Creating Change Through Humanism, by Roy Speckhardt

Humanism is “the radical idea that you can be good without a god.” That’s how Roy Speckhardt, the longtime executive director of the American Humanist Association, defines it. His new book, "Creating Change Through Humanism," lays out how and why people can lead moral and ethical lives without belief in a higher power. While surveys show that more and more Americans are giving up on religion, merely abandoning traditional religious faith is just one step on a path to a better way of thinking. Speckhardt explains how to take the next steps with the empathy and activism that characterize humanism today.

Humanism has inspired generations of individuals to improve themselves, their communities and their country. "Creating Change Through Humanism" describes how a humanist lifestance has influenced and can continue to advance acceptance, diversity and equality. Humanist ideals pervaded the U.S. from its founding, starting with the innovative idea of separating church and state to maintain a religiously-neutral government. Humanism has continued to propel our nation toward social progress by promoting basic human rights and dignity. The humanist movement, with its forward-thinking outlook and emphasis on critical thinking and self-reflection, has been at the forefront of such pressing social issues as civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ equality, responsible scientific freedom, and the environment and population dynamics.

Speckhardt interweaves personal stories, including his own, of individuals who have journeyed from organized religion to humanistic convictions. He encourages his readers to be open about their own lack of belief and to become active in social and political causes, so they can put their positive values into action and combat the anti-humanist prejudice propagated by the religious right.

Review
"It's hilarious that we live in a world where someone has to defend humanism. Who is against the humansts? Unfortunately, far too many on the planet fight against reason and logic. Roy fights back with an excellent argument that defends humanism and makes a great case for coming out as a nontheist. The world would be a little bit more rational if we all listened to Roy's points."--Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks and founder/CEO of TYT Network-"In his ambitious and engaging work, Creating Change Through Humanism, Roy Speckhardt others a deeply informed survey of the vibrant humanist landscape. Linking humanism to our embrace of democracy, as well as individual, social, and human rights, he explores how the ideas and philosophies may be applied to modernissues and challenges, both political and personal. A thoughtful and important contribution to the canon."--Katherine Stewart, author of The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children-"Roy Speckhardt's book is a compelling invitation for people to engage actively in social and political life as humanists. Creating Change Through Humanism will speak powerfully to the hearts and minds of tens of millions of Americans who may not have a church but definitely have a calling to participate as citizens and moral actors in the challenges of our time. Roy Speckhardt has an important and urgent message."--Jamie Raskin, professor of constitutional law at American University and Maryland State Senator

A Plain Spoken, Modern Introduction to Humanism
By David K. Chivers
A little over a decade ago, there began a huge (and welcome) output of books arguing against the existence of God. A few years after this there began to trickle out other books that talked not about whether or not there is a God, but how to approach life if indeed you had reached a point where God did not enter into your life's outlook. For just as there are many types of religions if you do believe in a god or gods, there are many types of life philosophies ( or "lifestances") available to the atheist and agnostic. Perhaps the most prominent among them in Humanism, a philosophy that can be traced back to the earliest cultures in Greece and Rome and one that has persisted in one recognizable form or another ever since.
In the introduction to his new book "Creating Change Through Humanism" , Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association, states "it's past due time to have a modern introduction to humanism." He then sets out to write just that - and he does a wonderful job of it. In eleven relatively short, straightforward chapters, Speckhardt covers the basic tenets of Humanism ,(knowledge informed by science and reason, ethics based on justice and compassion, fulfillment through relationships and community) why it makes sense to so many people who have opted out of god-based religion, it's philosophical history, and a more recent history of the American Humanist Association (which counts as past leaders Isaac Asimov and Kurt Vonnegut). His writing is clear and convincing, engaging the reader and explaining Humanism without becoming overbearing or bogged down in philosophical mazes.
In the second half of the book he explores the more practical effects of being a Humanist, and its political and civic implications. Part of this is a call to action to people who recognize their humanism, to be more open about their humanism, and more involved and engaged in both their local and worldwide communities.
This book is aimed at people who might be curious as to just what Humanism is, and to those just starting to question or explore the options of non-god based beliefs. It is meant as an introduction, and to long-time humanists much of it will be familiar ground. But for someone who is not immersed in humanism already, it is a welcome, straightforward introduction to humanism, one that does indeed fill the need for the plain spoken, modern introduction to Humanism.

