Battlefield America: The War on the American People, by John W. Whitehead

In Battlefield America: The War on the American People, the follow-up to his award-winning book A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead paints a terrifying portrait of a nation at war with itself and which is on the verge of undermining the basic freedoms guaranteed to the citizenry in the Constitution. Indeed, police have been transformed into extensions of the military, towns and cities have become battlefields, and the American people have been turned into enemy combatants, to be spied on, tracked, scanned, frisked, searched, subjected to all manner of intrusions, intimidated, invaded, raided, manhandled, censored, silenced, shot at, locked up, and denied due process.

Yet this police state did not come about overnight. As Whitehead notes, this shift into totalitarianism cannot be traced back to a single individual or event. Rather, the evolution has been so subtle that most American citizens were hardly even aware of it taking place. Yet little by little, police authority expanded, one weapon after another was added to the police arsenal, and one exception after another was made to the standards that have historically restrained police authority. Add to this mix the merger of Internet megacorporations with government intelligence agencies, and you have the making of an electronic concentration camp that not only sees the citizenry as databits but will attempt to control every aspect of their lives. And if someone dares to step out of line, they will most likely find an armed SWAT team at their door.

WELL WRITTEN, RESEARCHED AND EXTREMELY POIGNANT
By Robert Steven Thomas
"While many flail at the branches of evil ... few strike at the root."
In this compelling sequel from where his 2013 book "A Government of Wolves" left off ... Mr. Whitehead now whacks directly at the tap-root! These books are each a timely accounting of the exponentially escalating attacks on American civil rights, liberties and freedoms that have been steadily and frighteningly increasing over the last half-century. From his exhaustive research and personal experience the author has added fresh new incite and additional perspective to his main premise - "Too many individual constitutional rights and freedoms are being trampled on and dangerously eliminated by government in the name of escalating societal presure." While it remains for each individual reader to determine the degree, impact and precise steps required to overcome these injustices; after reading this important book you will be much better informed on both the nature of the problems and potential remedies.

Eye opening book. It Floored me.
By heraldo
I bought this book after hearing the author describe some rather disturbing things going on in our system today. I am a person of facts, I like to know that what I am saying holds truth. So I research and come to a conclusion based on the facts of the matter. This book lays out in detail the diatribe actions that government agencies are taking against individual Americans like you and me. While I personally have never experienced these things, that 30 years ago were unheard of, it is important to look at the direction these agencies are heading. I would encourage you to give this book a read and find out what is going on around us.

We don't have to agree on politics, but we should be able to agree on the principle that we have individual liberty to make decisions for ourselves.

WOW!

I originally was not sure what this book was about. But I then saw a few reviews from people I respect saying what a great book it is. They were right!!! This book covers so many aspects of what America is becoming and why. Primary of these is that America is become a militarized police state created by the Federal Government by giving/granting money and military equipment to local police departments. The local police in turn feel a need to use the equipment provided and oftentimes does so in direct violation of the U. S. Constitution. Unfortunately the courts have supported this mis-use through its decisions supporting the police. This does not mean local police are not to be supported and protected but local police should always follow the Constitution thus guaranteeing our individual rights and freedoms which you have to admit are eroding in favor of protection from terrorism. Also very well explained and defined is the move towards constant surveillance no matter where you go and what you do. The government has the ability and uses it when they are able to track our every movement, listen to our every conversation over a cell phone, even turn our cell phones on and off without our permission. It has also formed alliances with corporations to track what we buy and why. In fact there is nothing that our own government who is suppose to be working for us and protecting our privacy and freedoms can spy on - nothing. The question becomes what are we as a nation going to do about it. For the most part - apparently nothing as everyone goes about his or business without a concern in the world - WRONG ANSWER! I dare say that the government is monitoring this post as it is unfavorable to the government. More importantly, with every such post the government has more and more reason to mistrust me and put me like you on watchlists and then use those lists to advance their position whenever the need should arise. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK TO MAKE YOU THINK AND MAKE YOU MORE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND WHAT YOU DO. Whenever you think when you otherwise may not have, it is a very good thing.

