Lying at the centre of a tumultuous region, the Central African Republic and its turbulent history have often been overlooked. Democracy, in any kind of a meaningful sense, has eluded the country. Since the mid-1990s, army mutinies and serial rebellion in CAR have resulted in two major successful coups. Over the course of these upheavals, the country has become a laboratory for peacebuilding initiatives, hosting a two-decade-long succession of UN and regional peacekeeping, peacebuilding and special political missions.

Drawing together the foremost experts on the Central African Republic, this much-needed volume provides the first in-depth analysis of the country’s recent history of rebellion, instability, and international and regional intervention.

Review
“Bringing together the most prominent experts, this book provides a unique, compelling and definitive analysis of the deeply rooted political crisis in the CAR. With no issue left untouched, it is essential reading for anyone interested in, or dealing with the current conflict.”
(Koen Vlassenroot, Ghent University)

“This is the essential book on CAR. Tatiana Carayannis and Louisa Lombard have assembled the scholars and analysts who know most about this important but under-researched country, and have produced the authoritative volume on its history, society and politics.”
(Alex de Waal, author of Darfur and Advocacy in Conflict)

“Lombard and Carayannis definitively depict what Africans call 'the heart of the continent' not as a blank spot on colonial maps, nor as an aberrant absence or failure of contemporary national and international governance, but rather as a complex 'hive' of geopolitical, cultural, and economic rivalries and alliances key to Africa's prosperity and stability in coming decades. It is a boldly executed and timely corrective to much recent media and policy analysis on civil conflict and prospects for sustainable peace in the Central African Republic.” (Rebecca Hardin, University of Michigan)

About the Author
Tatiana Carayannis is deputy director of the Social Science Research Council’s Conflict Prevention and Peacer Forum and leads the forum’s Africa programs. Louisa Lombard is assistant professor of anthropology at Yale University.

As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

About the Author

Described as one of the most influential figures in human history, Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist who wrote extensively on the benefits of socialism and the flaws of free-market capitalism. His most notable works, Das Kapital and The Communist Manifesto (the latter of which was co-authored by his collaborator Friedrich Engels), have since become two of history s most important political and economic works. Marxism the term that has come to define the philosophical school of thought encompassing Marx s ideas about society, politics and economics was the foundation for the socialist movements of the twentieth century, including Leninism, Stalinism, Trotskyism, and Maoism. Despite the negative reputation associated with some of these movements and with Communism in general, Marx s view of a classless socialist society was a utopian one which did not include the possibility of dictatorship. Greatly influenced by the philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, Marx wrote in radical newspapers from his young adulthood, and can also be credited with founding the philosophy of dialectical materialism. Marx died in London in 1883 at the age of 64.

An excellent edition of a political classic
By Robert Moore
My five star rating is based on the quality of this handsome edition of one of the classics of political philosophy. Classics of this magnitude, whether Adam Smith's THE WEALTH OF NATIONS, Tocqueville's DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, or THE FEDERALIST PAPERS have achieved a status that makes the assigning of a rating rather silly. Regardless of one's feelings about Marxism or Communism, a work of such gigantic influence is of such a status that rating it is almost silly. It is one of the constitutive artifacts of our culture.

The particular edition I am reviewing is the recent reissue on Verso with an introduction by Eric Hobsbawm. There are a host of editions of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, and virtually any of them will do the trick, but I very much enjoyed this edition, partly for the handsome jacket and binding, and partly for the superb intro by Hobsbawm. It is not a new translation, and indeed it isn't clear that there will ever be much of a demand for a new translation. The MANIFESTO was first published in 1848 and this translation in 1888. Moore's translation is the standard one for a simple reason: Engels examined it closely and helped Moore in editing the final draft of the translation.

Although I had read a fair amount in the writings of Marx over the years, this was my first time to read the work from cover to cover. I found it surprising on several levels. First, it was a much easier to read work than I had anticipated. This is upon reflection hardly surprising. The work was intended as a pamphlet for the masses, and it was essential that it be as understandable as possible. Also, the concepts and ideas articulated in these pages have become a part of the intellectual landscape of Western civilization. A host of ideas are commonplace, even among those who do not consider themselves sympathetic towards Marxism. It has become a commonplace of the past decade that Communism and Democracy clashed, and Communism lost. But the fact is that Marxist thought has exerted a massive influence on the way we view the world, and many things introduced by Marx are now central constituents of our world. Just look at the way we write history now. Before Marx a detailed consideration of the economic factors in an era was unheard of; now it is considered essential.

