Great resource on the lesser known goddesses - The Erinyes, the Fates, Themis, Ananke, Ate, more ......and also Dionysius. Scholarship is substantial and deeper psychological interpretations by this Jungian psychologist lend further meaning to this work. A do-not-miss for anyone seeking to understand the early feminine mythical roots of what became a patriarchal Greek and Roman mythology..... and indeed the forces to which even the gods of Olympus are subservient.

The late John Sanford was a remarkable writer, beginning as an Episcopal minister & ending as a Jungian analyst -- and combining both lives & worlds of thought in his books. In this short but very rich little volume, he explores the lesser-known goddesses of the Greeks as powerful forces in the human psyche, delving into the mysteries of our hidden (and not so hidden) emotional lives, the personal unconscious dramas that shape our souls, and the ways in which those forces express themselves -- often to our dismay or shock. But he also offers ways of learning from the forces these goddesses embody, in order that we might move a bit closer to wholeness as human beings -- and even if few (if any) of us ever really get there completely, it is possible to come within a reasonable distance. In short, as with his previous books, Sanford intelligently &n compassionately examines the human condition, and provides valuable knowledge toward becoming more self-aware, more centered, and living more fully realized lives. Most highly recommended!

About the Author

Monty Nelson, PhD, has been a psychologist in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada since 1998.  He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta. He is in full-time private practice conducting neuropsychological assessments in Edmonton, rural Alberta, and the northern territories. He has been a consultant for various adult FASD clinics since 2008. In collaboration with the Lakeland Centre for FASD he does training for other clinicians about the FASD diagnostic process. He has presented at provincial, national, and international conferences on assessments of adults with FASD.

The Hon. Marguerite Trussler, B.A., LL.B., LL.M., LL.D. (Hon.), Q.C. was a justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench for 20 years. Following her retirement she became the chair of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission where she developed an interest in the issues surrounding FASD. For a number of years, she chaired the Institute of Health Economics’ steering committee for the Alberta initiatives on FASD and was the moderator of the Institute’s 2013 consensus conference on Legal Issues of FASD. Since May of 2014, she has been the Ethics Commissioner for the Legislature of the Province of Alberta, Canada.

The mystery, I thought, is what makes life exciting. Exploring the mystery was as taking ourselves back slowly bit by bit, and yet becoming more than we were by having taken the journey. "The journey changes us, doesn't it?"

His eyes glimmered. "The journey alone brightens our being and changes the Universe. We finish the earth journey in a way, by growing into it, like a crab that grows into its shell, and then one day outgrows it and leaves. In that same way, we can experiment with energy, manifest ideas, brighten curiosity, and come face to face with `what if.' When we free flow the experience of `what if,' we ride the river with open eyes, and shake off the conscious mind. Then wisdom rises from the deepest, purest part of us through impulses. Not the impulses that come from our facades, like, `I want to deck that guy for giving me a dirty look,' or `I want to hide in my room because my mommy yelled at me.' Wisdom comes from the deep within where dwells the inner sage that knows intrinsic significance of all. In tapping that vibration, words arise like, `I am worthy, so I will speak up for myself,' or `I am worthy, so I don't need to react to that insult.' Following these sagacious wisdoms that rise from one's self requires courage. The true leap of faith is to trust life--not a person, or doctrine, or a `way.' But Life itself."

I nodded. "Trust life, "I murmured, "just trust life."

"Following this flow is as riding the stream to the sea, deflecting public opinion and being an original." He stepped back from me as if preparing to leave. He gazed upon me almost paternally. "May your image become unnecessary. May your facades weaken. May you discover wisdom and joy, time and timelessness . . . through yourself. Who are you? You're nobody, and everybody." He took another step back. "Ain't--Life--Great!"

Suddenly I felt bone weary. All that work breaking free from Mud Lake had done me in.

"Rest," He said, "regenerate."

"If I sleep, will you be gone when I awaken?"

He nodded.

"Where are you going?"

"I will leave the Desert and go into the Quicksand." "The Quicksand?"

"The Quicksand leads to the Cave of Wounds. I have work to do."

"You can leave the Desert of Loneliness that easily?"

"I've learned." He smiled faintly. "You will too."

I looked at My Fool skeptically, still not quite trusting my ability to attain what I so badly wanted--wisdom and courage.

"Open your pack," He said.

