When I first began researching the story of Hugh Glass, I had no idea where or how long it would take me, or how little I actually knew about this great continent of ours and the people and conditions that once existed here. I knew, or thought I knew, about Indians and buffalo. Having grown up in Alaska, I knew about bears. If anyone had told me that there were once cannibals living in this country, or that a well-known plains tribe once practiced human sacrifice, I wouldn't have believed them. I knew that, later on in the nineteenth century, buffalo hunters had driven that great animal to the edge of extinction, but I never conceived the extent of that butchery. At the time that this story takes place, there were two great herds that roamed the plains, numbering more than twenty-five million strong......

Very hard book to rate

Okay, how do i rate this book? I purchased it because the TRUE story of Hugh Glass is SO amazing I want to learn all I can about it. The book was purchesed with the belief it was non fiction, even the back cover of the book says "Hugh Glass is the incredible true story of one man...". Unfortunately there is a LOT of fiction here. The author, to his credit, states he had no choice but to basically fill in the blanks to make the story flow, but my opinion is that too much was made up. And the made up stuff includes the usual politically correct stuff. You know, native Americans were one with nature, they wasted nothing, they were noble, etc. etc.
Hugh Glass lands in Texas and of course a pretty woman involves herself with him. Hugh Glass lands in the Pawnee camp, the pawnees execute his companion as a sacrifice to the planet Venus and next month Hugh is next! Of course a pretty maiden falls in love with him. While awaiting execution he ADMIRES the pawnees (!!). He gets out of the jam, eventually leaves the Pawnees, winds up in a fur brigade. After his grizzly mauling and abandonment he is travelling alone, the sioux capture him and who is in camp but his former indian lover who was now recatured by the Sioux! Come on....just too much. Now, I have to say as a fiction book I would give it 3 stars or maybe even 4. If you are after a good read go for it. The author does have a nice writing style and his story DOES flow. Sitting around a campfire on a mountain backpack I would like to have the author sitting with me telling stories late into the night. But if you are after more meat and potatoes about Hugh Glass the book adds little if anything. So i took an average and came up with the 2 stars. In any case I strongly request that you read Myers book on Glass first...(Pirate Pawnee Mountain Man) so you have a baseline on the Glass story. Myers book, written decades ago, is still the best source out there. I had hoped B. Bradley's book would add any info learned in the last 30 or 40 years, unfortunately it didn't but perhaps nothing more has been learned?. The Hugh Glass story should be required teaching in our schools. I mean, we read about Odysseus in Homers book, a story about a 20 year journey home. We have our own Odyseus, he lived 175 years ago and we can retrace a lot of what he did. His name is Hugh Glass. He is our own.

A very good read

I imagine few lives have contained so many varied life threatening experiences as Hugh Glass', and few more deserving of legendary status. As sailor, reluctant pirate, honorary Pawnee and fur trapper he time and again escapes death from pirates, cannibals, human sacrifice, Indian ambush, grizzly mauling and frozen wilderness. His fending for himself while dragging his torn broken body hundreds of miles after the grizzly mauling being the most miraculous. The author admittedly takes some liberties in creating a narrative that is much more readable than any recitation of the facts could be. But the essence and significant events are all based on well documented facts. It's a very readable telling of an amazing story.

Shon provides an excellent guide on how to read journal articles. The reading code sheet helps to demystify the role of journal articles as proposals to knowledge and journals as forums for debate. I have used the book over the last five years with my students (many of whom are international and studying in a second language) with great success. The book has helped students to develop their critical thinking, reading and writing skills and when it comes to writing a dissertation they have used the code sheet in their own writing. This is an excellent ‘how-to’ book on the skill of reading and writing critical literature reviews. Its practical guidance is offered in clear and accessible ways. About the Author

Phillip C. Shon received his M.A. and Ph.D. in criminal justice from the University of Illinois (Chicago); he also holds an M.A. in linguistics and a B.A. in philosophy from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago). He is currently an associate professor of criminology at University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in homicide, criminological theory, and integrating projects (capstone course). He is the author of Language and Demeanor in Police-Citizen Encounters. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 2008; Respect, Defense, and Self-Identity: Profiling Parricide in Nineteenth-Century America, 1852-1899. New York: Peter Lang, 2014. He is a co-editor (with Dragan Milovanovic) of Serial Killers: Understanding Lust Murders. (eds). Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 2006. For fun, he lifts weights and watches Asian gangster movies (not at the same time). He still has aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler and a long-haul trucker someday.

Excellent Content - BUT less moving than the 1st Edition.

This is a must have book for any student needing to write social science papers and any instructor who assigns those papers. My only complaint - I prefer the first edition. The important how to content is still in this edition, but I thought it was edited down too much. The first edition (the one with the green cover) has more depth. For example, the first edition has a graphic and moving story about the author working at a gas station as a student and having to clean poo off the bathroom walls. He uses that experience to explain why quality academic writing is important to him. To me, this 2nd edition is a good how to book, while the 1st edition was a how to book that demonstrated the practical intersection of social science and social justice.