As a credo, I find myself conflicted over its contents, just as I always find myself conflicted in reading Marx. Marx's analyses of the dynamics governing capitalist society have always struck me as dead on. No one writes more presciently or timelessly about the structures of exploitation that are inherent in capitalism. Nonetheless, I find his positive proposals as to how to transcend capitalism to be untenable, and the post-capitalist world he describes to be undesirable. The best way to express this is that I find Marx the critic to be convincing and impressive, but Marx the visionary to be irrelevant. I want us to pay attention to Marx's critiques, but not to his proposals for change.

I was delighted in reading the book to find the word "highfalutin" in the text. The world seems somehow to be a more charming place for the unexpected presence of such a light-hearted word in the midst of a serious text.

Though listed as the work of Marx and Engels, Marx was the primary creator of the work. He also did the bulk of the writing. It isn't sufficiently commented on what a beautiful writer Marx could be when he tried. Too often he adopts the try academic style begun with Christian Wolff and continued by Kant, Fichte, and Hegel. But a host of exquisite phrases such as "All that is solid melts into air" shows that Marx could turn a phrase when conviction didn't prevent him.

Everyone interested in political thought or modern history needs to read this book. Its influence--its ongoing influence--is incalculable. Its critique of the exploitative nature of capitalism remains astonishingly relevant. And its predictions about the future course of history, even if no longer inspiring or convincing, are crucial to grasp if one is to understand many of the political impulses of the past one hundred and fifty years.

A work of historic significance
By Tom Munro
I remember reading the Communist Manifesto thirty years ago when I was at University. At the time it seemed tedious and impenetrable. Recently I re-read it and was amazed at how clear it seemed and what an effective piece of propaganda it was and how clear was the writing.
Reading through the program one realises the distance that has been travelled since it was written. Some of the major planks are the Abolition of Child Labour, the creation of a progressive income tax and Free Education.
Perhaps one of its major weaknesses is that Marx was a person who tended to carry a grudge. Thus a third of it is devoted to attacks on some of his contemporary enemies and rivals. These disputes have so long passed into history they are incomprehensible.
The modern notion of Communism of course stems not from Marx but from Stalin and Lenin. Marx wrote at a time when the only democratic country in Europe was France. England, Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire all had limited franchises and Russia was of course an autocracy. One of the major reforms he battled for was the introduction of democracy. It was his belief that the implementation of his program would flow from that.
Following Marx's death his movement evolved into a parliamentary movement the Social Democratic Party. Communism as a modern political phenomena dates from 1917 when splinter Social Democrats followed Russia's lead and developed small conspiratorial parties who were committed to the seizure of power by force. Stalinism is an offshoot of this system and is a form of state terror aimed at ensuring the survival of unpopular anti democratic regimes.
Reading through the Manifesto one can see the basis of a system which was not only an effective for mobilising political movements, but came to influence intellectual debate for the next century. There is also perhaps a sense of a naive optimism which could not contemplate the sorts of disasters which were to occur over the next hundred years.

Good writing, BAD edition!
By Daniel Delaney
Calling this edition the "Collectors Edition" is an egregious misnomer. While the binding is good, that's the only thing positive that can be said about this edition. This "publisher" apparently has no editor and no one who understands a thing about professional typesetting. It looks as if it was typed out in MS Word. Paragraphs are indented a full half inch, AND the paragraphs have entire blank lines between them. The first half of the book uses straight quotes and two hyphens for dashes. The second half of the book switches to curly quotes, but puts spaces around full em dashes. Over and over again the apostrophe of possessives have spaces before the 's' (as in "Marx' s").

I was so disgusted with the poor quality typesetting that I returned it. If you're looking for a nice, high quality hardcover of the Manifesto, go for the Barnes & Noble edition. They at least have professional typesetters.

To the "publishers": I highly recommend you get yourselves a copy of Jan Tschichold's _The Form of the Book_ (you can get it here on Amazon). Please learn how to typeset a book properly before printing any more books.