I opened it, knowing He would give me another gem. I was excited to see what color it would be. He dropped an opaque blue-gray stone in my pack. It landed on my white silk scarf. What appeared opaque in the gem soon cleared. The blue-gray that at first seemed rustic and ugly had become see-through crystalline beauty with light blue hints in the shine of it. Then it turned bright crystal clear blue, reminding me of clear sky.

He said, "This is the Gem of Independence, first experienced as loneliness. Beyond loneliness lies your essence. Beyond your essence is all essence . . . Pure Creative Energy. Loneliness fades. Freedom is found and the boundless open sky is there to explore."

"Thank you," I said, closing my pack. "I will change the gray of loneliness to the beauty of independence and freedom by seeking quintessence."

My loneliness grew and grew and grew, mounting into a ferocious windstorm that whipped sand crystals into my eyes, teeth, and hair, and grated painfully against my skin. I huddled in a ball on hands and knees, feeling my hair frenzy into tangled knots.

I cried to the universe, "See me, hear me, know me!" I wanted to be real in this world, but it seemed no one could touch the true me. I felt unreal. I felt like a speck of dust, inconsequential to the whole of life. I'd left the herd of society where conformity bought company, and institutions offered safety. I had strayed to find my independence. And this was the price I paid. I was in a black, dark, and lonely place. This independence, this independence--oh the price was high! Gaining independence required treading no known path. Trekking the unknown. That was the risk. `Live the mystery,' My Fool had said, but I was afraid.

I covered my ears to block the howling sound, but I couldn't block the beating gush of wind upon my body. I was so exposed. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. No shelter for me now. The Old World was not an option. The New World seemed out of reach. I started to cry, feeling abandoned, even by myself. Where was my divinity? Where was my sage in the great within? I was so lonely.

A book with many hidden treasures!

Some definitons: Sage: A mentor in spiritual and philosophical topics who is known for profound wisdom. Facade: An artificial or deceptive front. MetaPhysical: Meta means beyond and so MetaPhysical means beyond the physical reality. The fool on the hill: Well, I'm not positive but I feel this is the part of us that takes risks, that embraces change, that drops all facades. It seems that the Sage and The Fool on the hill reside within us. When we find our Sage, only then can we obtain answers and
direction for our lives.

Here is some Analysis without the Paralysis: This book has several hidden treasures that have inspired me to look deeper into myself to find answers I know cannot be found in the external world. In particular, there is a discussion regarding relationships. "The best relationships are those involving two people who have great relationships with themselves." As I am entering a new relationship at this time, this one sentense speaks volumes to me. To me, this means my best shot at a long, healthy relationship is to first be content and at peace with myself. This is not the type of book that you just scan and then move on. It requires a bit of introspection on your part. I really had to stop and think about how her words apply to my life. Another example: "What happens to you is less significent then what you do with what happens to you." This is profound and far reaching. To me, it means life comes at you but we still have control over how we react and thus control over our lives. How many times in my life I wish I had reacted differently to what "came at me".

This writer, I feel, has a special talent, and I'm particularly impressed with her experience as a counseler. I have found literally dozens of wisdoms, throughout this book, that have made me think about my life and how I can improve it, embrace change and keep growing.

A Gem of a Story

Susan Kalior has given us a wonderful story. She takes us on a journey through love and life, deep inside an unseen world within the mind. Imagine, if you would, a story in the tradition of Castaneda with the addition of unbridled emotion and feelings. Throughout the story I found myself pausing for a while to meditate on the insights that were expressed so well.

