Stop being Deluded. This book is a must read for all thinking people

Bay has opened my eyes. He has explained the reason behind some of the stupidity that led to the Global Financial Crisis but more importantly he expresses solutions to equity and fairness that we have believed for years are the ONLY way to change the world and make this a better planet to live on. This is a MUST read book for anyone who thinks and should be mandatory for every politician, government employee and business owner.

Provocative Diatribe for the Resurrection of Economic Freedom

Bay has done an excellent job of highlighting some of the issues we are facing in democracies around the world and refusing to deal with them in an honest or authentic manner. While his recommended models are good, they will not find a quick acceptance within the business world, just like the need for flat organizations. Leaders will continue to be self absorbed and focused on delivering unreasonable profits to themselves and stockholders at the peril of under cutting the workers, who are really the ones that make a company run until the pain becomes untenable by one side of the other. This breaking point will be painful and shocking for many but there is no way to avoid it without some serious changes to attitudes and cultures within companies and among employees. Don't pick this book up if your are uncomfortable reading about the tough facts of business today. If you feel you are a change agent then by all means read, empower and expand.

Please disregard some of the other reviews of this product as they have been transferred by Amazon.com to this product when they were written for another product -- no fault of the reviewers. Amazon.com does not currently recognize the need for different reviews of different editions of the same work. This review is of the edition of William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell published by U Chicago Press (2011) for the Bodelian library and edited by Michael Phillips. Some of these other reviews really need to be deleted as they are completely irrelevant to this specific product. I will be writing here about the hardcover edition. I have not yet seen a copy of the paperback edition.

This beautiful and professionally-bound U Chicago edition of MHH appears to be a cover to cover facsimile of the Bodelian's copy of Marriage of Heaven and Hell. I mean "cover to cover" quite literally: the image posted here as the cover is a full-color photographic reproduction of a nineteenth-century binding, wear marks and all. Upon opening the book you will find a full-color reproduction of the inside cover, handwriting, bookstamp, and all. The next page -- which is a blank page in the original -- is again reproduced exactly, water stains and all. What you will be purchasing with this edition, then, is an exact reproduction of Copy B of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell from cover to cover, with the addition of Phillips's extensive introduction, textual transcription, notes, commentary, a checklist of copies, and bibliography. There's simply nothing like it; not even the edition published by the William Blake Trust for the Illuminated Books series. Owning this book is as close to owning an original copy of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell as you can get.

The William Blake Archive does have Copy B of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell online with a textual transcription, so you can preview the specific contents of the reproductions there. This edition, however -- being a full, cover to cover reproduction of the book owned by the Bodelian -- includes several additional plates that aren't part of the same sequence of images available on the Blake archive website (though probably available by selecting the individual plate and clicking "compare"). These additional images include several different copies of what is Plate 14 in the Bodelian copy with alternate copies of a few other plates from the MHH (such as A Song of Liberty and one of the Memorable Fancies), and a copy of "Our End is Come" preceding the text of MHH. You can read more details about Copy B of the MHH on the William Blake Archive website.

Overall, well worth the price and a good purchase even if you already own the William Blake Trust's edition. I think this volume represents the future of Blake publishing: professional facsimile editions of each individual copy.

Since this is a fairly serious work, the Amazon mandated choices regarding plot, mood, pace and characters really don't apply. Since Amazon groups together all reviews of books with the same title, the one to get is edited by Michael Phillips. Mr Phillips has spent almost a lifetime studying William Blake and carefully presents his insight as well as differences in various editions of the book.
To appreciate this book, one has to take into account the political and religious turmoil when it was written. Mr Phillips gives a lot of background to help understand the era.

I do not understand why, but this is not the entire book. It is only three pages and only contains the Proverbs of Hell. I wish I noticed that before I bought it. The whole book is available online for free, so don't bother with this incomplete version.

Without deepest contemplation of the Soul, all is in error.

_I have heard some call this work a confused jumble of unrelated concepts. These people just didn't get it. There is one unified theme to the Phaedrus: without a deep connection to the soul and to the higher Reality only accessible to the soul, then all human endeavors are in error.

