Textbook example of what is wrong with textbook publishers.

I just received the book yesterday in a less than new condition from amazon. Cover was bent, but otherwise the code and the pages were brand new. Anyways, the main reason to purchase this book was to get "ebook" content. The description from countless other vendors and JBL states that that is a feature of the book and it's even printed on the back of the cover. You login and access the digital content, and all is test questions, a study guide, and additional information on the case studies.

The 'ebook' content is actually non-existent. They just copy and pasted the buzzword and applied it to their book. Perhaps in the earlier edition, when they were trying to push for digital content, they offered some sort of electronic version that came with it. In order for you to have both a hard copy and digital you need to purchase a digital key which costs the same MSRP. Yes, purchasing their textbook on their site actually costs more than a physical copy from a retailer. They label their digital version as an "efolio" edition to skirt providing you with the digital content and be able to print the word on their textbook.

It wasn't that the content was mislabeled, I can totally accept that. It was the fact that their IS NO ebook content. Nothing on their supplemental site is even remotely close to textbook content. It is blatantly misrepresenting what they offer in their textbook, probably because they have so few people utilizing the supplemental material.

This textbook is an essential tool for any firefighter.

I ordered this book as a textbook for my Hybrid Firefighter I and II Certification courses. Since it is authored by the regulating agencies of the fire service (IAFC and NFPA) it becomes and essential read to know what NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) guidelines require. This was a required text but well worth the investment.

the publisher really needs to differentiate this book and the Navigate 2 book a lot better. I bought this one and ended up sending it back because I needed the other one. Come on Jones and Bartlett!

That he has adhered strictly to the truth the editor, at least, who has had an opportunity of detecting any contradiction or discrepancy in his statements, is well satisfied. He has invariably repeated the same story without deviating in the slightest particular, and has also carefully perused the manuscript, dictating an alteration wherever the most trivial inaccuracy has appealed. It was Solomon's fortune, during his captivity, to be owned by several masters. The treatment he received while at the "Pine Woods" shows that among slaveholders there are men of humanity as well of cruelty. Some of them are spoken of with emotions of gratitude—others in a spirit of bitterness. It is believed that the following account of his experience on Bayou Boeuf presents a correct picture of Slavery in all its lights, and shadows, as it now exists in that locality. Unbiased, as he conceives, by any prepossessions or prejudices, the only object of the editor has been to give a faithful history of Solomon Northup's life, as he received it from his lips. In the accomplishment of that object, he trusts he has succeeded, notwithstanding the numerous faults of style and of expression it may be found to contain.

This story of the abduction of a free Negro adult from the North and his enslavement in the South--provides a sensational element which cannot be matched in any of the dozens of narratives written by former slaves. 'Think of it: For thirty years a man, wit all man's hopes, fears and aspirations--with a wife and children to call him by the endearing names of husband and father--with a home, humble it may be, but still a home...then for twelve years a thing, a chattel personal, classed with mules and horses....Oh! it is horrible. It chills the blood to think that such are.'

About the Author
SOLOMON NORTHUP was born in 1808 and lived as a free man in Saratoga Springs, New York, with his wife and three children until his capture and enslavement in 1841. He was one of very few who were able to regain their freedom after being kidnapped and sold into slavery. After he returned to New York, he published his memoir and became an active abolitionist, lecturing throughout the Northeast about his experiences.

Growing up in the North,I had always found it hard to imagine that slavery not only existed in this country,but flourished.Through the years,I have read many an autobiography or history book concerning slavery and thought I knew it all. And yet I was blind.
Until I read Solomon Northrup's "12 Years a Slave." Where has this book been? It is a masterpiece of history,of one man,one free man's life. A true picture of 'The Old South'.
Mr. Northrup was a free black man with a beautiful wife and two daughters living in Saratoga,NY. He was lured from his home by slave traders who specialized in the awful practice of kidnapping free black citizens and selling them into slavery. Torn from his home and family,Mr.Northrup endured the worst that can happen to a human being,and still live.
And yet,he remained fair and honest,never stooping to the level some of his white masters did.
I am not going to rewrite the book in this review because I recommend reading it for yourself. Slavery was and is a vile institution.
Solomon Northrup is my new inspiration.
This book will shock you. But you will be the better for having read it.

Extraordinary book, but there are better versions on Kindle

As slave stories go, this one is, in my view, without peer. Northup's s captivating tale -- which has gained attention because of the movie that shares the book's title -- is told in exacting detail with an easy prose. He sets the stage masterfully, describing people and places before proceeding into the narrative. Unlike works of fiction, this book is so compelling because, by all accounts, it is true. There is no polemical axe to grind, as with Uncle Tom (a novel at one point wryly referenced by Northup). Here you see both the brutality of slavery and the moments of kindness by slaves and even some slave owners. Solomon tells the story with clarity and intelligence.

The free versions on other sites I found were pretty poorly formatted, so spending a dollar for a polished version on Amazon is worthwhile, but this one is not the best of them. Granted, the book is formatted adequately, and any typographical errors in this version seem to be simple reproductions of the original.