The Unknown Dubois

W.E.B Dubois is most famous for being one of the founders of the N.A.A.C.P and for his critique of Booker T. Washington's Atlanta Compromise speech in his now famous The Souls of Black Folk which is required reading at most Black Studies Departments at universities throughout the United States in fact a typical United States History program may have you read it as well;however, DuBois book the Negro for which this review is about seems to be less popular and I find that many people have not read it and the historians who mention it rarely talk about it in detail, essentially the book gives a history of African people in Africa,America,and the Caribbean and talks about their accomplishments and struggles from ancient(5000B.C) to modern times(1915). After reading this book I now know why many programs rarely use this book I can't help but believe it is because the book is very Afrocentric in its structure.....I was shocked to find out that when it came to the history of ancient Africa Dubois has more in common with the afrocentrist Molefi Asante than many may realize and less in common with the more popular scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.(regardless of whether he is a part of the W.E.B Dubois Department at Harvard) I saw Henry Louis Gates PBS documentary Wonders of the African World maybe about five years ago and I remember how skeptical he was about connecting Ancient Egypt to the rest of sub-saharan Africa......DuBois is not shy at all when he states that Egypt is indeed a part of Africa and that the people who founded Egypt were Negro(this was the word used at the time the book was written)Dubois was more radical than people realize he was one of the founders of Pan-African Congress I believe there were five in all, he would eventually leave the N.A.A.C.P abandon the idea of integration, become a socialist(The F.B.I had a file on him), move back to Africa and die in Ghana.....in fact Dubois would have more in common with his enemy Marcus Garvey(Dubois in his early career would criticize Garvey for his back to Africa movement)than he would realize. Its a great read for anyone interested in this African-American intellectual giant it may change your perspective on the man you think you know, but it should make you find him even more interesting. I will warn you that the book is dated it was written in 1915 so some of his theories are proven wrong, one example would be that Dubois at the time thought that man originated in the Middle East, thanks to the archaeological and DNA record we now know that man originated in Africa, but enjoy this book and may it increase our understanding of this great man

Often hard to read

This is often hard to read, not only because it's old and written in a rather long, drawn out style that was once used, but because of the content. I'm sure when it was written, this was seen as "pro-negro", but reading it from a modern perspective sometimes makes you cringe in areas. That said, however, I think it's important to see and understand history as it is, and this is part of that, so it has been interesting, though sometimes it gets a bit dull or uncomfortable for me.

A must read, even if you have to read it again and again

This book took me on a deep journey. Granted it may take most more than giving it a once over, but if you spend the time and effort to really get to know the book, and research exactly what the author is saying it is well worth the time that you took to understand it. A great read, and will challenge even the most agile mind.

About the Author
David Stansfield is an Arabic scholar, who has lived in many parts of the Middle East with different Arab families. He graduated from Durham University with First Class Honors (summa cum laude) in Arabic Studies, and continued studying the language and the culture at the universities of Cambridge, Paris and Toronto, whereupon he was recruited by MI6, the British equivalent of the CIA. David later went on to write and produce the 14-part TVOntario/Encyclopedia Britannica television series: “The Middle East,” which was selected for consideration for an Academy Award in the best educational documentary category. In addition, he wrote and produced over 400 television scripts (documentary, drama, comedy, animation) on many different subjects for TVOntario in Canada (both in English and French), NHK in Japan, and the Public Broadcasting Service, the Discovery Channel, and Time-Life in the U.S. This is his eleventh book. His other titles are: Origins: A History of Canada, One Last Great Wickedness, The Seventh Coming, The Man Who Murdered Time, Tale Nothing For Granted, Blood, Got a Couple of Minutes?, Attack at Noon, Highway Robbery and A Season of Monsters.

Andy Hira is a Professor of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and a Master’s degree in International Relations from George Washington University. He completed a Ph.D. in Political Science from Claremont Graduate University in 1997. His work has examined economic competitiveness strategies for a variety of nations, regions, and industries; energy policies; and innovation policies. In studying what creates success, Hira began to develop unconventional theories about human behaviour. A more recent, much abbreviated version of the financial crisis chapter of this book was published in the Review of European Economic Policy. He lives in Burnaby, Canada.

This is a five start book. Anyone interested in public policy and forecasting should read this book. Andy Hira does an excellent job by explaining how the irrationality of human behavior can lead to collective tragedies. As a researcher of the rise of populism in Latin America, I find Hira's theory very appealing. Hira uses an inter-disciplinary approach, drawing from economics to neuroscience, to show the complexity of the decision-making process.

Andy Hira does a great job exploring the link between psychology and international relations. He believes that Middle Eastern conflicts could not be explained only by the economic self interests of the parties involved. Instead, irrational group behaviors shape the outcomes of these crises. Without looking toward the emotional and tribal features of the conflicts, it is more difficult to form strategies to address these problems. He believes that the conflict between capitalism and communism shows different political viewpoints that are influenced by irrational tendencies of ideology. He believes that the financial crisis and the war in Iraq both show how emotions exacerbate and increases the severity of these problems.

The book begins with some of the linchpins that cause emotional and irrational behaviors. He begins with explaining how evolutionary roots affects human behavior. He then looks at the linkage between emotions and their effect on human behavior. He continues by explaining how selfish interests influence politics. The three case studies include 9/11, the financial crisis of 2008 and climate change. Each of these have deep roots that cannot be addressed with the rational self interest model of economists.