Good Without God
By Simply Curious
This handbook for prospective humanists is an important resource for thoughtful people who are seeking real good. The book tells us what humanism is, why it makes sense, how it addresses real problems, and what we can do to create positive change.

American Humanist Association Executive director, Roy Speckhardt, declares “Humanism is the radical idea that you can be good without a belief in god” and goes on to demonstrate why this simple idea is so sensible and so powerful. Those who will enjoy this book are readers who prefer: science over dogma, common sense over obsolete texts, reality over mysticism, exploration over obedience, coherence over dissonance, inclusion over exclusion, evidence over ideology, and real humans over imagined deities.

The design of this book accommodates a wide range of readers’ readiness to accept and promote humanism. People new to humanism are provided a thorough and accessible introduction to the principles, philosophy, and application of this lifestance. Readers who may have already identified as humanists now have a comprehensive account of it. Experienced humanists who wish to advocate for their beliefs are provided with resources for taking action and creating change.

The second chapter begins with the author’s personal story of growing up Catholic, questioning dogma as a youngster, learning that many bible stories originated as pagan traditions, studying social ills rooted in ignorance, and starting his own progressive thinking website before joining the humanist movement. The chapter continues with the powerful stories of Dr. Anthony Pinn, and Dr. Janet Jeppson Asimov who describe their personal struggles to cross the Theistic divide and embrace Humanism.

Whereas religious beliefs are taught to us, chapter three describes a natural and innate basis for humanism. Research demonstrates that even very young children have a good sense of morality. Our reliance on careful analysis of the observable world is our most reliable source of knowledge not only within, but also beyond the bounds of scientific disciplines. Accepting the scientific process as the best method for determining all types of knowledge allows us to continue to build humanity’s knowledge base. Because empathy allows us to understand others’ feelings, it informs our reasoning toward doing the right thing.

Chapter 4 provides a history of the American Humanist Association, and chapter 5 describes the many very real prejudices against atheists. While these chapters are necessary for completeness, I found them a bit tedious primarily because they look back rather than move forward.

Humanism is marked by its positive approach, and chapter 6 provides an inspiring vision of a bright future that can be attained by applying the principles of Humanism. Many prejudices based on ignorance and sustained by religious fundamentalist will be overcome. “People will understand that science is a way to seek answers, not something to ‘believe’ in.” Future political leaders will position their belief systems in humanistic terms. “Humanists will encourage empathy, along with the compassion and a sense of inherent equal worth that flows from it, in a way that honors human knowledge about ourselves and our universe.” These ideas can become unifying forces.

Part II of the book applies the philosophical foundations of humanism to solving problems. These principles are described fully in the appendix Humanism and its Aspirations, and explored in chapter 7. Core humanist issues are explored in chapter 8. Here the contentious issues of civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, environment and population dynamics, church-state separation, death with dignity, and responsible scientific freedom are each analyzed from a humanist perspective. Clear thinking supports clear positions on each issue. Chapter 9 advises readers how to live as a humanist. Advice from a humanist perspective is provided on essential life issues, including: origin stories, family life, personal fulfillment, joy, free-will, death, and immortality. Chapter 10 is a guidebook for activism in politics, charity, social change, community, and advising young people. The final chapter strengthens the call to action, encouraging us to: “come out as humanists at every opportunity,” explain humanism to others, frame humanist positions in positive language, seek and mobilize allies, and raise public awareness.

The appendix includes three useful references: the third Humanist Manifesto describes the concepts and boundaries of humanism, the Ten Commitments provide guiding principles for teaching values, and a glossary defines several movement terms.

Although the basis of humanist philosophy is inherently universal and inclusive, this book addresses US-based readers. A bibliography provides useful references for further study, yet claims made throughout the book are not linked to supporting citations. The review copy lacks an index.

Start where you are, read this book, decide for yourself what you believe, and move forward. The book is thoughtfully conceived, well written, clearly argued, and backed by reliable evidence.

I've never really considered myself a humanist, but ...
By Karol Gajda
Although I've been following the American Humanist Association (of which Mr Speckhardt is the Director) for years I've never really considered myself a humanist. I always felt like it was a bit of a cop out. Or a cloak. Hiding behind the term atheism. But after reading this (which I purchased after reading a Reddit AMA with Mr Speckhardt) I guess I am a humanist.