Man's Greatest Gift - Time
How strange that man has always felt such a strong akinship to magic powers that many have sought through strange rites and magic words to reveal all the secrets of nature and the answers to human problems. There is such a power, but it is not revealed through incantations, nor mystery; it is the basic key to science, time, space, economics, health, balance of mind, and to every conceivable thing, including human nature and destiny. This profound power is not unknown, although it is misunderstood in its entirety. It is the power to analyze, theorize, weigh, measure, and deduce, to arrive at definite and logical conclusions. Of such is the Power of the Word and the Divine Principle of Mathematics working through the Cyclic Law, which reveals the quality and unfoldment of the human mind through time.

Time represents the unfoldment of the evolutionary forces of nature working in the finite plane of existence through our calendar principle of seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, and throughout the ages; it is based upon the movement of the earth around the sun. When man fully realizes that numbers are symbols of Divine Intelligence as well as being mathematical gradations, that they have quality as well as quantity, he will realize the relationship of season to time. A plant grows according to time and season, which are predetermined. Thus is God discernible through his own laws, governing the growth and unfoldment of all life upon the earth.

Perhaps, you as a businessman have been dreaming of the key that would reveal the nature and trends of our economic cycles. We are told: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven," (Ecclesiastes 3:1), the secret being to find the nature and experiences relative to time, so that it might be revealed in a practical way.

It is only logical to assume that the reason and plan of being is contained within being itself, and it is man's duty to become the interpreter. There is a magic key to the growth and unfoldment of human mind, as well as to that of all existence, such as the nature of the ages. This magic key is the Cyclic Law that reveals the relationship of economic and natural conditions to the divine measuring stick, mathematics, as the contents of this book will reveal.

Yours in service,
Alfred J. Parker

This book explains why one year may be fantastic and the next filled with problems and heartache
By Carllie Hennigan
This book explains why one year may be fantastic and the next filled with problems and heartache; why I have a lot of energy and determination on one day and then a few days later I feel like a balloon that's been punctured! I guess cycles apply to everything else--wind, waves, sun, planets, migrations--why can't they apply to human mind? The writer has done a very thorough investigation into cycles applied to human mind and life, and his understanding is very helpful and encouraging--provides hope!

Understanding cycle influences...
By CL
What's revealed in this book is how laws of mathematics influences everything around us, our business, people's environment, and even different portions of a day have its own subtle influence. Awareness is key to working effectively with the cyclic laws of mathematics. Have you ever noticed how some buildings require the same kind of repairs... compared to other places? It's one example of how revealing numbers are in its influence.

Either a Clinton or a Bush has been in the White House for nearly half, or twenty years, of our precipitous decline. Both seek the office again. This book offers an alternative, a fresh approach to the same land Lincoln referred to when he passionately argued for "our last, best hope".

Makes sense on all levels. I'm old enough to remember when were the first to reach the moon. I thought, with great pride and confidence, that the USA was on the right track. I don't feel that way now. what happened? Read this book, not only does it point out problems but tries to solve them

George Yeo on Bonsai, Banyan and the Tao, by Asad-ul Iqbal Latif, Huay Leng Lee

Since his undergraduate days in Cambridge, George Yeo has spoken and written much in and out of government. Many remember the things which he said or wrote years ago. This book is a compilation of some of his best speeches and writings which were selected by Asad Latif and Lee Huay Leng in consultation with him.

The book has a rather unusual title because there are many aspects to George Yeo which makes him difficult to classify. As a student leader, he was radical but conciliatory. In the Singapore Armed Forces, he was atypical, moving from the Army to the Air Force before becoming Director of Joint Operations and Planning. In politics, he is fondly remembered by artists, journalists, doctors, businessmen and foreign diplomats, and by his colleagues and constituents. His own staff said he had a curious mind. They complained that he rarely used the drafts which they had prepared for him.

George Yeo describes himself as a Taoist even though he is a Roman Catholic and is now on the Papal staff. Buddhists are surprised he championed the revival of Nalanda University as an international project. He remains close to Singaporeans of different races and religions even though he has a deep sense of his own ancestral roots and religion. In politics, he has been described both as a liberal and a conservative. In his Parliamentary maiden speech, he spoke of the importance of democracy but has repeated many times that democracy is only a means and not an end in itself. He has a deep interest in history which partly explains his seeing the re-emergence of China and India earlier than most others.

