The only book to tell Magna Carta’s story through places associated with it, through England and France to the United States
The Magna Carta has undergone an extraordinary journey from the palaces and villages of England, through the castles and towns of France, via the Middle East, and ending in the United States today. Along the way, the book dispels the popular notions that King John was an unredeemed tyrant, the baron’s champions of civil liberty, and that Magna Carta was the foundation of democracy and universal freedom. The true story is much more intriguing than a simple fiction of good defeating evil, and the author tries to answer one of the great mysteries about the Charter: why today is it much more enthusiastically revered in America than it is in the country of its origin? But myths can be powerful. And the account of how this largely technical medieval document became an inspiration to those who have struggled over centuries to win democracy and freedom under the law reveals a great deal about our need for symbols and our inclination to believe what we want to believe.

History Made Lively
By Tony Percy
This is a very lively and informative book, which takes a highly original approach to exploring the facts behind the mythology of Magna Carta, evidenced by the author's recording of his personal experiences in visiting twenty places associate with it. Derek Taylor writes with tremendous verve about the iconic but highly misunderstood document. He has a very respectful but analytical ear for historical truth, to the extent that it is ever revealed accurately in official documents and contemporary accounts, and balances it with a journalist's sharp eye for today's physical world. He has been slightly let down by his publisher, who sadly did not ensure that the legend on his map corresponds to the chapter titles identifying the places, and I would have liked to see a bibliography. No doubt these issues will be addressed in the forthcoming paperback edition. But it's a wonderfully entertaining account for anybody - especially those whose impression of the Charter may have been coloured by romanticised schoolboy lessons or by pious hyperbole from politicians.

Two thumbs up for Magna Carta in 20 Places!!! Excellent!!
By Tommy
Let me start off with the admission that I am a history buff. I am fascinated with history from all around the world. I had learned about the Magna Carta during my school days, but never read any books covering the subject. When I saw this book by Derek J. Taylor, entitled "Magna Carta in 20 Places", it intrigued me. What was there about the Magna Carta that I didn't know? Well apparently a lot! The author certainly has a way with words as he describes scenes to the point that I can see what he is describing in my mind's eye! I also found that much of what I was taught about Magna Carta was wrong and mostly just a myth. Mr. Taylor gives factual presentation to the story as it unfolds, not holding anything back as he describes the people involved regarding their perceived and factual personalities and behaviors. Mr. Taylor has opened up chapters of English and American history that are unknown to the average American. The author takes the reader to significant places in the world in order to tell the story of the Magna Carta as well as the impact this document had in those various places, including the United States where it was used to help author the Bill of Rights. Mr. Taylor takes the reader from England to Israel, France, Jamestown and Washington DC with fascinating stories to keep you wanting to know more.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who even has a slight interest in history or the Magna Carta. It is a wonderful read, easy to understand, and the excellent use of descriptive wording will have you feeling as though you were there with the author researching the material for this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!

Entertaining, informative and made for TV!
By D J Henderson
This is a history book for those who don't usually read history books. It has none of the eye-glazing tedium of other books on Magna Carta written by academics. And that's because it takes a journalist to write good history! Derek Taylor is, apparently, a former TV reporter. Now he has turned to writing history. His book brings to life the full story of the Magna Carta which is, even today, a greatly misunderstood document.
Mr Taylor has visited 20 key locations where the Great Charter's story has unfolded over 800 years. From the bleak fenlands of eastern England via France and the Middle East, he ends in today's U.S. capital, Washington DC. This is a lively, informative and easy-to-read adventure. And what revelations are in store!
Was King John really a tyrant? Did Magna Carta bring about the birth of modern democracy? Did it really define the mechanics of government and introduce trial by jury? What did Clause 39 mean and how many people did it initially apply to? What principles did it establish and how many times was Magna Carta revised? Why is Magna Carta revered so much more in the USA than in the UK?
Do you know where the "saucy castle" and the "pleasure palace" are? You'll have to read the book to find out!
A great Christmas present for all ages and tastes.
Are there any TV or film producers reading this? If so, you should quickly realize that this is a 20-part television series in the making. And who better to present it than the author himself! HBO where are you?