FEAR The People: The action plan to enforce our Constitution, Bring Congress Home, and restore American life (Volume 2), by David M. Zunig

The time for talk ended long ago. Tired of marching, contacting corrupt D.C. politicians, and working half the year to pay for your D.C. masters to live large...of having to fund abortion, sexual perversion, illegal aliens, and Islamic jihad, destroying our civilization in one generation? If so, AmericaAgain! is for you. To finally establish active popular sovereignty, AmericaAgain! will first ratify the long-forgotten original First Amendment passed in 1789 by Congress and already ratified by 11 states. This reform will open the door for 6,400 new citizen-statesmen in Congress, to replace 435 corrupt incumbents in the House. The first official action of this new House of Representatives will be our Bring Congress Home Act, to break up D.C. organized crime, making Congress work from their home districts with very limited staffs, only one office each, and they will be limited to two terms. Since they will only represent a maximum of 50,000 people (1/15 of their present kingdoms), we will pay them half the salary they have set for themselves -- and we will end all congressional benefits. We want citizen-statesmen, not fat careerists. Together, this three-prong FEAR The People™ project will turn the tables on Washington D.C. forever. Then, AmericaAgain! will help the American People take back all we have lost to D.C. organized crime in 154 years, by forcing 21 other reform laws through Congress. How? Read the book to find out. This is a detailed plan of action for us to do what our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents failed to do…the duty of popular sovereignty. Oversee our federal servants, on permanent probation. This peaceful, practical, perpetual mechanism allows us to finally liberate ourselves from D.C. organized crime. A new way of life that We The People will forge for our servants — rather than continuing to live in the chains they have forged for us.

If you are tired of reading the vast majority of books out there that do a great job of describing all the corruption in DC but provide nothing in the way of specific action steps that can be taken to fix the problems, then this workbook is for you. While David does spend some time on describing the problems, by far the majority of this workbook is focused on describing the action plan that the remnant in this country that still care can take to completely take back control from DC. The plan he describes is like no other you have heard of and once you understand it you won't understand why we haven't already done this!! The time has come for us to take bold and decisive action in this country before it is too late. This is not a pregnancy guide book. This is a review of a famous pregnancy guide book. Not a real book.
By A. King
This is not the actual book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel. The item being sold is a review of that book. If you are looking for the book which is listed as one of the "Most influential books of the past 25 years" this is not it. This is an overview of that book.

My review of this review of a book is that it does not offer enough information to be helpful to expectant mothers and fathers.

~~ Information for the expecting expectant ~~
By Richard and Liz
Been there, done that as they say so I was rather interested to read this summary (think DETAILED review) on the full version of the book by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel. From the brief two page overview we learn that the original book covers the time before you even try to conceive to six weeks after the birth. What should you avoid? Some suggestions are caffeine, alcohol, emptying the cat litter box and radio frequencies from electronic devices. Who are Heidi and Sharon along with Charles Lockwood? What qualified them to write what appears to be the fourth, updated edition of this book?

There are nine 'Key Takeaways' in this summary. Each one is discussed in relative detail of approximately 1 1/2 to 2 pages each. We are reminded that each pregnancy etc. is different so although there are general guidelines, they are not definitive. Don't believe everything you see in the movies! Key Takeaway 7 discusses working whilst pregnant acknowledging the fact that the US "has some of the most minimal parental leave mandates in the industrialized world".

How does your pregnancy affect those around you? How do you survive complications or loss of your baby? The "feel" I got from this summary is that this book is mainly about the woman and what she experiences. Although there are some illustrations provided in the original book it does not come across as a book focusing on the development of the baby growing inside you.

The original is described by Eureka as the tone being "so casual as to be cute, often using pregnancy-specific metaphors, slang, puns an cliches". Plenty of scientific evidence is presented "but it does not cite those studies in the text or include references to any other material". Eureka says that "the reader has no way of determining what factoid is based on recent research and what might be outdated" etc.

A well-written summary that you will give you a great overview of this non-fiction book. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

What to expect when she's expecting.
By Ryan J. Dejonghe
Every woman on earth buys WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING and reads it cover-to-cover. Their husbands, boyfriends, surrogates--whatever--never have a chance. In other words: they're DOOMED!

Well, not necessarily. This summary may help out. No, the summary won't tell you how many bananas to eat at what time of day, or which Whole Foods(TM) multivitamin to purchase during a specific trimester, but really, who cares?

