Fire fight after Fire fight an excellent up close and personal war memoir.
By Jug Head
This is a terrific account of close in fire fight after fire fight. The reader travels along with troops on one endless hump after endless hump. The soul crushing heat and humidity , clever booby traps designed to mutilate , Monsoons bringing relentless rain, day and night soaked to the bone. Rain so vicious you can't see or hear the NVA ,5 feet from your face. Giant Tigers stalking our soldiers as they stalk the NVA. All of the above why Leeches feast without end. Close friends mutilated and killed ,why survivors push on ,no time to morn, just stay in the fight.
In closing I was a Marine grunt chasing the VC 1965 / 66 . We carried M14's and never came out of the field never! There was no rear area resupply was a joke. Absolutely no Huey's , our uniforms rotted off and we were expected to fix them with com wire . I guess it was a different war?

Great read
By Edith Lesh
I was impressed by the authors straight forward presentation. Many of the other Vietnam memoirs I have read the author has used to brag about his own great feats, whereas this author presented a good story line that was not a braggers tribute to himself. I was a little disappointed to find out the girlfriend married someone else, but that was quite common and continues to happen all to often to our military people who have to be away on duty.

Plato's Universe of Discourse, by D. R. Khashaba

Traditional philosophy has been pronounced dead. Humankind, under the governance of a hubristic science bereft of wisdom, is rapidly hurtling towards self-destruction. To save humanity, philosophy as understood by Socrates and Plato must be revived. Hume undermined both science and philosophy. Kant came to the rescue of science but had no comfort for philosophy; his Copernican revolution only went halfway. It's high time to radically revolutionize current conceptions of the nature of philosophy and philosophical thinking. We have to make philosophy once again relevant to human aspirations and once again capable of having a role in fighting the false conceptions and false values that are undermining human civilization. This book goes out as "a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way" of Queen Philosophia to her rightful throne, to guide human life and guard the ideals and values that endow humanity with its worth, to avert the annihilation that the hubris of knowledge devoid of wisdom is fast driving us to.

I recommend it to anyone interested in a highly literate alternative ...
By Richard Schain
This is the latest writing of the well known independent philosopher, D. R. Khashaba; independent meaning not university tied. Those who are familiar with his writings will find this to be vintage Khashaba: personal, outspoken, critical of philosophical academia, searching into the depths of reality. As usual, he has no patience for contemporary analytic philosophy, seeing it to be 'dead' to human needs. His discussions on Kant and Wittgenstein are particularly provocative, but requiring considerable staying power on the part of a reader. And of course, there are highly original discussions of Plato's works, which is Khashaba's specialty.
Much of the book contains unpublished writings of Khashaba that could stand alone. This work might be more accurately titled "Khashaba's Universe of Discourse". I recommend it to anyone interested in a highly literate alternative approach to what passes for philosophy at the present time. Since it is only available in e-book form, I suggest printing out and binding it, so as to have it easily available for dipping into at one's convenience.

Captured in the Middle: Tradition and Experience in Contemporary Native American Writing (McLellan Endowed Series), by Sidner Larson

Sidner Larson's Captured in the Middle embodies the very nature of Indian storytelling, which is circular, drawing upon the personal experiences of the narrator at every turn. Larson teaches about contemporary American Indian literature by describing his own experiences as a child on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana and as a professor at the University of Oregon.

Larson argues that contemporary Native American literary criticism is stalled. On one hand are the scholars who portray Indians stereotypically, assuming that the experiences of all tribal groups have largely been the same. On the other hand are those scholars who focus on the "authenticity" of the writer. In contrast, Larson considers the scholarship of Vine Deloria, Jr., who has a genuine understanding of the balance required in dealing with these issues. Two writers who have successfully redescribed many of the contemporary romantic stereotypes are James Welch and Louise Erdrich, both northern Plains Indians whose works are markedly different, their writing highlighting the disparate ways tribal groups have responded to colonization.

Larson describes Indians today as postapocalyptic peoples who have already lived through the worst imaginable suffering. By confronting the issues of fear, suppression, and lost identity through literature, Indians may finally move forward to imagine and create for themselves a better future, serving as models for the similarly fractured cultures found throughout the world today.

