accurate analysis and prognostication

i'm writing this before reading the whole book but its a collection of articles so the different chapters are discrete units under a common theme of the economies of the arab world with a good deal on the economies of their oil producing GCC members.

reading this book more than twenty years after it was published is fascinating as so many of the issues and repercussions mentioned have either come true or held true and the state of the region has not improved considerably but even regressed in many cases.

consider the following excerpt from the book that i found interesting:

"the oil states today face tremendous challenges, as oil revenues start to decline. Few expected that the decline would come so soon. Everybody knew it would come, but it was expected later rather than sooner."

this is almost like seeing history repeat itself in real time.

My husband and I were waiting along Frenchmen St. in New Orleans, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary while waiting for our table to be readied whilst this young beautiful gentleman was sitting, watching the world go by and he caught our attention offering to read us a poem. We quickly were engaged and enthralled by his demeanor and words. He is deep, full of wisdom beyond his years and gifted with being able to express so much in his words. I was brought to tears with the connection I felt while he read some of the Heart of a Warrior to me. I was moved, when that is not an easy to thing to do. Upon separating ways - I asked for his info and suggested he make his stuff available, then he was able to tell me it was on line! I was so excited and I can't wait for more to be available. May you have safe journeys and hope always in your heart my dearest warrior.

Points to Ponder

If you want a quick read that includes poems with punch, this is the book for you. There were several that gave me pause to think and that is the power of a good poet, I.e., leaving you with that thought to ponder. One verse that was particularly compelling read "But on the world's last turns, I can only ask for one last turn to use my words and change the curve that we learn."

I look forward to the warrior poet's next installment.

Well-researched, Smooth Read

As an English teacher with just enough time in his life to read a few extra books on top of his normal reading, I am glad that I picked up this book. Far from "pop" history, Dockter's prose brings both the scholar and the writer here to make a well-researched, volume that explains the foundations of Islamic relations today. Dockter avoids making Churchill the larger-than-life character, a trap so many other authors fall into, and instead represents him as a man trying to reconcile the historical baggage of both European and Islamic society in the creation of the 20th century Middle East. Overall, it is a well-researched, smooth read that avoids the dryness of much scholarly work.

A fresh perspective on Churchill and the Middle East.

Let me start by saying that it's an almost impossible task to take any topic involving Winston Churchill and make it seem fresh and contemporaneously relevant to today's geopolitical environment; yet this is exactly what Dr. Dockter accomplishes with this book. Easy to read, yet meticulously researched, Dockter takes a nuanced approach to the topic. All too often, pundits and politicians usurp Churchill's words to support their own simplistic slant on Islam and the Middle East without ever delving into the context of Churchill's own changing perspectives and experiences with this multi-facited culture; however, this book takes this extraordinary man's experiences and thoughts on the Islamic world and shines an academic light on them in a way that has never been accomplished before. Highly Recommended.

The period of time from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century saw the Middle East and, what this book terms, the broader “Islamic world” drastically altered. Winston Churchill was often found near or at the center of these changes. This impeccably researched book exhaustively details Churchill’s interactions, warts and all, with the “Islamic world.” This book is an impressive work of scholarship and would be a fitting addition to any history lover’s library.

Ghassan Hage is a professor of anthropology and social theory at the University of Melbourne. R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. is the editor-in-chief at the American Spectator. Boy Clinton is his full-length diatribe against the current President of the United States of America. According to Tyrrell, Clinton is "so ambitious, so inexhaustible, so political, as to be a freak even by the standards of Arkansas" (take that, Arkansas) and has run "the most corrupt and incompetent presidency in American history" (and that, Richard Nixon). Clinton is not the only target of Tyrrell's wrath. Ross Perot is another "freak," and the John F. Tyrrell traces the formative influence on the young, fatherless Clinton of the hustlers and rogues who populated his boyhood hometown of Hot Springs (not Hope), Arkansas. Tyrrell shows how the influence-peddlers who dominated Arkansas politics served as Clinton's real political mentors and role models. And he explains how these factors combined with Clinton's '60s-era radicalism to create a new, more dangerous type of career politician. Tyrrell reports dozens of fresh revelations about both Bill and Hillary Clinton, and sheds important new light on their activities in Arkansas and Washington. He presents strong evidence, for instance, that Clinton knowingly benefited from the profits of a cocaine-smuggling ring operating out of an Arkansas airport. A Scathing, Snide attack on the Clintons

