About the Author
Born in Virginia in 1820, lecturer and educator William G. Allen barely escaped murder when he proposed marriage to the daughter of a white minister in upstate New York. Their relationship was the inspiration for a story by author Louisa May Alcott, herself an abolition sympathizer.

Free man of color professor in pre-civil war central New York.

An unknown story of a pre-civil war free man of color. A professor who was involved with a white woman in my home town. It is a northern town with much abolitionist activity. However, the town did not react kindly and he needed to flee for his life. This story was written by the professor himself at that time.