To educate yourself before reading another Native selection
By A Customer
In order to understand the ramifications of the latest Native American title, author, subject, you must first read this book. Don't hesitate to take notes. There is no substitute for the insight provided by "Captured in the Middle." Your understanding of Native peoples (in addition to that of available Native literature) will only elevate from the minimal plateau supplied by similarly charged works (e.g. Fergus M. Bordewich) to genuine comprehension.

My Life: Based on the Book Gifted Hands, by Ben Carson M.D.

Ben Carson grew up in the inner cities of Boston and Detroit with his mother and brother.  When his father deserted the family, Ben’s mother worked several jobs to support her boys yet worked even harder to encourage them to get an education and follow their dreams.  Ben’s dreams nearly ended when his anger at being poor and the ridicule of a school mate caused him to snap; he lunged at the boy and cut him with a knife.  That brush with attempted murder caused Carson to break down and ask God to turn him around.  And turn him around he did.  A poor student, Carson under the guidance of his mother and brother became the best student in his class, his school, and ultimately earned a scholarship to Yale.  The next time he used a knife was as a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital where he pioneered surgery techniques that not only saved lives but miraculously gave countless children an amazing quality of life.

My Life is the story of a young boy who could have remained trapped in poverty were it not for his mother’s tough and sacrificial love, his own perseverance that he learned from her example, and his deep faith that called him to do great and mighty things.

This book contains a new chapter about Dr. Carson’s philosophies of serving one’s country, becoming role models for people with disadvantaged backgrounds, using the talents God has given you, embracing what success really is, and believing, youths and adults alike, that with hard work and perseverance, “you can do it.” And on May 4, 2015, Dr. Ben Carson declared himself a candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America.

You Can Do It
By D. Stone
Dr. Carson shares the story of his struggles as a child, as a student and from the viewpoint of a minority. He was blessed with a mother who encouraged him to be the best he could be and to not settle for less than his best. He recognizes those who helped and encouraged him along the way. He never fell into the entitlement trap that would have locked him into poverty. This is a powerful book.

A very informative book.
By Joyce
I don't usually read serious books. But I have taken an interest inDr. Ben Carson as a candidate for President. My interest was caught from the first chapter. He writes like he speaks. Down to earth and with honesty. He is a self made man who worked hard and over came many obstacles to get were he is today. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Killing Pablo: The Hunt for the World's Greatest Outlaw, by Mark Bowden

A tour de force of investigative journalism-Killing Pablo is the story of the violent rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, the head of the Colombian Medellin cocaine cartel. Escobar's criminal empire held a nation of thirty million hostage in a reign of terror that would only end with his death. In an intense, up-close account, award-winning journalist Mark Bowden exposes details never before revealed about the U.S.-led covert sixteen-month manhunt. With unprecedented access to important players—including Colombian president Cisar Gaviria and the incorruptible head of the special police unit that pursued Escobar, Colonel Hugo Martinez-as well as top-secret documents and transcripts of Escobar's intercepted phone conversations, Bowden has produced a gripping narrative that is a stark portrayal of rough justice in the real world.

Amazon.com Review
Readers of Black Hawk Down know Mark Bowden can tell an exciting story about as well as any writer at work today. Killing Pablo is further proof. It describes the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, a notorious Colombian drug lord who became one of the narcotic trade's first billionaires. Pablo--Bowden refers to him by his first name throughout the book--started out as a petty thief and wound up running a massive smuggling empire. At his height in the 1980s, he owned fleets of boats and planes, plus 19 separate residences in Medellin, each with its own helipad. Violence marked everything he did: "He wasn't an entrepreneur, and he wasn't even an especially talented businessman. He was just ruthless." He bought off police, politicians, and judges throughout his country, and killed many others who wouldn't cooperate. The Colombian government tried to capture him, but without much luck; he evaded them time after time. "Now and then the police achieved enough surprise to catch him, literally, with his pants down. In [1988], about one thousand national police raided one of his mansions," writes Bowden. "Pablo fled in his underwear, avoiding the police cordon on foot." He got away, again, but his days were numbered. He was making powerful enemies in both Colombia and the United States. The final straw probably came when Pablo's men murdered a popular politician and, three months later, planted a bomb on a plane, killing 110 people, including two Americans.