This is one of the weirdest books I've read in a long time. Written by R. Emmett Tyrrell of American Spectator fame, this has to be one of the most scathing attacks on Bill and Hillary Clinton ever written. I gave it five stars because it kept me in open mouthed awe throughout the entire read, as well as illiciting huge belly laughs over some of Tyrrell's word play, which can be truly brilliant. This book isn't a knee to the Clinton groin, it's a shotgun blast to the Clinton groin.
The book starts out with the L.D. Brown story. Brown was a close confidant of Clinton when he was Governor Clinton of Arkansas. Brown, with Clinton's help, attained a job with the CIA. Brown quickly became entangled in the Barry Seal/Mena drug trafficking operation. Brown is an important figure because he can link Clinton into the drug operations. This part of the book is essentially the same account that can be found in Ambrose Evans-Pritchard's "The Secret Life of Bill Clinton". If Brown is to be believed, this is a devastating indictment of Bill Clinton and sets the tone for Tyrrell's examination of the Clintons.
The rest of the book traces Bill's ascension to the White House. We get an account of Bill and his education at Oxford and Yale, where he quickly hooked up with what Tyrrell calls the "Coat and Tie Radicals", which are those New Left hippies that smoked dope and engaged in Marxist thought on the weekends, but spent the rest of their time carefully cultivating their public image so as to land good positions in government, law and corporate America. Tyrrell shows that during the time between the 1960's and the 1990's, these Commies never changed their attitudes or beliefs. They simply waited through the Reagan years for their chance to impose their warped values on America. Their beliefs can be summed up in what Tyrrell calls the "kultursmog", a choking mess of touchy-feely and Marxist/Socialist ideas that clouds traditional American values. Tyrrell continues his assault on the Clintons by showing their financial scams, their rabid pursuit of power over everything else, how they are products of the corrupt "Ole Boy" network of Arkansas politics, and how the first year of the Clinton presidency, 1993, was an utter disaster for America. Tyrrell outlines all of the scandals and flubs that made the Clinton presidency the most corrupt and inept administration in American history. Tyrrell also looks at Clinton's childhood, throwing aspersions on Clinton's mother Virginia, who is portrayed as a loose woman without any morals. He also points out that we can't be sure who Clinton's father really is.
A separate chapter offers a treatment of Hillary Clinton and reveals the true colors of our illustrious First Lady. She is exposed as a closet Communist who clerked for a well known Marxist lawyer who defended the Black Panther Party. Hillary also edited a journal at Yale that was extremely hostile to authority figures. One edition depicted police officers as racist pigs who should be killed. Hillary's infamous behavior is also closely detailed. Apparently, our First Lady has a temper problem, and likes to heave objects in fits of volcanic anger.
Tyrrell explodes the Clinton mythos and shows them to be two black holes in power suits. The portrait painted here reveals them to be grasping, petty, manipulative power seekers without a shred of decency. They dragged America through the mud, and the country will forever be stained by the Clinton legacy. And this was written in 1996, well before the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke.
It's important to note that Tyrrell uses an astounding vocabulary throughout the book. Words such as foozle, avuncular, and lumpen predominate. The style is also extremely snide and can get pretty ugly. Tyrrell pulls no punches in this treatise, and liberals will scream bloody murder while reading this, if they can finish it in the first place. It is, without a doubt, a polemic, and should be read accordingly. I have to give it five stars for its sheer audacity. I'll read it again.

SO MANY CRIMES IT IS ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE. EXCEPT THAT IT IS SO FACTUAL. In-depth Reporting that the Liberal News Media can't seem to be able to do. The author, R. Emmett Tyrrell uncovers Crimes and Indiscretions in Arkansas that would make most Americans cringe at the thought of this immoral, immature man in charge of anything!!

About the Author
Errico Malatesta (December 14, 1853 – July 22, 1932) was an Italian anarchist. He spent much of his life exiled from Italy and in total spent more than ten years in prison. Malatesta wrote and edited a number of radical newspapers and was also a friend of Mikhail Bakunin. He was an enormously popular figure in his time. Malatesta was a committed revolutionary: he believed that the anarchist revolution was coming soon, and that violence would be a necessary part of it since the state rested ultimately on violent coercion. As he wrote in his article "The Revolutionary 'Haste'": It is our aspiration and our aim that everyone should become socially conscious and effective; but to achieve this end, it is necessary to provide all with the means of life and for development, and it is therefore necessary to destroy with violence, since one cannot do otherwise, the violence which denies these means to the workers. Malatesta, then, advocated violence as a "necessary" part of the emancipation of the working class.

A little dated but still relevant.

This is a really interesting pamphlet on Anarchy. Its from the 1890's so it has some ideas that later got tested by the soviet union and china, and turned out to be less efficacious than desired. Still it makes very compelling arguments for an anarchist society, arguments which are still surprisingly true a hundred and twenty years later. Definitely a good read for anyone interested in the historical roots of anarchism, or someone who wants some good reasons why we should adopt an anarchist society. Though if you're looking for a more mechanistic view of how an anarchistic society should function, this pamphlet doesn't offer much in that regard, and much of what it does offer was proven not to work historically, so perhaps something a little more recent would be for you.

Anarchist Primer

This is a primer on the basic tenets of anarchism from the Italian best known for theorizing and practicing an anarchist lifestyle. It is a short read and decisively refutes the many misconceptions about anarchism, especially the idea that anarchy is chaos and disorder. I teach a course on the History of Anarchism and this book has informed my syllabus on a number of occasions. A more readable version with similar impact is Malatesta's "At the Cafe: Conversations on Anarchism". I recommend both to any reader who really wants to understand Anarchism.

