designer, why infer just one? Houses have construction crews of multiple people; if we analogize between the house and the world, then why not infer that the world, too, might have infinite creators? (And why infer that the world's creator is omnipotent, if all that is needed to create something is to be more powerful than the thing created - no more, no less?)

Next, we go through the a priori argument - the argument from first cause. Hume (Philo) is quick to point out the obvious flaw with this. If everything needs a cause, then what caused God? If God is said to be eternally existing, then why couldn't the natural world - rather than God - be thought eternal instead? And further, why is a infinite chain of causes and effects so unimaginable, anyhow? (Isn't it just as sensical as an eternal God itself not caused?)

Lastly, Philo brings up the argument from evil. In a nutshell, Philo suggests that while theology sees all the perfections of the world, proclaiming them clear evidence of remarkable design, theologians dismiss or downplay the imperfections. If God is said to all-good Himself, then why did he create humans with such flaws? (one assumes that an all-powerful, all-good God could have avoided those errors).

Still, the main thrust of this book is that Philo, far from challenging whether God exists, challenges theologies capacity to assign ANY characteristics to God by reason and experience alone. Hume does a good job not only in outlaying arguments as to why reason is not capable of knowing a thing about God, but also in making believable dialogues (compared to Plato, whose characters are all made to be one-dimensional foils for "Socrates.") As in so many other areas, Hume was a pioneer in the realm of the philosophy of God. This book furnishes strong proof of that!

A Paradigm of Philosophy
By ctdreyer
With the possible exception of his incalculably influential A Treatise of Human Nature, this, I think, is Hume's finest work. The Dialogues is a paradigm of sustained philosophical argumentation on a single subject, and I can't think of a more inspiring work of philosophy. Another reason to read this book is that Hume is one of the few philosophical figures whose work is worth reading as literature. His prose is, of course, lovely and clear as can be; and the Dialogues is packed with the sort of evocative passages that readers of Hume except to find in his work. Furthermore, he's clearly mastered the dialogue format as a way of writing philosophy. He never turns his interlocutors into ciphers spouting the details of their respective positions. Each character has a forceful and distinct personality, and each of them comes to the debate with a well-defined position and adequate means of defending it. In short, I can't recommend this book highly enough.
Most of the Dialogues is devoted to discussion of a posteriori arguments for the existence of God. The main argument considered here is the classical argument from design, which Hume seems to understand as an analogical argument of the following sort: the complexity and order of the universe show that it is similar to artifacts created by human intelligences; similar causes have similar effects; therefore, the universe must have been created by a being with something like a human intelligence; therefore, the universe must have been created by God.
Hume's objections to this argument are legion, and many of the individual objections are both ingenious and forceful. He provides reasons for thinking that the universe isn't all that similar to artifacts created by human beings. He argues, for instance, that at least in some respects, the universe resembles animal or vegetable life more than it resembles artifacts created by human beings. Hume also provides for thinking that, even if we think the universe is similar to a human artifact, we ought to think the universe was created by a being quite unlike God. The relevant empirical evidence, he argues, provides us with no good reason to think that the universe wasn't created by multiple beings (large human artifacts are usually created by multiple beings), or that the being(s) who created it are still alive (human creators die), or that the being(s) who created it were infinite (it's not clear that creating the finite universe would have required infinite power), or that the being(s) who created it were morally perfect (the universe, with all its misery and despair, certainly isn't what one would expect from a perfect being). Furthermore, he proposes certain alternative naturalistic explanations of the existence and nature of the universe; and he claims that it's unclear why an appeal to divine creation is to be preferred to these speculative naturalistic stories of the universe's creation.
As I hope this all-too-brief synopsis suggests, Hume's cumulative case against the argument from design is quite impressive. It is, of course, possible to avoid some of these criticisms in various ways, and his speculative naturalistic explanations leave quite a bit to be desired. But the total case is a philosophical demolition par excellence. Indeed, I'm pretty sure that Hume has shown that the argument from design is more or less worthless as support for anything resembling traditional theism. So, if you're enamored of that argument, I suggest you pick up book and wrestle with the criticisms found here.
Now, this isn't all Hume discusses in the Dialogues. There's a section discussing a priori arguments for the existence of God; it focuses on arguments against a version of the cosmological (i.e. first cause) argument. And Hume's arguments concerning the cosmological argument also rule out any sort of ontological argument, as he claims that no sense can be made of the idea of a necessarily existing being. The book also includes a few some brief discussion of particular issues concerning religion.
Where, in the end, does Hume come down on the issue of theism? It's hard to tell, as it's not clear that any of the particular characters speaks for him. Philo, the character who often appears to be speaking for him, never denies the existence of a deity; he simply denies the ability of human reason to discover anything substantial about what such a being is like. That Hume agrees with this is, I think, the most we can glean from this text about Hume's own religious views. It seems clear that he has no sympathy for organized religion, or for any religious views that purport to describe the nature of God, His intentions, or how and why He created the universe as He did. And the only positive religious claim that is given respectful treatment here is the bare claim that we have reason to think that the cause of the universe as a whole is somewhat similar to a human intelligence.
But does acceptance of this minimal thesis amount to his being a theist? Again, it's very hard to tell. First, of course, one might wonder whether this fairly vague positive view is enough to amount to some form of theism. But let's put that issue to one side. Even if it is enough to support some form of theism, it's often difficult to tell whether Hume means to be advocating such a position here. The problem is that it often seems Hume's explicit advocation of this position amounts to little more than a description of what he thinks is an inevitable human tendency to think this way. Given how our minds actually work, he seems to think, we're bound to think something like this about the origin of the universe. Yet it's somewhat unclear that he thinks forming beliefs in this way is reliable. It may simply be that we have a brute instinct to think in a way that insures we'll see the world as resulting from some human-like intelligence, and it's at least not clear that that isn't a debunking account of the plausibility of theism. (For more support that this is a debunking explanation, see his The Natural History of Religion, where the explanations of various religious beliefs certainly seem to be one's that suggest those beliefs simply aren't plausible.)