The bulk of Killing Pablo describes what happened when the U.S. government put its resources behind the hunt for Pablo. Bowden describes the search in gripping detail, from the massive electronic-surveillance effort to bureaucratic infighting between rival U.S. agencies. This is an outstanding work of reportorial journalism, too: in the epilogue, Bowden drops tantalizing hints that it was an American--not a Colombian--who delivered the killing shot to Pablo in 1993. Readers looking for a real-life thriller--or any kind of thriller, for that matter--won't do much better than Killing Pablo.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of the bestseller Black Hawk Down, which depicted the U.S. military's involvement in Somalia, Bowden hits another home run with his chronicle of the manhunt for Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. He traces the prevalence of violence in Colombian history as background, then launches into the tale of the dramatic rise and fall of "Don Pablo," as he was known. Packed with detail, the book shows how Escobar, a pudgy, uneducated man who smoked marijuana daily, ruthlessly built the infamous Medellin cartel, a drug machine that eventually controlled much of Colombian life. As Bowden shows, the impotence of the Colombian government left a void readily filled by Escobar's mafia. While not ignoring the larger picture e.g., the terrible drug-related murders that wracked the South American country in the late 1980s and early 1990s Bowden never loses sight of the human story behind the search for Escobar, who was finally assassinated in 1993, and the terrible toll the hunt took on many of its main players.. There's a smoking gun here: Bowden charges that U.S. special forces were likely involved in helping some of Colombia's other drug lords assassinate perhaps more than a hundred people linked to Escobar. There's no doubt, according to Bowden, that the U.S. government was involved in the search for Escobar after a 1989 airplane bombing that killed 100 and made him, in Bowden's words, "Public Enemy Number One in the world." This revelation highlights one of Bowden's many journalistic accomplishments here: he shows how the search for Escobar became an end in itself. (May 8)Forecast: Bowden will go on a monster tour (about two dozen cities) to promote this BOMC selection, which also has its own Web site (www.killingpablo.com). Expect healthy sales.

From Library Journal
Who is Pablo Escobar? Is he the loving family man who cares about his wife and children, the man who wants to help raise the standard of living for people in his community and loves nothing more than to play soccer with the kids in the neighborhood? Or is he the heartless kingpin who helped bring drugs into the United States, waged war with the Medellin Drug Cartel, and played cat and mouse with the police and the U.S. military who tried to capture him? The program, read by the author (Black Hawk Down), includes film of the final hunt for Escobar and of the aftermath. (The CDs are enhanced for computers with the appropriate plug-ins.) It is fascinating to hear about the ways that the police worked to locate Escobar using a variety of tracking devices, but the descriptions of the concomitant drug murders can be a bit graphic. Libraries with true crime collections will want to add this. Danna Bell-Russel, Library of Congress

Explosive!
By Robert S. Campbell
Killing Pablo is a hard-hitting book that truly represents the brutal reality of the war in Colombia. As a Special Forces Master Sergeant with multiple tours in Colombia I can honestly say that Mark Bowden has done a masterful job of encapsulating this conflagration by describing the events that led to the rise and fall of one of its most notorious figures-Pablo Escobar. Bowden starts off by giving a brief history of the war in Colombia, starting with La Violencia, and then of course the current Narco war that is currently consuming Colombia. The events are taken from various sources and Mr. Bowden does a superb job of describing, in detail, what lengths the US and Colombia went through to take down one of the largest criminal empires in history. The book ends with questions that we as American should be asking ourselves. Is it worth the effort - in the name of National Security- to selectively target foreign citizens for assassination? My conclusion is incomplete. However, I will say that the removal of Pablo Escobar was nothing more than a tactical victory in a war Colombia and the United States are losing strategically. This book is a must for Special Operations Soldiers, Latin American Historians, Law Enforcement Officers, and anyone who is involved in the policy decisions concerning the US war on drugs.