_The first part of the dialogue deals with three speeches on the topic of love. This is used only as an example and is not the primary theme (though it is an extremely thorough and compelling examination of the subject.) The first speech (by Lysias) is clearly in error- it is badly composed, badly reasoned, and supports what is clearly the wrong conclusion. The second speech (by Socrates), while an impeccable model of correct rhetoric, and reaching the correct conclusion is also essentially flawed- for it makes no appeal to the deepest fundamental causes of things. Simply put, it lacks soul. The third argument (attributed to Stesichorus) however, delves deeply into the soul. In fact, the core of the argument is centered around the proof of the existence and nature of the soul. That is the consistency here- unless you are Philosopher enough to have looked deeply within your own soul, to have made contact (recollection) with ultimate Reality (Justice, Wisdom, Beauty, Temperance, etc.) then your arguments are just empty words- even if you are accidentally on the correct side.

_The second part of the dialogue concentrates on showing how true rhetoric is more than "empty rhetoric" (i.e. just clever arguments and tricks used to sway the masses.) True rhetoric is shown to literally be the art of influencing the soul through words. It also reads as the perfect description, and damnation, of modern politics and the legal system. No wonder Socrates was condemned to later take poison- he actually BELIEVED in Justice, Truth, and the Good. As a Philosopher he could not compromise on such things for he knew the profound damage and that it would do to his soul and to his "wings."

Favorite. Book. Ever.

This book is by far, my favorite. It does not just deal with how to get over something, but also how to improve your life. It has a psychological basis wherein you attract good things in your life by setting your mind into thinking positively and attracting things that you want in your life. If you think about something constantly, the tendency is that you tend to get inclined more with that thing and eventually it will enter your life. This book highlights the things that you should be focusing about. And the pointers I have learned here is essential in attracting good things in my life as I set my mind toward things that empower me. Good job in writing this book!

Very insightful

I had heard of the law of attraction before reading this book, but wasn't really aware of its meaning or significance. This book made clear what the law of attraction is and how it can be used to create a better life. I won't give away too many details, but I believe that this book can really help those who are struggling with unfulfillment or unhappiness in their lives. It was not too long of a read, but each page is packed with helpful information. Highly recommend!

About the Author

EUNSUN KIM grew up in North Korea. At age 11, she fled the country and began the harrowing 9-year journey that led her to freedom. Today, she lives with her husband in South Korea, where she's pursuing her master's degree and working for an NGO promoting human rights in North Korea.

SEBASTIEN FALLETTI has been the Korea correspondent for the French newspaper Le Figaro since 2009. He covers political and business news across Asia. Born in Paris, Sébastien is now based in Seoul and Shanghai.

A Remarkable Tale

Eunsun Kim's tale of her escape from North Korea, along with her mother and her older sister is remarkably easy to read, remarkable engrossing and just a remarkable tale in general.

When Eunsun Kim was 11 years old her mother determined that they could no longer live in North Korea. Eunsun's grandparents were dead, her father was dead, almost everything in the house was sold for money to buy food but there was almost no food to be had because North Korea was in the middle of its Great Famine (1994-1998). Depending on whose statistics you use, the estimates range anywhere from 250,000 to 3,500,000 people starved to death or died from starvation-related causes. Of course, it is hard to say for sure because North Korea is such a closed off society.

Eunsun Kim and her family lived in the northernmost part of North Korea and they decided to cross the Tumen River into China and live as illegal aliens. They would have no promise of safety, no guarantee of work and risked being shot by the border guards on both sides of the border. But, at least they would have chance to eat.

She details several botched attempts at escape and I was pleased to see that at least one border guard was a decent human being. He could see they were starving and desperate and he took pity on them and let them go with a warning - twice! But, he couldn't feed them because there was no food to be had so this small family eventually makes it to China. The family tries to stay together but when Eunsun Kim's mother is sold into sexual slavery (she calls it an unofficial marriage, but the entire purpose of the marriage was to produce a son for her "husband" and no one recognized the marriage as legitimate) the family splits up. The daughters have a better time of it, but it is not easy.

As you can tell by the title, eventually Eunsun Kim makes it to freedom. Their last push to make it to South Korea is tension-filled and her story of how she adjusts to life in South Korea is interesting in and of itself. Now, she lives in South Korea and has lived and travelled all over the world studying (making up for lost years when she had to work to collect wood rather than go to school so they could get food) and promoting her book.