Hume's Posthumous Classic
By R. Albin
This short and artfully written book was published after Hume's death. Hume did not wish to experience the controversy engendered by the arguments advanced in the book. It is likely as well that Hume was concerned also with offending some of the moderate Presbyterian clergy who were his personal friends and had been his partisans in other controversies. This book is primarily an attack on the idea that the exercise of reason and logic provides support for religion, and particularly that application of reason leads to strong evidence for the existence of a beneficient God. This line of thought had become particularly popular among liberal theologians in the first half of the 18th century and was a widely held notion among Enlightenment intellectuals across Europe and North America. This idea is still widely held today and can be seen in the writings of the so-called 'intelligent design' advocates of creationism. Hume's criticisms, then, are not only of historic interest but continue to have relevance to our contemporary lives.
The Dialogues are constructed as a 3 cornered argument between three friends. Demea, a man upholding revealed religion against the idea that reason provides support for the existence of God. Cleanthes, an advocate of natural religion. Philo, a skeptical reasoner who attacks the positions held by Demea and Cleanthes. For those who like Hume's sprightly 18th century style, this is a fun book to read. Hume artfully divides some of his strongest arguments between Cleanthes and Philo, and gives the Dialogues the real sense of a dispute among 3 intelligent friends. Philo is generally taken to represent Hume's positions but Cleanthes articulates some strong arguments and provides some of the best criticisms of Demea's fideism. Much of the book is devoted to attacking the argument from design, which Cleanthes attempts to defend against assaults from Philo and Demea. In many ways, the argument from design is the major idea of those supporting the natural religion approach to existence of God. Hume's critique is thorough and powerful. It even includes an anticipation of Darwin's idea's of selection, though the basis for Hume's critique is primarily epistemological. In the later parts of the book, Hume attacks also the comsological argument for the existence of God, though this discussion is relatively brief and a bit confusing. Hume's analysis is consistent broadly with much of his philosophical work. In many ways, his great theme was the limitations of reason, and this book is an example of his preoccupation with the relatively limited role of reason in establishing certain facts about the universe. He finishes with short criticisms of the idea that religion is needed for a stable and well ordered society and defends the usefullness of skeptical reasoning.
It is important to view the Dialogues as part of a critique of religion that Hume sustained in several works. His Natural History of Religion, the On Miracles section of the Enquiry Concerning Human Understacing, and other essays comprise a broad criticism of religion. Other pillars of religion, such as the existence of miracles and revelation, are criticized in his other work. While Hume denied being an atheist and was apparently disturbed by the dogmatic atheism of French philosophes he met in Paris, he was certainly not religous in any conventional sense.
This is a short and very readable book but the power of its arguments are totally out of proportion to its length.