One of Summer's Better Reads
By Steve Iaco
I purchased "Killing Pablo" solely on the strength of Mark Bowden's previous stellar work, "Black Hawk Down." While "Pablo" isn't quite up to the standard of "Black Hawk" (one of the best books I've read in the past five years), it is nevertheless an engaging read that is at once informative and entertaining.
"Pablo" is Pablo Escobar, the ruthless Colombian drup kingpin who, by the late 1980s, had amassed one of the world's largest -- and certainly most illicit -- fortunes. Mr. Bowden recounts the story of how the notorious international narco-gangster was finally brought to heel by a combination of Colombian law enforcement agencies, the U.S. DEA and Army Delta Force (which provided critical training and surveillance technology), and importantly, Escobar's rivals in the cocaine cartel. The vigilante terrorism visited upon the infrastructure of Escobar's empire by his cocaine cartel rivals (equally as vicious as Pablo himself) -- with the tacit sanction of the Colombian government -- was the critical factor in the eventual tracking down and killing of Pablo following an off-and-on-again three-year manhunt.
This book is included in the "Wall Street Journal's" review (Friday, May 18) of the better reads of the Summer of 2001. That judgment gets no quarrel from this reader.

Coca Killer
By Konrei
KILLING PABLO is the story of the rise, hunt, fall and death of Pablo Escobar, the chief of the Medellin Cocaine Cartel. Mark Bowden (BLACK HAWK DOWN) is gifted in bringing essentially unknown tales into the public eye, and here he does it again, dramatically. His ability to take the hidden and twisted threads of covert operations and weave a complete story from them is impressive.

Pablo, as Bowden refers to him throughout, was a small-time hood who rose to true if notorious greatness on a ladder stained with blood. At the peak of his influence he had a net worth of billions of dollars.

Pablo cultivated a jolly demeanor and, in truth, lacked couth, though he could be personally disarming. In dress, he preferred white velcro-strap Nike sneakers and blue jeans. He was short and plump. He was hardly the image of the "Don Pablo" he wanted to be. He was easy to underestimate, as the world discovered.

At his zenith, he had all but convinced the ruling oligarchy of Colombia that coca cultivation and processing was a growth industry, even if frowned upon by staid norteamericanos with no taste for trend.

In 1983 Pablo was elected a Congressional alternate from his state of Antioquia, ruled Medellin with an iron fist, and was a serious contender for the Presidency of his nation. Ten years later he was dead.

Pablo Escobar was a study in contradictions. He was 'the most Wanted man in the world' who spent most of his criminal life in the open. A sociopathic megalomaniac, he saw nothing bizarre in blowing up planes and buildings and killing hundreds in the course of targeting one man. He was a devoted husband and father with a penchant for seducing teenage girls.

Unlike some other crimelords who habitually restrained themselves from killing 'noncombatants,' Pablo gloried in taking the lives of his enemies' friends and relatives no matter how uninvolved they were in the drug trade. As a result, no one in Colombia was beyond his reach, and even the U.S. Ambassador had to live in a special security vault while Pablo was at large.

A man who victimized others constantly, he saw himself as a victim of the State. A man on the outside he always wished to be on the inside and bought, bribed and murdered his way into positions of authority. A compleat robber baron, he spoke the rhetoric of Che Guevara, and spent hundreds of millions to rebuild Medellin into a major metropolis and made its citizens into some of the most fortunate of Colombianos. To this day, Pablo is lauded in certain quarters of Colombia as a Robin Hood-type character, but Bowden makes clear that Pablo's hero image was carefully constructed and disseminated through his vast public relations apparatus to insure his own protection.

Pablo was a man incapable of restraint who ultimately overreached himself. Although he had most of Colombia's government in his pocket, he failed to appreciate the need for subtlety in his game of control. For Pablo, the government, the police, and ultimately the United States were just rival cartels to be bossed and intimidated. Never realizing how badly he had outmatched himself, he became the instrument of his own destruction.

