Rabbi Meir Kahane: His Life and Thought Volume Two: 1976-1983, by Libby Kahane

This is a gripping biography of Rabbi Kahane written by his wife Libby Kahane. Contrary to expectations this is not a hagiography, but rather an objective exposition of his activities. Her research combines with her first-hand knowledge of events to present a comprehensive survey of Rabbi Kahane’s ideology and political strategy, beginning with the childhood experiences that shaped him The religious nature of Jewish life was his passion, and it informed everything he did. He realized that assimilation was a very real danger, and worked in many capacities to promote Jewish observance, as teacher, community leader, Rabbi, and writer, with a column in the Jewish Press that ran for 30 years. It was his response to the wave of violence that swept America in the late 1960s that led him to found the Jewish Defense League. Soviet Jewry soon became the JDL’s primary concern and the group’s violent demonstrations resulted in publicity that brought world awareness to the plight of Soviet Jews and led to their freedom. The book traces Rabbi Kahane’s involvement in Israeli politics, his efforts – still relevant – to preserve the country’s Jewish character and to oppose appeasement, and quotes from his writings to to give the reasoning behind his various actvities. This combination of memoir and biography works well. The narrative is structured around a combination of interviews and careful archival research painstakingly footnoted, that lets readers draw their own conclusions.

make you feel like you are down on the playing field with him
By Ken Fishman
The popular expression says, “Rabbi Kahane was right.” Reading the new and profoundly documented book, “Rabbi Meir Kahane – His Life
and Thought – Volume Two,” written by the Rabbi’s wife, Libby Kahane, you realize, again and again, that Rabbi Kahane is still as “right on” as
ever. This fascinating biography depicts his total dedication to battle against assimilation in America, his constant call for Aliyah, the struggle
to free Soviet Jewry, the campaign to increase settlement throughout Israel and to make the Jewish State more Jewish, and inspiring Jews to
“come out of the closet” and feel proud to be Jews. As recorded in this insider’s, diary-like account of his days, his life was an indefatigable
odyssey of lectures, radio shows, demonstrations, TV interviews, meetings, debates, campaigns, prolific essay and book writing, Torah classes, Talmudic study, court cases and prison sentences for the crime of being overly committed to the Jewish People, and for his super-
human devotion to the causes he championed, which invariably set him at odds with Jews who were terrified of “rocking the boat” by being and
acting “too Jewish.”
This detailed and carefully researched journal of Rabbi Kahane’s life has all the action and suspense of a political thriller. Rebbetzin Kahane, who
worked for many years at the National Library in Jerusalem, lets the day-to-day events in her husband’s life tell the story, adding her own
professionalism as a researcher to highlight the monumental amount of activity and achievement which characterized her husband’s literally
sleepless endeavors. In this respect, the biography is amazingly objective. While the writer clearly supports her husband’s activities and
beliefs, she never moralizes about his deeds, or deifies his character, but rather let’s his actions and words do the talking themselves. And
here is where Rabbi Meir Kahane is unique – in his total self-sacrifice, willing, again and again, to challenge the norm, to stridently oppose the
Jewish establishment, and mighty governments, to serve time in jail, if need be, and make himself scorned by people he called “comfortable
Jews,” rather than relinquish one tiny truth of the word of G-d, as he saw it written so clearly, black letters on white, in the Torah and words
of the Prophets.
When Israel’s Supreme Court decreed that the Israeli police had the right to prevent Jews from praying on the Temple Mount because it
created a threat to public order, Rabbi Kahane wrote: “This means (in the eyes of the Supreme Court of Israel) that the
presence of a Jew which leads to Arab anger and violence must be stopped, not by putting down the Arab violence, but by taking away
Jewish rights.”
More powerful than his words were his actions. For a reviewer who also makes movies, as I read about the action and suspense which surrounded Rabbi Kahane’s life, I couldn’t help but picture the story as a suspenseful thriller that tells the saga of his generation, encompassing some of the most dramatic moments in modern Jewish history. The detailed accounts of the valorous, and sometimes quixotic adventures of the Rabbi as he sets off to battle the Establishment, make you feel like you are down on the playing field with him, charging forward at the towering windmills whatever the personal cost. You feel his exhaustion as he waits for the next plane flight on a coast-to-coast speaking tour in America, and his pain at being away from his beloved family during his seven month incarceration in Ramle prison in Israel. Among the highlights of the decade which the biography covers are his strident activism on behalf of Soviet Jewry; his campaign for Jewish settlement in Hevron and Shechem; his vehement opposition to President Carter and to the Neo-Nazis in Skokie. Episodes which kept me riveted were the creation of the Kach movement and the campaign for the Knesset; the struggle to save Yamit; the battle for Jewish rights on the Temple Mount; military reserve duty in Ramallah; and his always creative war with the political and ideological Left. These are only a few of the news-making stories which fill the 500 page book, which is also replete with Rabbi Kahane’s great wit, uncompromised beliefs, and clips from the eloquent essays which he wrote. And it is a rare glimpse of his private life as well, as a dedicated husband and loving father, always concerned for the education and welfare of his children, even in the midst of his most tumultuous times.
The inspiring biography is a remarkable account of an unarguably remarkable Jew.

volume two... stunning account of the life of the greatest jew of the last 50 years bar none... rabbi meir kahane Hy"d...
By Amazon Customer
I was spell bound for two weeks reading this book by rebetzin kahane... Literally could not put it down for more than a couple of hours at a time... I was riveted by the sheer magnitude of the non-stop work production and sweeping scope of the Jewish issues rav meir covered in just 58 years of life... Actually in just the last 23 years he was with us... Rav meir was a G-d inspired force of nature in that too short span of time... From the miraculous and momentous outcome of the 1967 6-day Israeli/arab war rav meir was literally on fire and felt the potential imminent advent of the messianic final redemption and from then on he dedicated virtually his every waking moment in a labor of love for his people and homeland to become worthy of this great and millennia yearned-for salvation for the Jewish people and indeed for the rest of mankind as well... It is such an agonizing shame that rav meir's vision was not realized during his lifetime but there is no shred of doubt that his vision for Israel and the world will be realized and come to fruition one day... Hopefully in the very near future... I bless and pray for mrs kahane's continued good health and years more of life until 120 to complete her magnum opus and true labor of love... I wait with bated breath for volume three... Rabbi Moshe Parry...