The bonsai and the banyan are metaphors he uses for Singapore. Singapore is a city-state and must never have an inflated view of itself. The bonsai describes Singapore modestly, but he adds that the bonsai can be intensely interesting and valuable. The banyan provides shade and we are grateful for it, but too much makes us weak. As for the Tao, that perhaps is what gives unity to his many interests.

Readership: The general public, policy-makers and academics keen on Asian politics and international relations.

Review
"This is a wonderful book by one of the foremost statesmen and social thinkers of our time. Though the themes covered display a huge variety in this wide-ranging collection of essays and speeches by George Yeo, there is a foundational interest in Asia's vast possibilities that motivates his illuminating and powerful reflections." -- Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate in Economics

"Every reader will take away something from the collection … I thought I knew what made me personally appreciate him as a political figure. The fuller picture revealed in his speeches shows us someone who is searching deeply and widely for answers to the human condition. This is someone we should all want to know better." -- Professor Wang Gungwu, Chairman of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and East Asian Institute

"As can be seen in this splendid collection of speeches and commentaries, George Yeo's knowledge is wide-ranging as well. He can speak informatively about everything from the arrival and impact of the Internet in traditional societies to the role of city-regions in a globalized world to the woes and wonders of multi-ethnic and multi-religious polities. The reader will be well-rewarded by delving into this rich depository of insights and ideas." -- Nicolas Berggruen, Chairman of the Berggruen Institute and Berggruen Holdings

"This thick tome by George Yeo may help you pass your General Paper exams. His views can be unconventional and unexpected. For some, this book could be a collection of quotable quotes. For others, hopefully a challenge to rise and make Singapore a great home for us all." -- Mothership.sg, Singaporean digital news agency

From the Inside Flap
George Yeo's 1991 speech on pruning the banyan tree of the Singapore state, a political canopy under which nothing could grow, heralded an era of activism by civil society, which had hitherto been seen as a threat to the dominance of the PAP state.

The ministerial speeches by Yeo an indefatigable writer are distinguished by his deep and clear thinking about the place of democracy in good governance. Yeo is what may be called a liberal conservative. An iconic product of Singapore's meritocratic but authoritarian system, he was a political conservative, believing in the need for discipline and stability above all in a city-state without the margin for error due to a lack of natural resources. Nevertheless, he was far-sighted enough to recognise that order and stability could survive only if the system were liberalised judiciously from within so as to attract and retain the idealism and energy of a younger and liberal citizenry.

A thinker and strategist, Yeo led the Singapore team which negotiated Free Trade Agreements with the United States, Japan, Australia and other countries. Controversially, he proposed the idea of having Integrated Resorts, including casinos, in Singapore, although his late father had had a problem with gambling. A true-blue Singapore pragmatist, he believes that policy-making often involves a choice between evils.

This book is a compilation of speeches selected from the entire range of what Yeo penned and delivered throughout his political life, covering from domestic issues, which have not lost their resonance today, to international realities in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and the United States within which Singapore will have to survive and thrive.

Great perspective on Southeast Asia
By "Castro" Bob
This book offers outstanding perspective on Southeast Asia. The author was a leading government and political official in Singapore for many years; educated in the UK and US; has met a lot of world leaders; and has great insights on the region and somewhat of a global perspective. The book offers mainly the type of analysis one would expect from a publication like the Economist but is also leavened with fascinating personal anecdotes, philosophical observations, strategic thinking, and some "Confucian" parables.

The format is a series of highly-readable essays, some recent and others dating back twenty years. While I favored the more recent essays, it is interesting to read back to get a sense of how Southeast Asia has evolved. It is also interesting to see how a country which once controlled information so tightly has learned to embrace social media

Deadly Baggage: What Cortes Brought to Mexico and How It Destroyed the Aztec Civilization, by Al Sandine

In 1519, a few hundred Europeans led by Hernan Cortes sailed from Cuba to the Mexican mainland, where they encountered representatives of the Aztec Empire. Their Iberian history, culture and religion, and their experience in the Greater Antilles made conquest and riches the aim of these adventurers. They regarded themselves as heroes in a romantic crusade of good against evil. Each member of the expedition sought to acquire precious metals and to become a lord of enslaved native labor. Their horses and steel swords, aided by native disunity and susceptibility to Old World diseases, ensured their success.