Creating Change Through Humanism is a well written account of the challenges that face non-believers in a world of believers along with a historical breakdown of where humanism began and how it's growing. More importantly it's an account of how to create change through positive action. It's not about proselytizing or converting, but about being out in the open and doing good things for the sake of doing good things. For humans, animals, the Earth and the universe alike. I think we can all appreciate that message.

About the Author
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 1941), is to the Indian subcontinent what Shakespeare is to the English-speaking world. A poet, playwright, painter, and educator, Tagore was also a mystic of great complexity and depth. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.

The Cruel Idea Behind Making of a Nation
By THREEKAY
No wonder why this great poet and literature genius has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Anyone who reads this book clearly gets an understanding as to how much this author has studied human mind and its social aspects that had been troubling the humanity ever since power and materialistic possessions have taken over spiritual freedom.
The book is divided into three parts- Nationalism in the West, Nationalism of Japan and Nationalism in India.
Rabindranath’s idea about a Nation is that of an evolution of a great organization of human mind, wealth, machines and power to control the minds and bodies of all that is surrounding this great artificial body. As per him, Power is a scientific product made in the political laboratory of the Nation, through the dissolution of personal humanity. As per him the West is necessary to the East and vice versa. His main target is the British (whenever he referred as Nation) rule in India and its ill effects on the moral and spiritual efficacies of the people of India. He ripped apart the cruel motives behind the industrial, economic, educational, social and political policies of Europe against all those countries it invaded and captured with main focus on how it affected India, whose history has been made across different races over centuries of suffering and learning not by material organization but by natural social cooperation and spiritual freedom.
He praises Japan and America for its different approach towards Nationalism unlike Europe. He appreciates the ideology of these Nations which imbibed power and wealth through love and admiration but not through ambition and greed. He warns the forces of Nation against the creation of politicians, soldiers, manufacturers and bureaucrats which he says shall bring down the entire gigantic organization of the Nation one day to bite the dust. That would be the day when the East would come back into its hay days and start a new history. He appeals to Japan and America to view the ideologies and histories of many countries like India which cannot be called as Nations due to their diverse coexistence of different races with respect and positive approach instead of insulting them and treating them as beggars.

The reader would be awestruck to come across such a vast expanse of usage of English verbatim in this book. I am totally perplexed by the way European organization has been constructively criticized apart by the author at the same time warning it of the detrimental effects it would have if they force upon spiritual countries like India.

The author seems to have totally targeted the European way of conquering the World through its massive Organization of military and commerce, but seems to have ignored the benefits it brought upon all those countries it went to. The benefits might be undervalued compared to the exploitation and conflicts it created in those Nations.

My rating is 4.5 out of 5

A book very much for our times
By John Newton
This Penguin reprint is important and timely. I believe that, among other things, Tagore's NATIONALISM should be thoroughly read and carefully thought about by every member of both the British Parliament and the U.S. Congress and White House. (There are also closely related things in the middle pieces of Tagore's CREATIVE UNITY and in his LETTERS TO A FRIEND.) The indictment of the nationalism developed in the West and the account of the contrasting ways in which human beings have related to each other in older civilisations of the East have the strongest application to our own times. Knowledge of them could also promote a more sympathetic understanding of current suspicion of and hostility to the West. The West has given much to the rest of the world, but Tagore shows and/or reminds us that it also owes the world the gravest apology. He himself writes at one point in the later CREATIVE UNITY that the post-WW1 move to 'internationalism' made little difference to the arrogance and greed that still governed much of the West's behaviour to the rest of the world. Those vices obviously still govern much of it now, as in the appalling invasion of Iraq. The full and proper making of that grave apology to the rest of the world could help promote worldwide peace by being the start of a more concilatory because penitent attitude in the West - to, among others, the so-called Islamic 'extremists'.

Demistified Nationalism
By Jay
The book enlightens us about when and how the term nationalism got into use. Rabindranath Tagor explain us the dangers of commercial and political short sightedness. Nationalism in practice makes people fight against each other under the pseudo identity given by nationalism.

Book is very interested for the people who think about the society at large, worried about the fights between people under various banners, tries to find out the solution.

Book is not giving effective solution. It only makes readers to think over the issues.

