About the Author
Four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, bureau chief of both Newsweek and the Washington Times, and investigative team leader for ABC's 20/20, Hugh Aynesworth was a thirty-two-year-old reporter for the Dallas Morning News when JFK's visit to Dallas ended in tragedy. His coverage of the assassination, the trial of Jack Ruby, and the conspiracy flurry that followed earned him two Pulitzer nominations and recognition as one of the most respected authorities on the Kennedy assassination. His reporting of Martin Luther King's assassination, the 1993 Branch Davidian standoff and fire, and the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City marked his career advancement from a small-town sports editor to bureau chief. Aynesworth is the author or coauthor of seven books, including The Only Living Witness and Conversations with a Killer about serial murderer Ted Bundy. He has served as president of the Dallas Press Club and the Press Club Foundation and has won over seventy local, regional, and national awards. Hugh Aynesworth lives in Dallas with his wife Paula, a sales executive at KERA and KXT North Texas Public Media.

Biased account, author probably informed CIA and other government entities

The case for Aynesworth's writings on the JFK assassination being biased towards the Warren Report is stronger when you look at records released by the JFK Act.
Many suspect the author has been an informant for the CIA, Dallas Police, and other government entities. One of the more shocking documents is a CIA report written on October 10, 1963, by then-Dallas CIA head J. Walton Moore. He writes about Aynesworth's possible trip to Cuba when he was a reporter with The Dallas Morning News, and how Aynesworth "has offered his services to us if it develops that he receives a visa" to Cuba.
Moore wrote that Aynesworth "told me that he had applied for a visa for Cuba approximately a year ago," and that Aynesworth had received a call from someone with the Czech embassy saying it was under consideration. Moore added that he was "submitting a name check request for Aynesworth
If you read Carl Bernstein's account of journalists working for the CIA published in Rolling Stone in 1977, the early 1960s was a hotbed of collusion between journalists and the CIA. Aynesworth was among those and apparently continues to advocate the government's party line.

An important retrospective

Given all the recent nostalgia connected with the JFK assassination, it's good to know that those who were a part of that day and weekend are still around not only to talk about it...but to write about it. Hugh Aynesworth is one and he had a terrific vantage point for which he has penned his remembrances.
Make no mistake...while "November 22, 1963: Witness to History" concerns just that, Aynesworth's account has far less to do with President Kennedy than it does with Lee Harvey Oswald, Oswald's family and Jack Ruby. If the reader is looking for more on JFK, this isn't the book to buy. That aside, the author tells a side of the weekend that many people know less about. He tracks Oswald almost from the time that shots were fired and gives a good account of the hours and days that followed for the assassin. His descriptions of Oswald's mother, Marguerite, are hysterical. Aynesworth makes no bones about the fact that he didn't like Jack Ruby, a character with whom he was acquainted. But he's fair to the reporting of Ruby, as the good reporter he is.
Occasionally the book meanders. There is no clear path to the narrative, which for me was the only drawback. But Hugh Aynesworth's witness to history is indeed compelling and I highly recommend it.

Best overall account

I've read a bunch of books covering this topic and I have watched all of the History channel documentaries. This is one of the best given the methodical research and analysis. Highly recommended