This analysis of the conquest of Mexico stands in contrast to previous narratives that either reduce the conquest to a contest between Cortes and Montezuma, or describe a near miraculous victory of European ingenuity and Western values over Indian superstition and savagery. The author re-frames the clash of civilizations in New World prehistory that left inhabitants at a disadvantage.

Excellent Combination of Wide-ranging Research and Insightful Discussion
By Isaiah Smithson
I have read both of Al Sandine’s earlier books--Plundertown USA (2003) and The Taming of the American Crowd (2009)--and I enjoyed, admired, and learned from both of them. However, I think Deadly Baggage is his finest (so far). The research is far-ranging and meticulous, and the interweaving of material from these primary and secondary sources into Sandine’s own insightful theses and comments is done gracefully. The discussion is consistently well organized and nicely phrased. Most impressive, I think, is the book’s ability to branch out in quite different directions, yet still move the reader smoothly back to the trunk (to strain a metaphor). Discussions of seemingly disparate topics such as diffusionist vs inventionist theories of cultural evolution, the Crusades of the Late Middle Ages, the cross and sword as interdependent Christian symbols and tools, the relationship between the European aristocratic work ethic and New World slavery, and theories as to why Western Europe’s “great divergence” occurred are shown to be intimately related. And they always blend black into the book’s principal concern: the secular and religious identity stories 15th and 16th century Europeans told themselves about themselves, self-aggrandizing narratives that had worn thin over the centuries in Europe but that found energetic, new life as the Europeans blundered destructively into the New World.

I agree with Dr. Smithson. This is a very readable and interesting book, and a much more thoughtful and in-depth analysis of this history than the familiar Eurocentric view.

“Our modern society is based on greed, envy and power. When you consider all this as it actually is, this overpowering commercialism indicates degeneration and basic immorality. We are destroying the earth and all the things on it for our gratification.

To radically change this pattern of our life, which is the basis of all society, is the educator’s responsibility.”

Written over a period of fifteen years, Krishnamurti’s letters to his schools contain the essence of his teachings.

Krishnamurti aims at making the reader understand the way he thinks, how all of us are influenced, moulded to conform to a pattern and free him from the limitations of his mind.

Education is to unfold the full human potential.

About the Author
Jiddu Krishnamurti was born on 11 May 1895 in Madanapalle, a small town in south India. He and his brother were adopted in their youth by Dr Annie Besant, then president of the Theosophical Society. Dr Besant and others proclaimed that Krishnamurti was to be a world teacher whose coming the Theosophists had predicted. To prepare the world for this coming, a world-wide organization called the Order of the Star in the East was formed and the young Krishnamurti was made its head. In 1929, however, Krishnamurti renounced the role that he was expected to play, dissolved the Order with its huge following, and returned all the money and property that had been donated for this work. From then, for nearly sixty years until his death on 17 February 1986, he travelled throughout the world talking to large audiences and to individuals about the need for a radical change in mankind.

Very good access to Krishnamurti's thoughts
By Olassozeit
This book contains three sets of letters Krisnamurti wrote to his schools between 1968 and 1983. It addresses not only teachers and students but anyone interested in his teachings.
The letters are just 2 to 4 pages long and dedicated to a single issue each. For me this book was a very good access to Krishnamurti's thoughts: comparable to "Freedom from the Known" but a bit more concrete.
It is a book on personal development as that is what he means with learning.

About the Author

Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was a celebrated artist, author, and teacher -- and a primary figure in the history of children's literature. Not only did he guide and inspire such artistic talents as N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Jessie Willcox Smith, but he was also a master storyteller in his own right. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Pepper & Salt, and The Wonder Clock are among the many stories and folktales that he wrote and illustrated.