A Watershed Work!
By John Drake
This is the definitive watershed work that brought Buddhism to the West and explains it in a manner that's very easy for Westerners to understand. It is a wonderful book that uses a question and answer structure like the Catholic Catechism to enlighten the reader on the Buddhist faith. It covers every aspect of Buddhism and there's much to learn from it whether you are a beginner or a master or from the East or the West. I strongly recommend this book. I got so much out of it. This book answers a lot of very important questions, including ones that I have had for some time. It's been a real blessing to me.

Absolutely jam-packed with revelations of monumental significance
By James Hobbs
This is a brilliant book written by the foremost Western expert on Buddism. This is a beautiful work that will help anyone even beginners to understand and grow on their spiritual path. It is an excellent book for people seeking truth and the enlightenment that we are all meant to achieve. Olcott has indeed found the truth and handed us the keys in this comprehensive masterpiece.
I benefitted immensely from this book, which I believe everyone should read. It's absolutely jam-packed with revelations of monumental significance. I learned so much from it. There is always something new to learn and I'm grateful whenever I find a new gem. I firmly believe I was led to this book, which is an amazing and rare find.
This is the perfect book on Buddhism for the Western mind. Olcott explains the tenets in very clear language and lays it out in a highly organized fashion that makes it very easy for a Westerner to understand. It is the ultimate FAQ on Buddhism and also an amazing bridge between East and West. It is the perfect book for Westerners interested in Buddhism, and it's most enlightening for Easterners as well. It is really a book that everyone can enjoy. It's a best of the East and West.
This is a book that I intend to recommend to all my friends, and I will have to pick up more books on Buddhism now that I've found so many vital truths in this one. I highly recommend this book if you are serious in any way about this subject. Though it was written by an expert and enlightening for those who are very knowledgeable, it's also the perfect book for beginners.

My Mother's Wars, by Lillian Faderman

An acclaimed writer on her mother’s tumultuous life as a Jewish immigrant in 1930s New York and her life-long guilt when the Holocaust claims the family she left behind in Latvia

A story of love, war, and life as a Jewish immigrant in the squalid factories and lively dance halls of New York’s Garment District in the 1930s, My Mother’s Wars is the memoir Lillian Faderman’s mother was never able to write. The daughter delves into her mother’s past to tell the story of a Latvian girl who left her village for America with dreams of a life on the stage and encountered the realities of her new world: the battles she was forced to fight as a woman, an immigrant worker, and a Jew with family left behind in Hitler’s deadly path.

The story begins in 1914: Mary, the girl who will become Lillian Faderman’s mother, just seventeen and swept up with vague ambitions to be a dancer, travels alone to America, where her half-sister in Brooklyn takes her in. She finds a job in the garment industry and a shop friend who teaches her the thrills of dance halls and the cheap amusements open to working-class girls. This dazzling life leaves Mary distracted and her half-sister and brother-in-law scandalized that she has become a “good-time gal.” They kick her out of their home, an event with consequences Mary will regret for the rest of her life.

Eighteen years later, still barely scraping by as a garment worker and unmarried at thirty-five, Mary falls madly in love and has a torrid romance with a man who will never marry her, but who will father Lillian Faderman before he disappears from their lives. America is in the midst of the Depression, Hitler is coming to power in Europe, and New York’s garment workers are just beginning to unionize. Mary makes tentative steps to join, despite her lover’s angry opposition. As National Socialism engulfs Europe, Mary realizes she must find a way to get her family out of Latvia, and she spends frenetic months chasing vague promises and false rumors of hope. Pregnant again, after having submitted to two wrenching back-room abortions, and still unmarried, Mary faces both single motherhood and the devastating possibility of losing her entire Eastern European family.

Drawing on family stories and documents, as well as her own tireless research, Lillian Faderman has reconstructed an engrossing and essential chapter in the history of women, of workers, of Jews, and of the Holocaust as immigrants experienced it from American shores.

From Booklist
Drawing on the stories told to her when she was a girl, Faderman recontructs her mother’s life, devotions, and tragedies in early 1930s America in a memoiristic tale. At 17, Mary Lifton leaves her shtetl in Latvia for New York City, where she takes up residence with her half sister. It’s a short-lived arrangement, and Mary supports herself by working on and off in the garment industry. Eighteen years later, Mary, now 35 and never married, by chance meets the younger, charismatic Moishe, Faderman’s father. The two embark on a passionate, tumultuous affair that lasts for years as Mary participates in a labor-union uprising and has a romance with another man, and, while barely making ends meet, two unplanned pregnancies. An affecting undercurrent is Mary’s unending loyalty to her family left behind in Latvia. When the Nazi movement begins to gain ground in Eastern Europe, Mary’s affections for Moishe are outweighed by her harrowing desperation to save her family. As Faderman vividly chronicles her mother’s intense personality and complex experiences, she also freshly illuminates the Jewish immigrant experience. --Leah Strauss