His fall came when he simply walked out of the prison he himself had built and staffed after reaching a ridiculously one-sided plea bargain with the Colombian government to stop intra-Cartel violence. Once Pablo escaped, the government of Colombia was virtually forced into a "hunter-killer" mode of operations against him, based on his own untrustworthiness.

Aided by the United States, Colombia hunted Pablo, at first with a notable lack of zeal. Too many ranking Colombians were beholden to him. But as Pablo retaliated by attacking innocent civilians throughout the country, his public support waned and his Cartel associates faded away. Pablo soon found himself hunted by Colombian and American Special Ops troops, and a terrifying vigilante group "Los Pepes," made up of people who had been victimized by him, Cali Cartel competitors, and other shadowy individuals. As Bowden cynically says, we need to "surmise" who they were.

Pablo's fall changed nothing. Cali became the new cocaine epicenter and the government's ties to the drug kingpins were, if anything, even stronger. But Pablo was a clear target. Moreover, he was a man who simply couldn't stop himself from killing. It was decided at the highest levels that, like a mad dog, Pablo needed to be destroyed.

Pablo died ignominiously, shot by a government-backed Death Squad, with his overhanging belly on prominent display in the cover photograph of the book. His hunters shaved his moustache into a Hitlerian brush for fun. Their smiles are both bitter and mocking. That one photograph, hanging in many government offices, Colombian and American, is Pablo's legacy.

Bowden obviously has no love for Pablo Escobar, but he is also clearly equivocal about the methods and results of killing Pablo. The vast energy put into finding and eliminating this one man certainly never blunted the drug culture, but it did rid the world of one of the most powerful and amoral figures in modern history.

There's a lesson here for the post-9/11 world.

Rand's dark portrait of the future was first released in England in 1938 and reedited for publication in the United States in 1946. Review
A writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly. ("The New York Times")

From the Back Cover
He lived in the dark ages of the future. In a loveless world he dared to love the woman of his choice. In an age that had lost all trace of science and civilization he had the courage to seek and find knowledge. But these were not the crime for which he would be hunted. He was marked for death because he had committed the unpardonable sin: he had stood forth from the mindless human herd. He was a man alone.

Ayn Rand's classic tale of a future dark age of the great "We" -- in which individuals have no name, no independence, and no values -- anticipates her later masterpieces, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.

This is not a book.
By Kat McFall
Anthem is not a book. It is not a philosophical or governmental treatise. As Ayn Rand herself admitted, it has neither a real plot nor a real climax. Anthem is a poem.
Its final two chapters are (according to Rand) the "anthem"--the celebration of the human ego. This is not done in logical terms, but in pure emotional exultation. In my opinion, Rand's writing throughout the book is skilled, passionate and evocative, but in the last two chapters she really shines.
For presentations of Rand's philosophy, Objectivism, in logical form, read Atlas Shrugged. For a ruthless, beautiful evocation of the emotional aspect of Rand's philosophy of egoism, read Anthem. If you have socialist leanings, or simply have always assumed the many is more important that the one, the book may disturb you greatly (it did me, when I read it the first time). It will change the way you feel, and Rand's later work will change the way you think.
Highly recommended. This book is often misunderstood, but if you read it with the understanding that it is a poem, and not a book, your understanding of it will be enhanced.

Short, Sweet, Thought Provoking Intro to Ayn Rand
By khettrich
The novel is a tale of a time when the human race has lost all individuality, when people are reduced to numbers and have lost their freedom to make decisions for themselves. Through this novel, written and completed while Ayn Rand was working on Fountainhead, Ayn Rand introduces her philosophy concerning the individual.
The novel really got me thinking and I couldn't put it down. At just over a hundred pages, i read it all in one setting, and thought about it the rest of the week. Though the world in Anthem is a very dark and depressed one indeed, it comments nonetheless on more subtle forms of control and losses of our individual freedom in today's world.
An excellent read and a great intro to her philosophy. This book led me to purchase Atlas Shrugged, and I recommend these both to all my friends.
Amazing and Powerful.