However, the supporting material is a letdown. I read the version that includes the introduction by novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez. That introduction is borderline insulting, as it makes only a weak attempt to separate accounts with fictional elements like Roots from an authentic account like this one. Worse still, Perkins-Valdez can't resist indulging in repeatedly referencing her own recently released slave novel, even going so far as to quote herself. There are almost no historical elements to this version beyond the main book -- no mention of Northup after the book, no mention of he writer who helped him pen the book, nothing. There is more information on the writer of the introduction than there is the author. One other oddity worth mentioning: the original book's preface -- the one done by the man who helped Northup write the book -- has been curiously excised from this version too. That makes this version something less than complete.

For those looking for a better version, you might consider Twelve Years a Slave - Enhanced Edition by Dr. Sue Eakin Based on a Lifetime Project. New Info, Images, Maps, which contains a robust amount of supporting material and, better still, is right now the same cost as this version.

Awesome indeed, Please Read This Book!

I read this entire book in one day. I could not put it down. I came across it while trying to learn more about my town. I was in awe after realizing that all this occured some 15 miles from where I now live. I believe this book would make an excellent movie. The way this free black man was taken and sold into salvery is so sad and if I had not been looking into old new paper articles around the area I would have not believed this story. SO many people want to forget about the history of black people but they shouldn't. I don't think anyone can walk away after reading this book and not feel some sort of compassion for the all the souls lost to slavery.

Disappointed

The title of this book is very misleading. As a veteran teacher of 11 years, I am constantly looking for professional text to help improve my practice and this book falls short. The book primarily offers surface level activities and projects that might represent best practices from decades past. My hope was that I would find bona fide strategies and techniques on how to support higher level thinking and content specific literacy strategies. The information included in this text could easily be found online for free...since most teachers like myself pay for books like this one out of our own pockets, my best advice is to save your money and skip this text.

Thought-provoking, Interesting and Challenging!

These short essays pack an unexpected yet refreshing punch. Mr. Vollmer gets to the point, doesn't mince words and even uses a bit of humor at times to illustrate his ideas. Obviously he is a deep thinker and he writes well. He fearlessly takes on current issues and past history. Read what he says about guns, the great failure of "trickle down" economics, how to strengthen the middle class and abortion. Then he illustrates how innovations such as ways to engage the American voter or to motivate American students could actually work. I'm thinking he's on to something. In looking back at our history, he clarifies what happened with the 1980's savings & loan debacle and how it relates to the housing "bubble." He draws on his considerably rich, introspective and reasonable understanding of Viet Nam and the Iraq War to clarify for me some troubling issues. Thank you for taking the time to share with us.

Beyond the mining of North Vietnamese ports and selective bombing in and around Hanoi, the initial DUCK HOOK concept included proposals for "tactical" nuclear strikes against logistics targets and U.S. and South Vietnamese ground incursions into the North. In early October 1969, however, Nixon aborted planning for the long-contemplated operation. He had been influenced by Hanoi's defiance in the face of his dire threats and concerned about U.S. public reaction, antiwar protests, and internal administration dissent.

In place of DUCK HOOK, Nixon and Kissinger launched a secret global nuclear alert in hopes that it would lend credibility to their prior warnings and perhaps even persuade Moscow to put pressure on Hanoi. It was to be a "special reminder" of how far President Nixon might go. The risky gambit failed to move the Soviets, but it marked a turning point in the administration's strategy for exiting Vietnam. Nixon and Kissinger became increasingly resigned to a "long-route" policy of providing Saigon with a "decent chance" of survival for a "decent interval" after a negotiated settlement and U.S. forces left Indochina.

Burr and Kimball draw upon extensive research in participant interviews and declassified documents to unravel this intricate story of the October 1969 nuclear alert. They place it in the context of nuclear threat making and coercive diplomacy since 1945, the culture of the Bomb, intra-governmental dissent, domestic political pressures, the international "nuclear taboo," and Vietnamese and Soviet actions and policies. Must Read for Nixon, Kissinger, and Vietnam!

How does one end a war quickly when negotiations are stalemated? Nixon, remembering how the Eisenhower-Dulles threat to use nuclear weapons against the People’s Republic of China (PRC) had led to securing an armistice in the Korean War, decided to use the “madman” theory. In essence, the unpredictable nature of Nixon would be conveyed to North Vietnamese and the Soviets accompanied by military threats. To force Hanoi to be responsive to Washington’s demands for a treaty, Nixon-Kissinger issued an ultimatum: if progress had not been made by 1 November (the one-year anniversary of LBJ’s bombing halt), then a major military option would be launched.

Was the threat a bluff? For a while, Nixon and Kissinger considered the mining of Haiphong harbor to prevent merchant ships from docking as well as lighter craft from off-loading such vessels. Coupled with this was talk of renewed bombing of North Vietnam, especially roads and bridges as well as the rail lines connecting North Vietnam and the PRC. However, the 15 October 1969 Moratorium protest against the war led the president to cancel a military option. Instead, he and Kissinger decided on a nuclear alert, but one that did not involve a change in DEFCON status.