This is the version worth waiting for . . .
By Allen Smalling
Although Howard Pyle was born in Delaware, he is best known as purveyor of myth and legend to several generation of British and American children -- and their parents.

Published in 1902, THE STORY OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS (Unabridged) is probably the most comprehensive of the Arthurian legends available in one volume--certainly the most comprehensive for kids. We follow Arthur during his "Sword in the Stone" period, then on to adulthood with a nod at the romantic complications that the play/movie "Camelot" focused on, then later an older Arthur and his followers articulate the legend of the grail (spoofed by Monty Python and reverently presented by a score of other writers).

Although 1902 was just past the end of the "Decadent" movement in English arts and literature, this volume displays no cloying irony or clever design a la Aubrey Beardsley. It was, after all, meant for children, although very small children should have it read to them by an understanding sibling or adult. In fact, what I appreciate most about it is its full-body quality that appeals to me as an adult just as it did as a child.

Is calling this tome "unabridged" a mere marketing ploy? Fortunately not. So many kids' books -- this one included -- have been abridged, then dumbed down, and frequently illustated so profusely that they come across more as a kind of black-and-white Classics Comic than the real thing. And rarely does the book jacket or publishing page admit as much! Of course, I'm not totally averse to abridging a long and challenging work for the sake of the children, and there have been a couple of intelligent shortenings of Pyle's work. But the publishers of this book wisely chose to indicate it is unabridged -- a novel exception these days and a happy one. When we're dealing with cultural history and myth this seminal, it's best not to gloss over the details and the nuances of interpersonal relations that give the Arthurian legend such "oomph" even today.

A note on the quality of the physical book itself: it is extraordinary, really about halfway in workmanship between an ordinary hardbound book meant to mass readership and the much more expensive Folio Society type of book with its art papers and commissioned drawings. THE STORY OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS (Unabridged) has smoothly-trimmed pages, beginning to be a rarity in this age of sloppy, pseudo-deckle cuts. The type font is accessible and attractive and there's enough room to make reading it a pleasure but not so much that it screams "Kid stuff." The spine is bound in quarter-round buckram, not synthetic fabric or cardboard. There's even a ribbon marker included. At this price, I doubt any publisher using USA presses could make much of a profit; this version was printed in China. (There are some people who object to buying/receiving made-in-Mainland-China goods, so the potential gift-giver might think about that beforehand.) But for the money -- and even for more money -- you'll never get this kind of quality, both literary and physical. Highly recommended.

Exciting Adventures suited for reading aloud: 9-12 yr old
By A Customer
This book transports the older child into a world of magic, knights and ladies. The main focus is King Arthur, but also features Merlin, and some of King Arthurs Knights. This book provides an excellent opportunity to expand an older childs vocabulary as the author has clearly researched and included elements from King Arthurs time. I read this book aloud to my ten year old daughter and sometimes my wife and we all loved the spirit and adventure. Be aware that this book is not "politically correct" (written in 1903!). There are some really wicked women that torment King Arthur and his knights, and the knights themselves are not always "shining" to todays standards. I am now ordering the next in the series to continue with the adventure!

This doth be an exceedingly good book!
By Jesse Rouse
Howard Pyle delivers yet another splendid book which recaptures the enchantment and chivalry of the legend of Kind Arthur and his knights. Some have complained of the archaic english, but I love it. It only adds to the magic of Pyle's story. This book is filled with the adventures of noble knights, and it does an amazing job of keeping your interest. Somehow, even after many previous jousts and sword matches, Pyle makes each one more interesting than the last.

I also love the "moral of the story" section he does at the end of most major book divisions. He did not do that in the other Pyle book I have read (The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood), and I very much liked them. In such he made allegories of Excalibur and its sheath (to God's Truth and faith), and does likewise with many things, always wishing to teach to us some truth through his writings about Arthur and his knights. I also loved the oath of the knights of the Round Table:

"And this was the covenant of their Knighthood of the Round Table: That they would be gentle unto the weak; that they would be courageous unto the strong; that they would be terrible unto the wicked and the evil-doer that they would defend the helpless who should call upon them for aid; that all women should be held unto them sacred; that they would stand unto the defence of one another whensoever such defence should be required; that they would be merciful unto all men; that they would be gentle of deed, true in friendship, and faithful in love. This was their covenant, and unto it each knight sware upon the cross of his sword, and in witness thereof did kiss the hilt thereof."