If you want to say that you've read Ayn Rand, this is the place to start
By DrDWilliams
I heard a lot about Ayn Rand from my elders 20 years ago. At the time, I tried to read Fountainhead, but never could get into it. This past year, I happened to run into Anthem and bought it on my Kindle. This is the book I should have started with all those years ago. Rand's rant against the evils of unmitigated collectivism still plays well for those who live and work in broken communities where the status quo has taken on the character of revelation. Rand inspires rebellion against group think. Add some real critical thinking skills to Rand's simplistic vision and one has the potential for solid citizenship.

This could work as the Next American President
By Laurie A. Oliver
Congratulations, Fred Seaman. You have written a book which addresses, without the typical fanfare, the dishonesty which is abundant in American Politics today, and which makes the average taxpayer's stomach boil with indignation and disgust. Although a work of fiction, the logical approach that Mr. Seaman takes to the situation where we find we are not being represented by the people we elect, is quite refreshing and gives the reading public hope. No particular ax to grind in terms of Democrat or Republican, the tale is told in a manner that leaves the reader wondering at the end....Why don't we do this?

The Mortality and Morality of Nations: Jews, Afrikaners and French Canadians, by Uriel Abulof

Standing at the edge of life's abyss, we seek meaningful order. We commonly find this 'symbolic immortality' in religion, civilization, state and nation. What happens, however, when the nation itself appears mortal? The Mortality and Morality of Nation seeks to answer this question, theoretically and empirically. It argues that mortality makes morality, and right makes might; the nation's sense of a looming abyss informs its quest for a higher moral ground, which, if reached, can bolster its vitality. The book investigates nationalism's promise of moral immortality and its limitations via three case studies: French Canadians, Israeli Jews, and Afrikaners. All three have been insecure about the validity of their identity or the viability of their polity, or both. They have sought partial redress in existential self-legitimation: by the nation, of the nation and for the nation's very existence.

Review
"Uriel Abulof offers a fascinating exploration of the existential challenges faced by what Milan Kundera has dubbed 'small nations' - ethnonational communities that experience a profound sense of collective fragility. Theoretically ambitious and empirically rich, The Mortality and Morality of Nations delves into the self-understandings of the French Canadians of Québec, the Afrikaners of South Africa, and Israeli Jews to explain how common fears of national demise compel them to seek diverse means to bolster the moral foundations of their nationhood. This lucidly written study makes a unique contribution to our knowledge of politics, morality and security."
Matthew Evangelista, author of Gender, Nationalism, and War: Conflict on the Movie Screen (Cambridge, 2011)

"An unusual and impressive mix of theory and empirical research that helps us make sense of the ways in which nations deal with threats to their existence as distinct communities."
Bernard Yack, Lerman-Neubauer Professor of Democracy, Brandeis University, Massachusetts

"What Uriel Abulof has succeeded in doing is to take issues of political morality out of the ethereal philosophical plane and demonstrate how deeply embedded they are in the day-to-day rhetoric and practice of nationalism. While the primary focus here is on small, existentially vulnerable nations, the implications are sweepingly global, for in an age of nuclear deterrence, global terrorism, and environmental threats, the sense of existential dread extends to all peoples, large and small. This book is an intellectually ambitious undertaking of deep originality. It holds profound significance for our understanding of the interplay between ethics and identity in the politics of self-determination."
Aviel Roshwald, Georgetown University, Washington DC

"Uriel Abulof has written an original and deeply insightful comparison of three 'small peoples' - Israeli Jews, Afrikaners and Québecois - whose ethnic boundary-construction has been informed by a state of existential insecurity. As well written as it is timely, Abulof's book is essential reading for students of comparative politics, nationalism and conflict resolution."
Derek Penslar, University of Oxford

"This innovative study of 'small nation nationalism' focuses on a subjective sense of vulnerability rather than size. Uriel Abulof analyzes and compares three cases, using methods which make accessible mass data on popular and elite discourse. This enables him to offer persuasive arguments about such key questions as: Who are we? Why are we? Will we continue to be? How will we continue to be? This illuminating publication should encourage similar investigations into other relevant cases."
John Breuilly, London School of Economics and Political Science