In the end, the authors conclude, that threat diplomacy did not alter Hanoi’s bargaining position in Paris. However, the military escalation card was not totally abandoned as seen in the invasion of Cambodia in 1970, the incursion into Laos in 1971, and the LINEBACKER bombing campaigns of 1972. The nuclear threat was also used regarding the PLO challenge to Jordan in the fall of 1970 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973 when the Soviets threatened to send conventional forces to the Sinai Peninsula to unilaterally enforce the cease-fire.

With failure of the threat diplomacy, the Nixon-Kissinger policy regarding Vietnam shifted to a “long-road” strategy. American troop withdrawals would continue to take place, while Vietnamization would hopefully create a South Vietnamese military that could defend itself once all American forces were withdrawn. The endgame for Nixon and Kissinger was a decent interval from American withdrawal to the collapse of South Vietnam under attack from the North so that “it would mask the role their policies had played in South Vietnam’s collapse.” (74) A decent interval was preferably five years, but could be as short as two.

This thoroughly researched volume provides a very detailed overview of how Nixon and Kissinger tried to end the Vietnam War during their first nine months in office. What is revealing is the secrecy that both men employed in trying to achieve this goal. The State Department was kept out of the loop and Defense Secretary Melvin Laird was bypassed at every opportunity. The bombing of Cambodia and Laos as well as intensified raids in South Vietnam were done in secret. Even many of the base commanders in the JCS nuclear alert of October 1969 were kept in the dark as to the true motive of the exercise. The authors also paint Kissinger as the hawk and Nixon as a vacillator, going between wanting military action because of the hawks at home and advocating inaction because of the rising anti-war movement at home.

The only drawback to this work is the still classified nature of some of the sources. A number of CIA documents, according to the authors, were heavily redacted. Even more crucial to a complete understanding of the period is the unavailability of Kissinger’s papers, which are closed to all but a few select individuals until five years after his death. The authors write that Kissinger’s “restrictions, possibly the last outstanding abuse of power of the Nixon era, is most likely in violation of federal records laws.” (x) Evidently neither they nor anyone else has challenged the restrictions set in place by the former secretary of state.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the Vietnam War, especially the policies followed by Nixon and Kissinger during their first year in office.

William Burt and Jeffrey Kimball have written a magnificent book. Carefully argued and impressively researched, it brings to light the secret nuclear alert of October 1969. It was part of Nixon’s and Kissinger’s “madman” strategy for scaring Hanoi (and Moscow) into ending the Vietnam war on terms acceptable to the United States. Historians and political scientists will welcome Burt and Kimball's convincing revisionist study.

The Madman Nuclear Alert

This book is well-researched and authoritative. It documents President Nixon's focus on ending the Vietnam War by sending "signals" and veiled threats of nuclear attacks to try to scare the Russians and get the Russians to pressure North Vietnam to pull back and stop the war. At the same time that he was trying to scare the Russians, he did not want to upset the US public and the anti-war protesters. "Tricky Dick" (not the authors' term) tied to keep his actions in Cambodia and Laos secret from the US public but still scare the Russians and North Vietnamese. He then tried to convince the Russians that he was so "Mad" that he would use nuclear weapons in Vietnam, while keeping the nuclear threat secret from the US public. The result has been called the "Madman Nuclear Alert". The existence of this alert (he called it the JCS Readiness Exercise) was a secret, and its goals were so secret that the US Secretary of State was not told what we were doing, and military commanders did not know how to achieve the goals because they did not know what the goals were! The result was confusion and it is not clear that the Russians understood what it was about, either. A well-documented record of a bungled and dangerous policy. Not easy reading -- but a jewel for true historians.

Excelente recopilación y análisis de los hechos del 11A

11A of 2002 was an important chapter of the contemporary history of Venezuela. Citizens protested peacefully with the conviction of doing the right thing to preserve the democracy in Vzla. Unfortunately, mistakes were made to underestimate the deceitful character of Chavez, sillwhonresigned 3 times because he accepted he activated the Plan Avila to murder innocent Venezuelans who were walking to Miraflores with flags, whistles and signs to demand his resignation. 2016 and the situation in the country is worse than even. I loved the inside information of what was happening during those days, conversations with the principal leaders from the military, PDVSA workers, politicians, business representatives and union leaders.
I feel it could have been edited better. Sometimes the reading is easy, fluid, but in other parts is hard to follow and to be engaged.
Still I highly recommend this book, specially the last 200 pages of the book.

On the morning of 7 March 1997, the bodies of two elderly female patients were discovered in their sheltere accommodation at Grangegorman Psychiatric Hospital in Dublin.

It would be a further 16 years before Mark Nash was convicted of the notorious Grangegorman murders, but not before Dean Lyons, an innocent man, spent months in prison for a crime he did not commit, only to tragically die of a heroin overdose before his name was cleared.

Here Alan Bailey, a retired member of the Garda Síochána who worked on the original case and who always insisted Lyons was innocent, recalls the investigation of the most brutal murders in Irish criminal history, and how pressure on the Garda Síochána to solve the crime led to one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in the history of the Irish state.