The book is eclectic and draws on psychology, human evolution, popular media sources to paint a picture of human relations that do not fit with the economic model. These crises have deeper roots than this, and group behavior and ideology each play a role.

I heartily recommend this book because it takes such a wide view of political action and explores what dwells beneath the surface of human behavior. I hope everyone has an opportunity to explore this journey Mr. Hira takes us through in his book.

" It may appear to be an easy question to answer

Professor Tom Boyd caught a ride in the back of a plumbers' pickup, falls out the back end, and lands in paradise. Paradise, in this case, is the Pecos Wilderness, where mind meets nature, and nature challenges the mind. A religious philosopher's dream becomes ours. The plumber, who backpacks with him, keeps him grounded, much as Chris, the young son in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, does for his philosophical father. Perhaps, in the plumber's words the primary question becomes, "Why the hell are we religious?" It may appear to be an easy question to answer, but if one wants to go beyond simple platitudes, this the book to read. Whether one is religious or not, whether one claims to be spiritual or secular, this stirs the pot, and makes you think about the question for yourself, and certainly, about the vast differences and varieties of beliefs and faiths. Yet again, as the plumber might ask, "Why bother?" Although it is a dimension of life many want to avoid, Dr. Boyd's lucid wisdom remains us whether it is some event, some memory, or some challenging experience in our life, the question is going to confront us.

Much like in "Zen," one finds yourself joining the ride, but in this case, the hike (a wild one). I was just going to read this book as a pleasure trip, but halfway through, I started over and began underlining like crazy. Again, in similar fashion to Zen, there is just enough light humor blended along with the heavy questions and stories, perhaps symbolized by the heavy backpacks. A major question becomes, "Does the religious or spiritual sense we sometimes feel or experience, whether it be rational or intuitive, which the author calls our 'religious sensibility,' add to our quality of life or not?" Without directly answering that question, Dr. Boyd has the power of bring forth brilliant discussions that illuminate how in our own spiritual odysseys, our lusting for infinity could be deepen by better understanding why and how we might choose to do so. Dr. Boyd, much in the tradition of Robert Pirsig, engages us, and leads, as did Pirsig, on a path to inspect our "quality" of life, interestingly, adding the awareness of religions without necessarily being religious. If you were one of the millions who read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, this too will become a must and enjoyable read.

Great book for the searching soul.

Boyd’s book is perfect for those of us who have lost or severely damaged the faith we grew up with but still have a voice inside that demands us to a spiritual awareness. Writing this Odyssey from the perspective of a well-qualified, but benevolent mentor is exceeding appealing. Writing it in present tense with no endpoint in sight helped me stay constantly “plugged in” to every page, enjoying the adventure.
Boyd gives us a new vocabulary to speak of faith and religion; words that haven’t had their meanings diluted by centuries of overuse.
He speaks in a tone of benevolence toward all religions, a concept, I think, critical to the future existence of our World. We need much more of this writing by professionals, like Boyd, who speak without pontificating.
I first ordered the Kindle edition, but realized I would be wanting to revisit many passages repeatedly, so then bought the paperback and am underlining meaningful passages as I go, and I’m using a great deal of ink doing so.
After reading the book, I came to this personal understanding, “Our deepest feelings are beyond words. This is particularly true in relating to God. However, we still have a need to speak of these primal thoughts, regardless of the inadequacy of what we say.
Our religion is the result of this need. Our problems arise when we forget the inadequacy and take our efforts literally instead of metaphorically.
I can still enter enthusiastically into a public worship as long as I don’t demand, of myself, a literal interpretation of what is going on there. It has been a great relief to me.

High country, big questions

This one is for all those Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance fans and folks fond of the back country, tales of pilgrimage, or long, pensive walks with friends during which talk turns to big questions, like What is the origin of religion? or Why are we religious? Does religion still matter? I have to recommend Tom W. Boyd's (Uncle Tom, to me) just-out memoir/meditation on the meaning of life, Lusting for Infinity. Read it and be reminded of how to follow a question till it leads you through thickets of heart and mind to new places of clarity, and new questions. I put the book down this weekend at last and felt like I had spent the week in the wilderness with my philosophizing uncle pondering the Great Mystery. Go there. It's a journey worth making.