"The Mortality and Morality of Nations is a sophisticated and imaginative analysis of the debate over national survival, which is one that dominates the politics of deeply divided societies. On the one hand, there is the demand that national survival be safeguarded by any means and regardless of moral qualms. On the other hand, there is the insistence that a system based on injustice will, over the longer run, destroy a nation's soul. Uriel Abulof illuminates the severe tensions between imperatives of morality and mortality."
Hermann Giliomee, Professor Emeritus, University of Cape Town

"Rich in empirical detail and thoroughly grounded in political theory and philosophy, Uriel Abulof has written a deeply fascinating study of how small nations cope with challenges and threats to their survival and offers an inspired and telling comparison of French Canadians, Jews and Zionists, and Afrikaners that offers compelling insights into how small nations' collective identities and polities evolve and survive, over time."
Stefan Wolff, Institute for Conflict, Cooperation and Security, University of Birmingham

"In this highly original and fascinating book, Uriel Abulof draws attention to the role of ethnic groups and nations as subjects of the human quest for enduring meaning, sense of identity, and moral purpose that transcend transient individual existence. His subtle and elegant discussion of three cases - the French Canadians, Israeli Jews and Afrikaners - reveals the distinct and changing identity-defining frames and ethical discourses that each of these communities has evolved in its struggle to legitimize and self-justify its place in the world."
Azar Gat, author of Nations: The Long History and Deep Roots of Political Ethnicity and Nationalism (2013)

Imaginative, learned and wise - highly recommend!

Professor Abulof has marvelously transcended the artificial or abstract boundaries of political philosophy, sociology, ethics, morality, and comparative politics. By forging a new notion of political existentialism, this book illuminates the very real implications of a nation or group’s view of their own collective future – particularly when marked by a sense of looming demise or existential fragility. By using three diverse case studies in Afrikaaners, Israelis, and Québecois, groups whose collective histories, visions or national ambitions have taken quite divergent paths, this fascinating book investigates the search for moral meaning , legitimacy, and self-determination when the very future of the group identity (or perceptions thereof) appears insecure. Professor Abulof’s book should find broad appeal: for students or academics searching for a theoretically nuanced and novel approach to studies of nationalism, self-determination, and political legitimacy as well as for readers seeking to understand how we – as individuals, citizens, and nations – deal with threats, both concrete and existential, to our physical security, moral acceptability, and uncertain future.

I found this book to be a wonderfully well-written and engaging read. The sources and references are quite impressive- from his opening citations of Milan Kundera, to a vast range of fascinating historical anecdotes, to references to art, film, poetry, and literature. The charts and illustrations are also highly instructive and original – the forest of “causa sui” trees is particularly unique and imaginative. Far from a philosophy past its prime, existentialism is fascinating, relevant and ever more important for today! I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from Professor Abulof.

By A Steinberg
As the offspring of a Canadian mother and a South African father who met in Israel and produced me, how could I resist buying The Mortality and Morality of Nations which discusses French Canadians, Israeli Jews and South African Afrikaners. Or perhaps I should say the existential fears of these “small nations” as Prof. Abulof refers to them. I soon found out that the idea of small nations was borrowed from Kundera, one of my favorite authors (though I had never read anything of his that referred to small nations before).

Much to my dismay I found that before getting to the subject of my interest, I had to wade through a chapter of theory. But once I got into the book I actually found this part quite fascinating, and the Calvino metaphor of the city suspended over a chasm was quite brilliant; the poor creatures keep weaving threads to stop themselves from falling, beautifully capturing the idea of the existential threads of morality and security that Abulof's insecure nations keep weaving in order to bolster themselves.

All in all it proved a fascinating read and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

A Different Way of Looking at the World
By UncommonSense
The Mortality and Morality of Nations is a book worth reading for anyone interested in the conflicts now taking place all over the globe. Its stated aim is to examine how nations or ethnic groups at risk cope with their self-conceived dangers. It examines Israeli Jews, French Canadians and Afrikaners by tapping into each group's own dialogue. But the tools used are applicable on a far wider scale.
The author has shown convincingly that understanding what drives human behavior goes well beyond measuring supposedly objective factors such as GDP or military strength or the the actual strength that the enemy can employ. It is driven – he says also driven - by subjective factors, how the actors see the situation. Now this might appear common-sense, but it is common sense that is not widely applied to politics and conflicts, which still tend to largely look at what they see as objective reality. It has been applied by psychologists who won the Noble Prize for Economics, by managing to demonstrate the "irrational" behavior of investors. In this remarkable book Prof. Abulof has managed quite convincingly to do the same for political behavior and behavior in general, providing a wonderfully innovative approach.