Review
"This is an exquisite piece of history—both resonantly personal and full of revelatory moments in  the history of  women, and of  New York in the early days of  the garment workers union and the shadow of the Holocaust.  The sympathy and understanding Faderman shows for her immigrant mother, and her whole family, reminded me again of what I love about memoir. This is not just a story; these are lives on the page."  —Dorothy Allison

“Faderman’s story of her immigrant mother is so vividly imagined that you can taste the borscht Mary eats, squirm at the claustrophobia of her tiny rented room, and be swept up in the sensual delight that will betray her.”  —Janice Steinberg, author of The Tin Horse

“This book is a work of originality, written with such imaginative sympathy that I read it with unabating pleasure from beginning to end.” —Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments

“Lillian Faderman is an extraordinary storyteller, one of the few who can tell a painful story with a complex ending—and imbue it with humor, sensuality, and earthy grace, in every sentence.” —Amy Bloom, author of Away

“The sympathy and understanding Faderman shows for her immigrant mother and her whole family reminded me again of what I love about memoir. This is not just a story; these are lives on the page.” —Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina

“My Mother’s Wars tells the aching story of immigrant factory workers in the decades preceding World War II—sad lives made sadder by the terrifying knowledge that their families in Europe are being extinguished. The book is part memoir, part reconstruction . . . and all artistry.” —Edith Pearlman, author of Binocular Vision

“Faderman is a skilled storyteller and a careful documentarian . . . the historical details in the book have been provided by extensive research. It is these historical details and Faderman’s lyrical storytelling skill that make this book such an inviting read.” —Carol Poll, Jewish Book Council

“A remarkable work of reconstruction . . . As usual, Faderman’s seemingly effortless prose is the result of years of patient research. As far as possible, she has made sure that the past will be accurately remembered.”  —The Gay & Lesbian Review

“To be sure, the Holocaust figures crucially in [Lillian Faderman’s] new memoir . . . but her book is more than a testimony of the Holocaust— it is a love story, a family memoir and, above all, an American tale.”  —Jonathan Kirsch, The Jewish Journal

“[A] strikingly intelligent and emotionally wrenching narrative.”  —Philip Jason, The Washington Independent Review of Books

“A gripping personal testimony. Author Lillian Faderman shares her mother's story of immigrating to America with high hopes of dancing, only to be swept up in the undercurrents of New York, and the struggles of being a worker in the garment industry. . . . A must for history and memoir collections focusing on personal tales.” —Midwest Book Review

“Faderman expertly explores a jarring view into the immigrant life of Jewish Holocaust survivors living in the US.”  —Nick Pachelli, The Advocate

“As Faderman vividly chronicles her mother’s intense personality and complex experiences, she also freshly illuminates the Jewish immigrant experience.”  —Booklist

“Faderman commands her material in this page-turner—no small feat with a subject so close to home.” —Make/shift

Gripping, heartbreaking, and so well written
By A reader
This is one of the most powerful books I have read in a long time. Lillian Fadermann tells the fascinating story of her mother's life in two intertwined stories: first, the story of her very long, painful love affair, and second, her grappling with the depression, the events leading up to World War II, and the horrifying threat of the Holocaust, particularly to her extended family back in Latvia. The author weighs in here and there about her mother's less fortunate decisions ("oh, Mama, Mama...") with such beauty and tenderness. I was glued to this book, and it lingers in my mind, days later.

I was so impressed with the author's ability to be intimate and warm, to recount horrifying events with such simplicity and clarity, and to build suspense that draws us in like a magnet, even we all know what the devastating outcomes are going to be. She begins each chapter with a few historical facts that tell much about the times, the attitudes of people, and events to come. The book teaches so much about life in the sweatshops, worldwide anti-Semitism, the desperate situation of the Jews, the attitudes toward single women, and so many hideous world situations beyond anyone's control. I had to close the book several times to catch my breath, wipe away tears, and just take in the enormity of it all.

In every way, the book is remarkably effective, profoundly disturbing, and very much worth reading. Most highly recommended to anyone interested in history, the crazy paradoxes of human nature, and outstanding storytelling, and to anyone who was ever a struggling young girl (or boy) foolishly in love for the first time.