This except, I think, well sums up this book, in which these oaths are held, and if they are not, retribution always follows swiftly. In the land of Camelot, good deeds before God are of highest value, and wicked deeds are always subject to disapproval and punishment.

Why Hawks Become Doves: Shimon Peres and Foreign Policy Change in Israel, by Guy Ziv

Investigates how leaders’ personalities shape important foreign policy shifts.

Why do hawkish leaders change course to pursue dovish policies? In Why Hawks Become Doves, Guy Ziv argues that conventional international relations theory is inadequate for explaining these momentous foreign policy shifts, because it underestimates the importance of leaders and their personalities. Applying insights from cognitive psychology, Ziv argues that decision-makers’ cognitive structure—specifically, their levels of cognitive openness and complexity—is a critical causal variable in determining their propensity to revise their beliefs and pursue new policies. To illustrate his point, he examines Israeli statesman Shimon Peres. Beginning his political career as a tough-minded security hawk, Peres emerged as one of the Middle East’s foremost champions of Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. Drawing on a vast range of sources, including interviews with Peres and dozens of other political elites, archival research, biographies, and memoirs, Ziv finds that Peres’s highly open and complex cognitive structure facilitated a quicker and more profound dovish shift on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict than his less cognitively open and complex rivals.

“Guy Ziv has written a masterful and intriguing study that breaks new ground in demonstrating the importance of the individual leader in framing foreign policy. The comparisons of Peres, Rabin, Begin, and Shamir are extraordinary, and effectively demonstrate the advantages of a leader who has a talent for adapting to altered conditions and listening to differing perspectives. It’s both an absorbing page-turner and a stimulating eye-opener.” — Steven L. Spiegel, coauthor of The Peace Puzzle: America’s Quest for Arab-Israeli Peace, 1989–2011

“Ziv has written a fascinating account of how some leaders (Peres, Rabin, Sharon) are able to shift their goals and strategies to a less conflictual mode, and how others (Shamir, Begin, Netanyahu) are simply incapable of doing so. Ziv makes a strong case for the proposition that the cognitive structure of leaders matters. A turn towards peace requires national leaders who are personally capable of making that turn. Ziv’s tome is a substantial contribution to the literatures of foreign policy analysis and political psychology, and is an important read for all who seek a more peaceful world.” — Valerie M. Hudson, author of Foreign Policy Analysis: Classic and Contemporary Theory

This book is a welcome addition to my home library's growing Middle East section.
By Clay
Guy Ziv offers a powerful explanation for a phenomenon that has been widespread in Israel for many years: hardline political figures who have moderated their views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ziv argues that a leader's "cognitive structure" -- specifically, his/her levels of cognitive openness and complexity -- holds strong predictive power in whether a leader will change his or her views in light of changing circumstances. Although this is a scholarly book that is heavily footnoted, the prose is clean and almost basically free of jargon. It is highly accessible, therefore, to the lay person who wants to learn more about domestic Israeli politics, Israel's struggle for peace with its neighbors, and its relations with the Western world.

Ziv's main case study is Shimon Peres, a larger-than-life personality whom the author understands well. (The author interviewed Peres twice for this book.) We learn a lot about Peres' personality, his relationships with other figures, and his thinking on the major issues affecting "the conflict."

Ziv also has an interesting concluding chapter that features vignettes about other leaders including Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's current premier.

This book is a welcome addition to any home library's growing Middle East section.

This ought to be a must read for students of foreign policy and political psychology.
By Philip Bermel
This ought to be a must read for students of foreign policy and political psychology. Fascinating insight into how people respond to events that challenge their core beliefs. The author looks at Israeli leaders in particular but his findings could just as well be applicable to other world leaders. This is a book that really reinforces the idea that leaders matter, that big changes in the world can't be adequately explained without examining the people behind them.
