About the Author
Raif Badawi is a Saudi Arabian writer and activist and the creator of the website Free Saudi Liberals. He was arrested in 2012 on a charge of insulting Islam through electronic channels and brought to court on several charges including apostasy. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes in 2013, then resentenced to 1,000 lashes and ten years in prison plus a fine in 2014. The lashes were to be carried out over 20 weeks. He has been imprisoned since 2012 and was publicly punished for expressing his opinions with 50 lashes on the 9th January 2015 on the square in front of the Al-Dschafali mosque in Jeddah.
Constantin Schreiber is a lawyer and a journalist. He speaks fluent Arabic and was a correspondent for Deutsche Welle in Dubai between 2006 and early 2009. Subsequently he worked for the German Foreign Office in Berlin, responsible for media projects in the Arab world.
Ahmed Danny Ramadan is an experienced journalist with bylines appearing in The Washington Post, the Guardian and Foreign Policy for his reporting in the Middle East. He is also a translator and author, with two collections of short stories published in Arabic. He is planning to publish his first novel in English soon.
Lawrence M. Krauss is an American theoretical physicist and cosmologist and a bestselling author of many books, including The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing. He is a vocal advocate of the importance of science and reason as opposed to religion and superstition.

Astonishing

Having followed Raif's story for some time, I had been eagerly waiting the English translation of some of his essays, but I wasn't sure if they would be all that relevant to me personally. I could not have been more wrong. His introduction, written from prison, grabbed me by the heart-
"I spent three years writing these articles for you: I was tortured; my wife and our three children had to emigrate from our country because of the many pressures placed upon them. My family and I endured all those harsh struggles simply because I spoke my mind. We went through those hardships for the sake of every letter written in this book."
and never let me go-
"Any religion based state has a mission to limit the minds of its people, to fight the developments of history and logic, and to dumb down its citizens. It's important to stand in the way of such a mentality, to deny it from continuing its mission to murder the souls of its people, killing them deep within while they are still alive and breathing."
His criticism of the religious authority that grips his homeland is scathing and unrelenting, but suffused with wit and intelligence.
Raif and his family are paying the price for the freedom of speech that we hold so dear, and yet so often seem to take for granted. It would be a shame if we who don't risk prison, beating and death for speaking our minds were to ignore him.

True Justice requires a full pardon by King Salman of Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia NEEDS this man to be free, to be a leader in the human rights field to guide the country and the people to true freedom of speech. We are no longer in the time of darkness, and Saudi Arabia needs to move forward, rather than backward. Raif Badawi is not the only innocent man languishing in prison -- there are many others who have dared to voice their opinions -- even Badawi's ATTORNEY has been arrested, tried, and given a lengthy prison sentence.
As far as this book, 1000 Lashes: Because I Say What I think -- please don't miss it. It's a small tome, but heavy in value, for we all need to think about the messages in this book. In fact, I have read his book twice since I received it last week. I am now going to order other copies to give to my friends. Please buy it and support a man who is worthy of support. I assure you that there is nothing he has written that brings harm to his government, to his country, or to his people. While he does write about the religious authorities in the kingdom, the committee's made of up ultra-conservative men who thrive on harassing other Saudis, this is a subject that SHOULD be raised and changes SHOULD come in this arena.
SIDE NOTE: I know plenty about the harassment at the hands of these men, as I lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for 12 years, and saw angry-faced men with sticks (and sometimes cans of red spray paint) on the prowl in the souks or in the commercial areas, all looking for a woman to harass. When I was there (1978-1990) I thought for sure that things would change and those men would one day lose their authority to stalk women. But even today, many years later, horror stories abound of women they have abused, whether women who dared to speak to a man not of their family, or simply go shopping without the proper attire according to these men, who make up the rules as they go along. I once had one of these men try to accost me in the super market near to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh (I worked at the hospital for 4 years). He was ridiculous and was picking on me because he hated foreign women -- I was wearing the abaya (black cloak) and had on a black scarf covering my hair, but he swore he saw some blonde hair and for that he thought he was going to take me to the police station. Of course, I refused to go one step with him. It's a long story that I won't reveal here, but just know that he ended being punished only because my boss (Dr. Nizar Feteih was quite close to King Khalid) was furious that women working at the hospital were being harassed by such men.
I support any Saudi to calls for an end to the harassment and abuse of women. I support any Saudi who calls for freedom of speech.
This does not mean that I want the Al-Saud kicked off the throne -- no, they will be better that what would come behind them -- think of Iraq and Syria and even Libya and what all is going on in those nations now -- Hard to believe that something like ISIS exists, making Saddam look rather nice in comparison!
So, no one is calling for the Al-Saud to be gone -- just to understand that change is coming, and work with the reasonable people, like Raif Badawi, to bring calm and peaceful change. When change is needed, change WILL come, and a wise leadership will choose to work WITH the people of their nations, rather than AGAINST the people.
I feel strongly that this is a very important book that should be read by every thinking person who cares about the state of the world, and the many people who are being unjustly prosecuted for asking for something as simple, and reasonable, as FREE SPEECH.
My heart and mind is with Raif Badawi, and I long for him to be freed to join his lovely wife and three beautiful children in Canada. A full pardon should be granted to him, his attorney, and to all the people in prison for simply saying what they think.

A Book That Needs to Be Read

Raif's writings are powerful, yet poetic, and they need to be read. The entries included in this book were mostly written in 2012, yet they give an uncanny account of events yet to come. If you're looking for a deeper understanding of what it feels like to try to live free in a repressed country, "1000 Lashes" takes you there. This is a must-read for anyone who blogs, anyone who desires a deeper understanding of Saudi Arabian culture, and anyone who sympathizes with the unbearable plight of this young writer, father, husband, hero.