"May you live in interesting times"
By kiki
There is an old saying "May you live in interesting times". This can be understood as a blessing or a curse. Lillian Faderman's mother lived both meanings of it.

Escaping from the poverty of a Latvian shtetl in 1914, she finds herself working long hours, six days a week, doing piecework in a garment factory in New York. Mareleh Luft struggles to learn English and changes her name to Mary Lifton to "Americanize" herself. When she left Latvia at 17, she promised her younger brother she would send for him, but saving enough money for his passage to New York is difficult.

Mary participates in organizing strikes of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. This also makes her aware of the political situation worldwide. She sees the rise of the Nazi party and becomes frantic to get her family out of Latvia.

I absolutely couldn't put this book down. Ms.Faderman has honored her extended family by preserving their fascinating lives in this book. I got so invested in all of the people in this book, except for Morris, the user, of course. I highly recommend "My Mother's Wars" by Lillian Faderman.

As a former New Yorker
By BookAce
whose family lived in New York City since the 1920's, and as one who lived in the Bronx in the 40's and 50's and knew quite well, some of the folks who had been in concentration camps, this book spoke to my heart, my memory and my emotions. I understood also, the ghettos, the tenements - sometimes-miserable living quarters thereof, and the thronging grimy streets whose glittering counterparts were the night life of a living breathing city of immigrants, many of them trying to save a buck to bring a beloved family member across the ocean.

Who knew, back then before all mayhem and murder broke loose, what Hitler (or Mussolini) would be capable of doing? Mary (Mereleh) Lifton did not, until it was too late. My own grandparents in their complacency perhaps, stayed on in Italy until it was almost too late -- they lost all their money and their home, fleeing Mussolini with their children in 1931. Italy was not spared. Poland, Russia, England were not spared. And even Latvia was not spared. But who could see all this coming? Some did, a very few, it seems, until it was too late to do anything to save lives.

And who knew what life-saving feats one "ugly" man would be capable of doing for the woman he dearly loved, but who did not love him back? - Could Dominick have helped Mary realize this dream, this farewell-to-my-family promise of hers? We will never know. I remember my mother telling me about "arranged" marriages where "ugly" men turned out to be loving caring providers for their families, although the women they married did not love them back. How sad. It seemed that Stella was the lucky one here, although Mary could never understand why she would marry such an uncomely man who was actually an angel in disguise ("go out with your friend -- I'll take the kids to the zoo").

Mary Lifton comes to the shores of NY in the early 1900's as a young woman, with dreams of becoming a dancer on the Yiddish stage. Staying with relatives, half-sister Sarah and brother-in-law Sam, she realizes only the drab tiring actuality of being a six-day-a-week piece worker in a Brooklyn garment factory. Her wages are miserable, her life dictated by the man of the house, and her dreams - well her dreams, no longer that of becoming a dancer, are sometimes of her little brother Hirschel, her beloved brother, who appears to her in anguished dreams. Is this a foretaste of the future?

Mary never becomes a dancer -- the only dancing she does at first is in the company of Goldie -- dear Goldie -- a brash gum-snapping garment worker who wants the best in life, can do it on a shoestring budget, and takes Mary with her for a whirlwind ride through the night life of the gas-lit streets (the same ones as portrayed by such artists as John Sloan and the Ashcan School) of New York City. Goldie -- Dear Goldie -- I mourned you. My Nonna Lucia almost met the same fate -- I would not be here if that had happened to her. Mary almost met the same fate -- and in doing so was propelled into a harder-scrabble existence than the one she had before.

But Mary meets a man -- she is entranced by this man Moishe, who is half gangster and half lover. Her life is swept away because of him -- everything she does is for him -- she loses sight of anything else, and perhaps because of that her family on the other side of the ocean suffer?? No one is sent for - Mary does not have the money. Dominick did but she does not love Dominick. And Moishe? Well, Moishe is not what he seems. Mary does not see that.

