Thought provoking and life changing

Why? is a small book with a big message. It will make you think about your life in important and profound ways. It will remind you why you are here and how to find the meaning and purpose in your life. "When you forget the reason why you're here, every life choice is a blind one. You find yourself choosing friends and partners and jobs and communities without a sense of where you're headed or what truly matters. Life becomes a collection of events, obligations, disappointments and moments of relief--a long effort to avoid pain and find pleasure. And happiness becomes a visitor, showing up at odd moments and disappearing again." I finished reading the book days ago, but the message has stayed with me. This is a beautiful book that everyone should read.

An Existential Conundrum

An existential conundrum: "I've done everything `right,' so why am I so unhappy?" This question, rather than being seen as a dead end, leading to spinning in confusion, frustration, and ultimate resignation, is according to authors McKay, ÓLaoire and Metzner the essential/pivotal question to ask. This question will force you to stop looking everywhere else for answers and instead to begin to look within. Your own life experiences and choices (not someone else's) become your very rich research material. The authors offer thoughts on what constitutes true happiness, on the need to align our values with our ideals and suggest that fulfilling our purpose is far greater than insuring personal happiness, but is, in fact, of global, even cosmic significance. Along with clear and inspiring prose, the authors offer "exercises" to help each reader effectively analyze their experiences and accurately identify the patterns therein. Given the increased complexity of the world in which we find ourselves, and the choices we see before us as individuals and as a planet, this book could not have come at a better time to help us outfit ourselves for the evolution to come.

About the Author
Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) was one of the great Catholic authors and historians of the twentieth century. Born in France, but raised in Great Britain, he later became a naturalised British subject and served in Parliament from 1906 to 1910. After his brief political career Belloc continued his writing, commenting on a large variety of topics throughout his lifetime.

Prophetic

Rarely have there been two authors as prophetic as G.K. Chesterton and Hillaire Belloc. That their books are still so relevant to so many today is testimony to their enduring greatness. Both these men are thoroughly Catholic authors, and it is this clear headed world view that leads directly to their timelessness.

The Free Press really and truly did shock me. I have known "traditional Catholics" who hate what I, as a Catholic loyal to Vatican II, stand for. Often they quote Belloc or other writers to back up their claims. They often attack ideas like freedom of expression, freedom of religion, etc. etc.

More often than not, when I go to the source materials, I see that the arguments they make rarely hold water. Here too, we see the same. Hillaire Belloc is a great defender of the notion of a free and independent press. He defends advocacy journalism because journals with a clear bias don't pretend to lack bias, so the reader can think about claims critically. He defends FREEDOM to write and think.

He is absolutely prophetic about the profit motive driving modern journalism and the lack of objectivity that causes. One wonders what he would have thought about the blogosphere! Given the content of this book I think he would have been supportive of much it stands for.

This was an amazing read. Heartily recommended.

Reader and Viewer Beware!

Belloc's prognosticative prowess goes full tilt in his 1918 essay on the press. Belloc sees the development of the press as a child of capitalism: by 1918 the establishment press in England is driven by profit instead of truth, and has incredible power to shape policy and control policy makers. Why? Newspapers sell for less than it costs to produce them. The difference is made up by advertising. Thus newspaper owners are beholden to advertisers and are not inclined to run stories counter to their interest. Newspapers can make or break politicians at will. They tend to suppress discussion of real political issues in favor of manufactured ones so they can spin news according to their own interests.

Sound familiar? Many people will find truth in these descriptions even today, with regard to the major news networks. Belloc sees a remedy: an independent free press. Belloc argues that by reading many different perspectives, extreme though they may be, one can distill the real truth of the matter. He observes this is exactly how we develop opinions outside of the mass media--by listening to a variety of people describe the event and assess their credibility, as in a criminal trial for instance. A free press did exist in 1918, but was in its infancy. Thanks to the Internet, we finally have the truly free press that Belloc predicted would flourish.

This tract might make you rethink the idea of digesting a steady diet of network news only. What you get is not necessarily what you see.

The mainstream media and the free media

This is a quite interesting work from the authorship of Hilaire Belloc, which correctly sustains that mainstream media are not nor objective, neither faithful to the truth, but simple tools in the hands of their owners, informing according the conveniences and interests of such owners, professional journalists being no more than mere subjects that must fulfil the orders of their employers, if they desire to keep their jobs.
Without surprise the reader notices that the picture described by Belloc didn't change since 1918, the year the book was written, continuing to be actual about the current mainstream media. In fact, the present situation is even worse than in the time of Belloc, reference media being a mere repetition of each other. Despite the fact they present themselves with different editorial statutes, they always agree in the same essential matters - party system oligarchy, one-worldism, multiculturalism, free immigration and the consequent forced integration -, astonishingly remembering the media of a totalitarian society like the former Soviet Union.
How can we surpass this situation? In this point, Belloc's message is also actual: having recourse to independent or free media not dominated by plutocratic interests, in order to obtain a clearer vision about the events going on the world, complementing the information received from mainstream media or, even, giving that one such mainstream media have hidden. Despite some weaknesses that independent media also suffer, to those who turn to them, a complex whole of events will become perfectly understandable or, at least, much more clear, fighting in that way the occult censorship imposed on and by mainstream media (and, today, we have the internet, a tool unimaginable in the time of Belloc, that is the paradise of free media).