Ironically, A Thousand Miles to Freedom is late to be translated into English (it was published in French in 2012). I say ironically because the United States has had so much involvement with North and South Korea over the last 60+ years. This translation is very good (I teach Spanish and I know how hard it can be to make foreign text sound smooth in a different language). The text flows easily and makes it sound like Eunsun Kim is sitting with you telling her story in everyday, conversational language over a cup of tea.

Last two lines of the book: "The Kim dynasty has so successfully isolated my country that it would be easy for the rest of the world to forget about us. If my memoir can even play a small part in raising global awareness about our suffering and about the tragedies taking place at the hands of this regime, then all that I have endured will not have been in vain."

Heartbreaking, yet inspiring...

When it comes to memoirs, I've always been a bit hot and cold. In fact, recently, it takes an incredible memoir to actually make me feel something, particularly since a lot of the time they come across a teeny bit 'woe is me'. Due to this, I was surprised at how much I liked A Thousand Miles to Freedom. I found it to be highly informative and told with a breezy writing style.

The situation in North Korea wasn't one that I was particularly privy to. It only came to my radar after that whole The Interview/Sony drama and I was even more interested after I heard that some people were being arrested in North Korea for making a sign from The Hunger Games. I have to say that A Thousand Miles to Freedom was extremely eye-opening for me. I had no idea that the situation in North Korea (that has been spanning decades) was so precarious. This book definitely makes me want to check out even more books on North Korea to try to figure out how a this totalitarian society came to be.

Eunsun's journey in A Thousand Miles to Freedom was extremely heartbreaking, yet inspiring. She went through so much, but in the end persevered. I loved that her story was told in a matter of fact way as a lot of the times, memoirs tend to sensationalize certain events and that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth as the sensationalism is obvious from a mile away.

Overall, I really liked A Thousand Miles to Freedom. It was an incredibly quick read (would've read it faster if it hadn't been for life getting in the way instead of letting me just read) and while this is a story that's extremely upsetting, it didn't leave me feeling depressed and hopeless towards the end of it, the way a lot of other memoirs do. So, this is highly recommended.

A horrific story told in a simplistic style

This story at first reads like it's written for young readers, in a very simplistic style. The entire book can be read in a few hours.

Eunsum Kim was only 11 years old and already writing her last will and testament. A year before her own father had starved to death. Both parents had had decent jobs that were subsidized by the Soviet regime. When the Soviet Empire collapsed in the early 1990s, North Korea lost all its support and food became harder to find. By the mid 1990s, North Koreans were starving.

Kim's mother was headstrong and determined to get out of the tyranical regime. This was not easy. Kim, along with her older sister and mother, fled to China by crossing the Tuman river in winter. They then endured what many refugee women experience: they were taken in by human smugglers and sold as sex slaves. While Kim leaves many of the personal details out, she gives readers enough stories about what her mother endured, just to stay away from North Korea. These women no doubt lived through hellish times. This part of China, the far northwestern part of the country, seems to be ignored by the Chinese government due to its proximity with North Korea and its citizens live in poverty, too The fear of getting caught as an illegal haunted them for their entire time..

This is a story of courage by these three women. It also illustrates the poverty and social class of these refugees in both China, Mongolia and South Korea. Kim's mother never gave up hope for a better life.

I'm not sure if the simplistic style is the true style of the author, or from the translator. The childish view of the world never leaves this narrative, even though Kim retells the story from when it began 18 years ago, in 1997. One can only admire the entire family for surviving the ordeal and reliving their lives in a much better life now.

There is only one short scene where a North Korean guard yells out obscenities at the women. If that scene had been edited out, this would be approved for young readers.

This book may not win any awards, but it brings to light the absolute poverty North Koreans live under, ruled by brutal regime. That any North Koreans make it out alive is quite astounding. I'm sure the Great Leader of North Korea would rather see this book burn.

Took longer to download than it took to read

Sorry for being negative however when 22 pages are product photos and only 7 pages have a paragraph or less of writing, $0.99 is too much for this 'picture' book of Amazon products. No real information and it takes less than a couple minutes to read from cover to cover.

don't bother

Brief synopsis: at home you can hide your stuff. Here are some pictures, but no reference on how to get these items to hide stuff in.
While traveling, you should hide your stuff. Here are some more pictures.
You should hide your internet passwords, maybe use a burn phone, and be careful giving folks your email address.

It took me longer to type this than it did to read through the entire book. Don't waste your money.