There is an angel here -- in the form of Ray -- Mary's sister who DID come over to the US - Ray is a tough no nonsense woman with "flat-footed sanity" that Mary can lean on, a shoulder to cry on, a voice of reason that Mary does not always listen to -- perhaps Ray is a woman-oriented-woman, as she spends her time with her female friends and cuts her own swath through life, without needing a man to buoy her or her emotions up. There is another angel--Ricki- a friend and neighbor, who is there when Mary is at a very low place in her life

Meanwhile the trauma and terror overseas continues to escalate - Mary's dreams of Hirschel are more terrifying than ever. Where is Moishe? What happens to Dominick? What sadness is contained in the letters Mary receives! Letters, not only from Hirschel, but her mother, "di mameh" -- but from the White House.

Was Mary guilty of what happened to her loved ones ? Could she have acted earlier? Knowing what we do now of that part of history, it is very hard to know, and impossible to judge. Mary and Ray do their utmost best to deliver their loved ones from the killing machines overseas, only to meet with great frustration in every agency they rush to - every government agent they plead with - there is this `quota" and because of it, loved ones overseas will die....horribly.

Lillian Faderman brings such life to her words. How can one not feel the pain, the grime, the bone-wracking exhaustion, the fear, the hopes, the anguish that attend not only Mary, but those living in that era, working their fingers to the bone, and coming home to a small dingy apartment with a murphy bed and a sometimes- surly landlord/lady. But there are joys there as well--the days at Coney Island, the night life, friends who care deeply, and... "butterfly wings" a beautiful way of announcing Lillian's entrance into this world.

"My Mother's Wars" also deals not only with back-alley abortions, but with the almost-unheard of acceptance of an unwed woman's pregnancy - gifts and good wishes pour in from the very ones that Mary fears will turn against her. There is beauty in this grimy sometimes-tragic world after all.

"My Mother's Wars" helped me in some way deal with my own mother's wars - Sis and I were the only ones she confided in -- her personal problems and deeply expressed emotions were a very heavy burden for two little girls, especially as toddlers. We had our Nonna Lucia to lean on and be nurtured and loved by -- Lillian had her beloved Ray.

"My Mother's Wars" is a book that as it is read, is deeply felt - lives are played out in front of the reader, lives lost in many different ways, as is love lost, love yearning, love dying. I hope Mary found peace. I grieve for Dominick--I can only hope he found someone who truly loved him back. I applaud Lillian and Ray for being the strong women who held a burden of their family on their backs and walked through it all with love in their hearts and their shoulders unbent.

BTW -- I love the cover design -- a graceful woman whirls and dances - happiness, music, joyful abandon are evoked in this photo -- yet it mirrors the whirlwind that will soon descend on Eastern Europe as well as the whirlwind of thoughts and fears that Mary and Ray will soon traverse as they desperately try to rescue their loved ones from the vortex of evil.

The Politics of Sectarianism in Postwar Lebanon, by Bassel F. Salloukh, Rabie Barakat, Jinan S. Al-Habbal

The wave of popular uprisings that swept across the Arab world starting in December 2010 rattled regimes from Morocco to Oman. However, Lebanon’s sectarian system proved immune to the domestic and regional pressures unleashed by the Arab Spring. How can this be explained? How has the country’s political elite dealt with challenges to the system? And, finally, what lessons can other Arab states draw from Lebanon’s sectarian experience?

Using extensive field work, The Politics of Sectarianism in Postwar Lebanon looks at the mix of institutional, clientelist, and discursive practices that sustain the sectarian nature of Lebanon. The book exposes snapshots of an ever-expanding sectarian web that occupies substantial areas of everyday Lebanese life. It also surveys struggles waged by opponents of the system – by women, teachers, public sector employees, students or coalitions across NGOs – and how their efforts are often sabotaged or contained by various systematic forces.

Review
“The Politics of Sectarianism in Postwar Lebanon provides a very thoughtful account of sectarianism in the Lebanese electoral system, military, media, and associational life. Above and beyond this, the authors' theoretically rich post-culturalist lens offers considerable insight into the role played by institutions, discourse, clientalism, economic power, political mobilization, and regional context. This book should be read by all those interested in both Lebanese politics and the broader dynamics of entrenched identity-based politics.” (Rex Brynen, McGill University)

“A must-read for anyone interested in what is going on in Lebanon and the Middle East today. Adapting Foucault's tools of 'practices of governance and practices of freedom,' Salloukh and his colleagues show in detail how a complex form of sectarian governance operates in Lebanon, and survey the practices of freedom for democratic change that have developed in response. The diffusion of similar practices in the post-popular uprisings Arab World bodes ill for the future of the region.” (James Tully, University of Victoria, Canada)