Ilan Fuchs is a research associate in the Hadassah Brandeis Institute Project on Gender, Culture, Religion and Law. His research interests include; Jewish law, history of Jewish Orthodoxy, gender and religion. About the Author

Rae Luskin is a leader in using creative expression to nurture self-worth, resilience, healing, and social change. For over fifteen years, Rae has helped people uncover their talents and passions in order to become confident leaders. She has a bachelor of fine arts degree from Roosevelt University and a master's degree from Loyola University in urban planning. She has been a community activist since she was twenty-three, balancing her artistic side and her desire to improve the lives of women and families.

This is the most beautiful book. Each word is carefully chosen and every sentence is thoughtfully crafted. It is full of joy and color and has lifted my spirits in myriad ways. It inspires me to want to share it with the entire world. Rae shows us through art the power of our stories. I hope her willingness to be vulnerable will inspire others to join her and share their stories too. Imagine the power of a world where people were willing to be truly authentic and share their pain, only to find joy and purpose in the sharing.

I encourage you to give this book as a gift for any and all occasions. It will be one of those that become well worn and loved. And this is why sometimes a book is better than an electronic device. Rae's book deserves to be held.

Not Much Depth and Too Corporate

I was disappointed in The Creative Activist. I have been involved in grassroots organizing for most of my adolescent and adult life and was hoping for something a bit more in-depth and less corporate and mainstream. It didn't reflect the type of organizing that is done in communities, on-the-ground, with few resources and little access to them. I was looking forward to that.

About the Author
Larry Musson entered the US Army March 3, 1969, at Chicago, Illinois. He completed basic training and Advanced Infantry Training at Tiger Land in Fort Polk, LA. He volunteered for airborne training and completed Jump School at Fort Benning, GA, where he received orders for the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the Republic of South Vietnam, earning two overseas bars. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star, Air Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, National Defense Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with four battle stars, Vietnam Civil Action Ribbon, and Vietnam Service Ribbon. He was awarded the Combat Infantry and Parachute Badges. After returning home, he married his wife, Patricia. They have three children and six grandchildren. He worked for Mobil Oil for thirty-five years, retiring from ExxonMobil in 2007. He is a lifelong resident of Illinois, born in Shelbyville, grew up in Elwood where he went to grade school, graduated from Joliet East High School, and attended Joliet Junior College. He is a life member of the 173rd Airborne Association, VFW, and the American Legion.

Fire fight after Fire fight an excellent up close and personal war memoir.

This is a terrific account of close in fire fight after fire fight. The reader travels along with troops on one endless hump after endless hump. The soul crushing heat and humidity , clever booby traps designed to mutilate , Monsoons bringing relentless rain,day and night soaked to the bone. Rain so vicious you can't see or hear the NVA ,5 feet from your face. Giant Tigers stalking our soldiers as they stalk the NVA. All of the above why Leeches feast without end. Close friends mutilated and killed ,why survivors push on ,no time to morn, just stay in the fight.
In closing I was a Marine grunt chasing the VC 1965 / 66 . We carried M14's and never came out of the field never! There was no rear area resupply was a joke. Absolutely no Huey's , our uniforms rotted off and we were expected to fix them with com wire . I guess it was a different war?

Since I was part of that grait 173rd airborn unit in Vietnam and lived that experience I like to congratulate Larry for saying things the way they were and personality I will say this's one of the best books made about Vietnam

Great read

I was impressed by the authors straight forward presentation. Many of the other Vietnam memoirs I have read the author has used to brag about his own great feats, whereas this author presented a good story line that was not a braggers tribute to himself. I was a little disappointed to find out the girlfriend married someone else, but that was quite common and continues to happen all to often to our military people who have to be away on duty.

This is the latest writing of the well known independent philosopher, D. R. Khashaba; independent meaning not university tied. Those who are familiar with his writings will find this to be vintage Khashaba: personal, outspoken, critical of philosophical academia, searching into the depths of reality. As usual, he has no patience for contemporary analytic philosophy, seeing it to be 'dead' to human needs. Larson describes Indians today as postapocalyptic peoples who have already lived through the worst imaginable suffering. By confronting the issues of fear, suppression, and lost identity through literature, Indians may finally move forward to imagine and create for themselves a better future, serving as models for the similarly fractured cultures found throughout the world today.

To educate yourself before reading another Native selection

In order to understand the ramifications of the latest Native American title, author, subject, you must first read this book. Don't hesitate to take notes. There is no substitute for the insight provided by "Captured in the Middle." Your understanding of Native peoples (in addition to that of available Native literature) will only elevate from the minimal plateau supplied by similarly charged works (e.g. Fergus M. Bordewich) to genuine comprehension.