1891 primer

I consulted Vernon Richards' translation of this 1891 primer. It offers a dogged defense of the anarchist policy as applied to a libertarian socialism, which Errico Malatesta regards as the natural ally of an anti-authoritarian system. The key argument is against imposed, top-down, coercive authority, not all methods by which people organize themselves and direct actions for the common good as well as individual fulfillment. "The basic function of government everywhere in all times whatever title it adopts and whatever its origin and organization may be, is always that of oppressing and exploiting the masses, of defending the oppressors and the exploiters; and its principle, characteristic and indispensable, instruments are the police agent and the tax-collector, the soldier and the jailer—to whom must be invariably added the trader in lies, be he priest or schoolmaster, remunerated or protected by the government to enslave minds and make them docilely accept the yoke." Strong words, typical of the prose in this pamphlet. If not by direct oppression physically, then by submission through the control of property and resources, we submit.

While Malatesta admits that governments do also look after some elements of welfare, security, utilities, and education, he suspects that the underlying reason is to cow the common people, and to make them better bear the yoke of the State and the wealthy, allied in power over all.

Against this, Malatesta promotes solidarity, as surely, he reasons, people in primitive times on saw even as they were brought under submission by those who took over as the elite, that coordination among people could also bring about common progress and congenial progress for the better. Yet, we are deceived if we trust the leaders who inherit such gains gotten unjustly by appropriation, conquest, and theft from the commonweal: "A government cannot maintain itself for long without hiding its true nature behind a pretence of general usefulness; it cannot impose respect for the lives of privileged people if it does not appear to demand respect for all human life; it cannot impose acceptance of the privileges of the few if it does not pretend to be the guardian of the rights of all." Malatesta argues that only overthrow of this system can free us.

Anarchy, he sums up, is this: "From the free participation of all, by means of the spontaneous grouping of men according to their requirements and their sympathies, from the bottom to the top, from the simple to the complex, starting with the most urgent interests and arriving in the end at the most remote and most general, a social organization would emerge the function of which would be the greatest well-being and the greatest freedom for everybody, and would draw together the whole of mankind into a community of comradeship, and would be modified and improved according to changing circumstances and the lessons learned from experience." Malatesta goes on to sketch an outline of how this could come about.

I recommend his "At the Cafe" (1897-1920; see my review) in conversational dialogue as a more reader-friendly guide to his brand of anarchism. His essay "Fra Contadini" (ca. 1884) or "Dialogue between Two Workers" is also a convenient if very early summation of his plans. However, to supplement one's understanding of the principles he was skilled at enlivening in such chats, this standard reference also has its uses for activists and for readers.

This book is a good read for those who enjoy exploring political solutions and also enjoy challenging their perceptions of faith, religion, and their role not only in government but in daily living. Some sections are heavy with explanation of political challenges and strategies, but stick with it. Good character development makes you care about the people and the outcomes.

A believable future - America facing years of poor leadership and economic mismanagement - meets a Southern man of faith as President. Schantz incorporates history with political maneuvering in his refreshing novel of intelligent personalities tackling a seemingly hopeless American predicament. Too bad there's no Teddy Bopps on the ticket for 2016; I would vote for him.

About the Author
Luke M. Gerdes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Military Academy, West Point. In 2011 he worked as a visiting researcher with the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College. He is the past recipient of West Point's Minerva Fellowship in the Study of Islamic Ideology and Asian Cultures, as well as the Smith Richardson World Politics and Statecraft Fellowship. This is an exceptionally well edited collection of quantitative methods for the analysis and exploration of covert networks. It covers new methods of quantitative social network analysis, graph analysis, and non-obvious associations based on time and space.

If you're interested in diving into hidden networks, and you're not afraid of a little math, this is a great book.

Buddhism for all kinds of people.

Buddhism is one of the few religions that I do not consider harmful to humans. This religion does not give anyone back, yet is not as well known as many others. What I liked most about this book, jumps at a glance: The information is very accurate and complete that it is not difficult to understand its basics. Beyond that, there is not a book that tries to force you to join Buddhism, but encourages you to take the aspects that can improve your lifestyle and extract the most profit of it.
From the teachings of Dukkha, to meditation techniques to achieve inner peace and Nirvana. This guide is exepcional and I enjoyed it. I recommend it.

For peace of mind and true happiness...

I knew what Buddhism is by watching movies, but after reading this book it's the opposite of what I knew and saw. Buddhism after all is a religion based on spirituality and attaining mental peace. Buddhism as what the book says it is the training of the mind to identify the roots of suffering in order to attain the ultimate goal of true happiness. It takes a lot of practice but when both mind and body work together harmony or peace will attain. It's simple to read that even the beginners like me could easily understand. Thumbs up for you John!

"No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path." - Siddhartha. This quote says a lot about my life. I recommend this book to those people who wanted to achieve inner peace, to attain that heart felt happiness, and a different kind of spiritual healing. What's great about the author is that he wrote something about his previous life experiences before he discovered Buddhism that changed his life. One thing this book is different among the rest of the book that I had read is that the author personally included his own email address for those people who wanted to contact him to gain deeper understanding and knowledge towards the subject.