I was completely fascinated when I first heard about Shannon Conley, a Colorado, white, Christian teen--the quintessential "girl next door" who decided to become an ISIS bride. Converting at age 17 she fell under the influence of Internet jihadi ideologues--Anwar al Awlaki among them. We droned him in 2011, but he lives on via the Internet, inspiring countless acts of terrorism from beyond the grave, including hers. 
I was intrigued with how Shannon Conley apparently fell in love with her ISIS boyfriend and what compelled her to consider becoming his bride and joining ISIS. I could imagine that a young nurse's aid who was praised by her ISIS boyfriend could have visions of glory as a medic to the cadres--moving from bedpans to the battlefield. And love makes us all do crazy things and take risks... I was also horrified that she openly admitted to FBI agents that she had studied how to and seriously considered launching a VIP attack right inside the United States--a "stay and act in place" attack that ISIS is now getting well known for.   
Unable to forget Shannon Conley I first searched for all the material I could find on her case and I attempted to interview Shannon, her family and her lawyer.  Unable to gather enough information to write a nonfiction book I couldn't let it rest so I decided to take what I know about terrorism from the more than four hundred cases of terrorists, their family members and close associates I've interviewed around the world and put together a composite story matching and inspired by hers.  The result is Bride of ISIS.

The novelization route strikes right at the reader’s heart and enhances understanding of the practical and psychological process of radicalization.”

A decent read.

This book was actual a 3 1/2 star. Wasn't exactly sure where this was going, but had a good feeling where it would end. The factual material is very accurate and adds the depth to the story. In the same token, it became too predictable. There are things I've would have changed to give a false direction and to build up mystery. One such thing I would have added would be Sophia trying to recruit friends to go to Syria and become brides, and give some play to that. Even though I can see this happening, it would be a rare case I think...I hope. Definitely worth the time to explore.

Growing up wasn't easy for Aron Seaborn, the second oldest son of Northampton county sharecroppers. Despite an intense desire to attend school, Aron was relegated to child servitude to help sustain his growing family. At the age of six, Aron had to forego reading, writing and arithmetic to plow a mule alongside his older brother and father in the menacing elements of the North Carolina summers and winters. He quickly learned that survival trumped studies. Subsequently, the lessons he learned as a child were a result of the harsh realities of segregated life in a small North Carolina township. He didn't go to school. He never learned to read or write. Having completed only kindergarten, Aron vowed to one day live a better life and finish what he started. At the age of sixteen, he was given an opportunity that forever altered his life. He went from poverty to the working class. Going back to school took a backseat yet again to paying taxes and rent. In his late twenties, Aron started his own businesses, which he operated successfully more than thirty years, without ever knowing how to read or write. The Mourners' Bench takes you back in time and gives you an intimate look into the life of a man who, despite hardships and disadvantages, achieves a modicum of success many learned individuals fall short of. While Aron's life is not unique in the sense that many black men in mid-century America were illiterate, it is unique in lieu of the fact that he achieved an impressive level of success without traditional education. He learned at the hand of a mule, bad decisions and his father's thick leather belt. The Mourners' Bench is a rich, sometimes painful history lesson, with harsh realities interwoven between the pages. It is a delicate read. The author's naivety shows up without expressed permission--his anger never acknowledged but acutely sensed. But his life is also a master class in redemption, joyfully and triumphantly played out chapter by chapter. A must read for all ages.

Outstanding!

This book is an excellent example of how one can overcome adversity and how to succeed despite any obstacles thrown your way. It is a master class in life, forgiveness, and in one's ability to persevere--to never lose hope. I loved Aron's intimate portrayal of those areas of his life that one can learn from and grow. What a beautiful story. Highly recommend!

essential book for anyone studying economics/public policy

I found this book by accident! And it saved my (academic) life, by giving me a clear, economics-grounded understanding of: -why markets fail -why governments fail too -what the alternatives are for correcting those failures (policy options) -how to do a cost/benefit analysis of the different policy options -how to structure a policy analysis -how to write it up and present it in a way that makes things happen.
Whether you work for an advocacy organization, a politician, a government agency, a corporation, or are simply interested in better understanding why governments intervene in the 'free market', this book will be a great help to you, too!

The best book available on policy analysis

This is the 5th edition of the authors' classic text on policy analysis. It is a challenging textbook and it helps to have some knowledge of microeconomics when working through a few of the early chapters. But it deftly combines the economic analysis of policy with time-tested guidelines on the more general practice of policy analysis. I use it every year in the policy analysis course I teach and the students always give it excellent reviews.

a well-organized introduction to policy studies

Weimer's "Policy Analysis -3rd edition" provides a well-organized, widely-covered, and easily-understandable introduction to policy analysis. Although we have to seek for other materials for an in-depth analysis of some topics, the book helps us start with Public Policy, Policy Analysis, and even economic policies. This is especially good for undergraduate level, since this provides how to study, investigate, and write policy paper.