Review
Starred review.
A touching memoir of a truly miserable childhood. That Bouman could write of his life of abuse in Michigan and make it sound like fun is the mark of a man who has completely come to terms with the higher plan for his life. It may have taken him more than two decades to discover it, but when he did, he embraced it and became a man with a mission. His writing is matter-of-fact and in no way an attempt to purge the pain of living with a father who treated him like an imbecile incapable of anything and regularly beat him and his brother. Somehow, the author manages to describe a life that, between beatings, would seem attractive to most boys. When Bouman was young, his father put an airplane engine in a VW to make a carplane, and he opened up a shooting range on their 11-acre land and purchased a massive boat. He also bought a tank, which just about everyone thought was the coolest thing ever. He actually let the boys drive the tank, and it proved useful for putting out fires and demolishing unwanted buildings. Bouman seems to be trying to paint a more pleasant picture of his childhood, but the facts of the beatings and the demolition of any character he might have developed seep through. Later on, substance abuse threatened to end his military career, until someone invited him to church. Who knows why such things appear just as a soul is sinking into the abyss? Religion changed him, and he eventually found his wife and opened an orphanage in Cambodia in the early 1990s, where he finally discovered the profit of his upbringing. This immensely inspiring story shows how Bouman tore success from defeat. Never preachy or self-pitying, just an honest story well written and well told. (Kirkus Reviews)

A memoir as weighty, heartbreaking, and shocking as Pat Conroy’s The Great Santiti. . . Bizarre and unpredictable, Bouman’s memoir transcends the normal tropes of the redemption tale and becomes a testament to the power of human fortitude and forgiveness. (Publishers Weekly)

A must-read. Best book I've read in years.
By Meteorbanker
I don't remember reading a more moving and attention grabbing personal memoir. Mark uncovers the darkness of his upbringing in the most riveting and vivid detail. I was able to visualize the whole story as if I was watching a movie. Amazingly, the story isn't all sad, although it is very sad and raw at times. You will probably laugh and cry through this book, and you might even find yourself wanting to reach into the book to rescue Mark and his siblings. There is plenty of humor to lighten the darkness throughout, and hope of Christ shines brightly as the book closes.

Every man can relate to elements of this story, but this extraordinary story is one of a kind, especially in the way it is told. I HIGHLY recommend this book as a Father's Day gift, but every adult would be captivated by this story, especially those who spent any time in the country.

and at times the joy and triumph of simply surviving
By Mike Butler
Not given to reading books of this nature I wondered how long it would take me to fumble through the three-hundred plus pages, However, upon beginning to read I found myself so intrigued that I finished the book in just over a day. The story captivated me and was written in a manner that allowed me to almost feel the pain, the sorrow, and at times the joy and triumph of simply surviving. This book took me on a ride that prompted my own childhood memories, many of which had a similar undertone, and culminated with me sobbing (which is saying a lot for this 6'3", 250 pound football coach) at the beauty of what God was able to do in the lives of Mark and his father.

Even if you are not an avid reader you must read this book. You will be blessed just by seeing the Grace of God working toward an unexpected reconciliation

For those who love an unbelievable true story
By Kate Winkle
A childhood unlike any other: Mark Bouman's memoir "The Tank Man's Son" encompasses a series of events almost too fantastic to believe could happen to one family. A father who brings home a tank and builds gun ranges— and who is as violent as his varied collection of "toys"— dominates Bouman's youth. As you follow his growth from child to man, your heart aches for his situation, even as you wonder at the terror and hardship that groomed him for a greater purpose later in life. Punctuated with moments of joy and surprising triumph, this story of a dictatorial father and a redemption long coming is poignant — an unbelievable story, amazing because it is true.