Vague, but an interesting response to Socialism
By Alexander
John Bates Clark appears to have written this brief essay as an attempt to appease socialists so as to prevent violent revolution. He sympathizes with their concerns: that society ought to be beneficial for all, and not just the most powerful. His view is that society can do this by maintaining competition in the economic system and introducing government whenever certain injustices (such as monopolies, substandard working conditions, and environmental damage) are committed. Competition, however, is one of the most critical components of the economic system, and it does the most to help all people, including the poor. Socialism is misguided, in his view, because it would lower the wages of the rich as well as the wages of the poor.

I think the essay is fairly decent because it's a good outline of neoclassical economics, Clark's proposals have been adopted in many countries, and because it's an interesting perspective and response to Socialism. However, many of Clark's proposals were vague, and the Kindle version had poor formatting (there weren't even indents for new paragraphs). So, I rank this three stars.

Mixed but favorable
By David Lawrence
The physical book is a successful photo-reproduction of the original text. While I like the author's writing style, his analysis is not quite as explicit,
detailed, and clear as I was hoping for, though there are some valuable insights. -And, that response is on the basis of one reading. I'm keeping the book for rereading later, because I do admire Clark's acute observation, and because I may (of course) have missed things first time through.

Who Is RAND PAUL? A Short Biography of the Life and Times of Rand Paul
Rand Paul's Libertarian father had a strong following when he ran for President. Will the son surpass his father in the coming Republican primaries? Will he rise to the top and actually become the Republican nominee for President? Will he, in fact, defeat Hillary Clinton and become our President?

In his political views, Rand Paul's father, former Congressman Ron Paul, was a little eccentric, but their home life was strictly Brady-bunch normal. The children had a healthy balance of freedom and responsibility. Punishment for misdeeds consisted of writing assignments. From his childhood, Rand was exposed to the political activities and libertarian philosophy of his father. He was involved in Ron Paul's earliest campaigns and traveled with him to the Republican National Convention when his dad headed up the Texas delegation that nominated Ronald Reagan for President.

In Who Is RAND PAUL? A Short Biography of the Life and Times of Rand Paul you will learn:

  • His early education and reading of conservative Austrian economists like Ayn Rand, Friedrich Hayek, and others
  • His attendance at Baylor University and departure without a degree
  • Graduation from Duke University School of Medicine in 1988 and completion of his residency in ophthalmology
  • His successful practice of ophthalmology and benevolent use of his skills to benefit the poor
  • His creation of the National Board of Ophthalmology
  • His support of his father's Congressional campaigns and adoption of libertarian principles
  • His participation in Tea Party related groups
  • His election to the United States Senate in 2010, including his overwhelming win in the Republican primary
  • His non-interventionist foreign policy and commitment to "constitutional conservativism" including limitations on the Patriot Act and support of the Second Amendment right to own and bear arms
  • His success at winning several conservative straw polls, leading to his candidacy for President
  • The Kentucky limitation on running for both the US Senate and the Presidency at the same time.
Rand Paul is clearly a passionate and committed conservative voice within the Republican party. However, his policies regarding US military intervention around the world is at odds with many of those in the Republican establishment. He has reached out to minority groups that normally eschew voting for Republicans. His concern for improving the economic opportunities of the lower and middle class distinguishes him from the more moderate elements of both parties. He has a decisive nature and is highly motivated to see major, systemic changes in how our government conducts its business. Others may say that change is needed, but Rand Paul is quick to point out the exact changes it needs. Does Rand Paul have your vote? Are you willing to look a little closer at his life and political record before making up your mind? ACT NOW! Scroll to the top of this page and click that BUY button! Then, you can immediately begin reading Who Is RAND PAUL? A Short Biography of the Life and Times of Rand Paul on your Kindle device, computer, tablet or smartphone.

A young candidate in the race for power
By Beran Parry
There is undoubtedly a great deal of bias in the media when it comes to discussing the merits of the 2016 Presidential candidates. That's where these extremely helpful biographies can inform the debate and help voters to look behind the scenes and get a clearer picture of what makes each presidential hopeful tick. In the confusing and often contradictory stories that fill the press, Tag Powell shines a light of clarity on the candidates to reveal their past, their political views, their successes and their failures. The result is a more complete and accurate description of the people who seek the highest office in the world. Knowledge is power and every voter should avail themselves of these insights and analyses before they cast their ballot. Essential reading in the run-up to the election.

By NWIAReader
I only got through a small portion of the book. It's poorly written and so awkward to read that I was going back and re-reading every few paragraphs. I also downloaded the Carly Fiorina book and I don't even plan to try it. Disappointing.

Informative but not written well at all, hard to keep my interest, good background on the candidate though. Wouldn't recommend.
