About the Author
Betty Jones grew up in the California Foster Care system as a ward of the court. Betty Jones is an alumni of Shasta College and CSU East Bay. Betty have advocated for disadvantaged youth/adults since the age of 14 when she spoke publicly about her abuse and her experiences in Foster Care.

A must read!

This an extremely heartfelt and insightful account of the life of an abused child. I'm touched by the author's sentiment and impressed with her ability to maintain a factual telling of her story. I would encourage others to read and spread awareness of the atrocities that the most vulnerable members of our society face. Anxious for the sequel to continue getting to know this amazingly strong child!

A valuable perspective

I'm a foster parent, my phone within reach, currently waiting for a child who needs my safe home and love. I'm grateful to have come across this book. "Through the Eyes of a Child' is an apt title, as the author tells her story simply, how life was, how she felt and interpreted her experiences. I was afraid to start it, wondering if I would find a book so full of anger and pain that I wouldn't be able to finish, and would sadly and guiltily set it aside. Instead, I read it through in one sitting, turning my light out in the early hours of the morning. I wondered, how is she not filled with anger and hate? What resilience, determination and compassion she has to come through these events and turn back to tell her story, to speak for other children in danger, in secret.
Even in her simple telling, Ms. Jones highlights the complexities of child welfare. When she lived in poverty with her father, she was malnourished but loved. When eating well at her mother's, she was neglected and abused, living with daily terror that resulted in PTSD symptoms- at 10 years old, waking in a sweat to get a knife from the kitchen, certain her abuser had his hands on her, was lurking in the closet, was about to attack. Poverty and malnutrition were visible. For years, the abuse was not.
Why didn't she tell anyone? Weren't social workers monitoring this family? How does this happen? I too, live in Northern California. As a child, I was blissfully ignorant of molestation and abuse. In fact, let's be honest, I am still ignorant. I trusted my parents to heal my every wound and soothe every fear. But what if my parent hadn't cared? (Was she overburdened of life? Had she never known any different? Was she lost to an addiction?) What if, from my earliest childhood, I had spent the days outdoors, on my own, interacting with the shady characters in my neighborhood? No one asked, when she came home, what she had done, who she had seen, why she was quiet, why she was frightened. And no one knew. People called her family "trash" and she knew what they meant. But some things, spoken out loud, cause feelings of shame too great for a small child on her own to bear.
Read this book to comprehend the perspective of the neglected and abused child. Take a deep breath, start reading and incite your compassion. That we may more carefully watch, more thoughtfully help and more effectively protect the child in danger among us.

This is an excellent read of resilience and determination of a child growing up, fighting with all of the struggles and hardships.