“The authors make an important contribution to the study of identity politics in the Middle East by showing how sectarianism is reproduced and reinforced as a socio-political force in Lebanon. Their account examines the ways in which sectarianism plays out in multiple policy areas such as the labor and women's movements, the media, and legal frameworks, and shows how sectarian political forces wittingly and unwittingly undercut the efforts of civil society actors to organize along alternative lines. The book offers a far more compelling treatment than many journalistic accounts of the dynamics of sectarianism and is a valuable complement to existing scholarly literature, which largely focuses on the emergence rather than reproduction and dynamic reconstitution of sectarianism in Lebanon. This is an important approach because it addresses the critical question of why sectarianism persists and why it is so difficult to undo.” (Melani Cammett, Harvard University)

“A judicious and well-argued case for why sectarianism continues to dominate the Lebanese political system, even though there is nothing inevitable about that result. Salloukh and his co-authors demonstrate that sectarianism is the result of a carefully constructed and mutually reinforcing system of political, economic, and social institutions, not the product of some primordial Lebanese political culture. But they also demonstrate how hard it is to change the institutions that have entrenched sectarianism in the Lebanese system.” (F. Gregory Gause, III, Texas A&M University)

“By unpacking and critically assessing the production and reproduction of sectarian identities across a broad range of social, political, and economic domains, and how these processes intersect with and affect governance, political economy, and state-society relations, the authors of this exceptional volume have added immeasurably to our understanding of the role of sectarian identities in all spheres of Lebanese life.” (Steven Heydemann, United States Institute of Peace)

From the Back Cover
"In this wonderful collection, John Paraskevopoulos has lovingly selected passages that illuminate centuries of wisdom in Buddhist themes that cohere and blend into the great flow of boundless compassion."
Professor Mark Unno, University of Oregon

"This anthology succeeds in bringing together a perfect compendium of inspirational quotations from all the major Buddhist traditions, demonstrating the strength of the Other-Power approach. The readings take us, by way of four sections, from our current reality to our ultimate goal; with great skill and clarity, the author introduces each by giving the Buddhist context. This book will be an excellent companion for our journey along the Pure Land way."
Dr Kenneth Mullen, University of Glasgow

"Breaking away from desiccated concepts of 'emptiness' and humanist reductionism, Paraskevopoulos offers us nothing less than an antidote to secularized Buddhism for modern audiences. This wonderful anthology exudes the perfume of wisdom, beauty and devotion to prove that, if words have any meaning, Buddhism is indeed a religion."
Professor Patrick Laude, Georgetown University

Beautiful Book
By Arkady Fayngor
Being an admirer of the first book by the same author The Call of the Infinite, I was truly awaiting this book to arrive by mail. My expectations proved completely justified: The Fragrance of Light is an amazing read! Rev. John Paraskevopoulos did a fantastic job of carefully selecting the deeply revelatory and inspirational quotes, as well as providing the essential explanations of the most crucial Buddhist subject matters. In the well-established style of the previous book, the author goes to the very core of the Buddhist doctrine, and explains it in easy to understand, yet very beautiful language. What I particularly liked is that in accordance with the traditional Buddhist style, the truth of the state of affairs in the highly troubled world is perfectly revealed without any attempt to retouch the obvious sufferings, while the greatness and the blissful nature of the Ultimate Reality are presented in full agreement with Mahayana tradition.

I am sure to come back to the book's pages many times for further inspiration and reference, and I am expressing my gratitude to the author for providing such an opportunity.

I can hardly recommend this book highly enough
By Stephen Bastasch
I can hardly recommend this book highly enough. It is a call to return to the transcendent source at the heart of all religion, as well as a description of what happens in our own hearts when we do this. In particular the book illustrates how the Buddhist Pure Land way, and in particular, Jodo Shinshu (Shin) Buddhism functions both as an illustration of the path to transcendence and as a means of personally experiencing the Source. The author, who mostly remains silent throughout, operating instead as a wise editor and compiler of myriad sources, serves as an invisible tour guide toward Other Power - and the examples he has chosen each point in that single real but inconceivable direction. This book really belongs on the shelf of everyone interested in spirituality. But especially for Amidist Buddhists, it is a pure godsend, to be returned to over and over again as both a pedagogic resource, and as a treasure trove of testimonies from those who liveimmersed in the Infinitely Compassionate Transcendent.