The point of this summary is to save your relationship. The summary is a minute worth of reading (you can get through that between Call of Duty games), there are then bullet points for the key takeaways, and each takeaway has a follow-up page or two summary. So, while you are fragging the enemy or ducking for cover, you can sympathetically respond, "oh yes, honey, you're right. You are going through changes. How can I help?" You'll also know not to bring that six-pack home, but drink it before entering the house.

And, yes, this summary gives you warnings about where your significant other is getting her crazy ideas. When she is talking about how fat she is getting, or how you shouldn't hold your phone too close to her belly, you can say, "yes", because you've read this summary. You know that the book has some rubbish ideas, and that your wife/girlfriend--whatever--is beautiful, just the way she is (and is becoming).

Spend the few bucks. Save your marriage.

China and the Developing World: Beijing's Strategy for the Twenty-first Century (East Gate Books)From Routledge

China's relationship with the developing world is a fundamental part of its larger foreign policy strategy. Sweeping changes both within and outside of China and the transformation of geopolitics since the end of the cold war have prompted Beijing to reevaluate its strategies and objectives in regard to emerging nations.Featuring contributions by recognized experts, this is the first full-length treatment of China's relationship with the developing world in nearly two decades. Section one provides a general overview and framework of analysis for this important aspect of Chinese policy. The chapters in the second part of the book systematically examine China's relationships with Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The book concludes with a look into the future of Chinese foreign policy.

China and the Developing World book review
By Gregorio Savio
The "sleeping dragon" has wakened up and is becoming a major political and economic force in regional and world affairs. Chinese diplomacy is signing investment agreements, building roads, forming strategic partnerships and gaining membership in regional and international organizations. Developing Countries are the favorite target for Beijing policy, seen both as extremely important sources of energy and raw materials, and as supporters to its multilateral approach to international affairs. China's foreign policy towards the "Third World" shifted, beginning from the early `80s, from being political-ideological to pragmatic-economic aimed. Developing countries represent for China many opportunities: sources of oil and raw materials, new markets for its products and possible allies in the United Nations and in the Taiwan's issue. This book provide a broad but still precise view of the strategies and accomplishments of China's diplomacy toward the Developing World, also mentioning the challenges that Beijing will have to face in this century and the implications for U.S.
SUMMARY OF THE BOOK
The book is divided in three sections and eight chapters. The first section and chapter is an historical introduction to China's interaction with the Developing World, from the Xia Dynasty (2206-1766 BCE) to the present. Adhering to the Confucian value system, during the Imperial era Chinese leaders focused their energies and strategies internally to secure their rule also because China was generally self-sufficient in terms of natural resources. Its self-image was one of a moral, cultural and technological superior country posed at the center of the world, as its name suggests: "the Middle Kingdom". All the foreigners were considered barbarians. The first interactions with the exterior world were obviously with the surrounding strategic periphery, mostly in the west to safeguard the Silk Road. When China was dealing with internal troubles, usually during a period of dynastic consolidation or dissolution, Chinese leaders took an essentially defensive position to hold off border threats and challenges. When stronger, they attacked the nomad barbarians and expanded the strategic periphery. In this way Chinese domain tended to expand and contract throughout history, making historic nation a geographically difficult concept to define, also because Chinese identity is based on culture rather than ethnicity. What defined a periphery state autonomous or tributary related was the military strength of the barbarians.
During the Ming period (1368-1644 CE) China began to isolate itself from the wider world outside its immediate periphery, complacent of its superiority and conditioned by antimilitaristic Confucian principles. The Empire weakened both internally and externally, particularly in terms of military power, letting the European powers and Japan conquer parts of it and compelling China to sign a series of "unequal treaties" starting from the Treaty of Nanjing after its defeat in the Opium Wars (1839-1842). This period, until the end of World War II, is considered by Chinese the "century of humiliation" that fundamentally altered China's perception of any kind of self-superiority.
With Mao's victory in the civil war and the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), China opened a new phase in its external relations based on equalitarian ideology, focusing not only with U.S. and U.S.S.R. but also with underdeveloped and developing countries, supporting their struggles for independency. At the Bandung Conference in 1955, a meeting of 29 Asian and African states, most of which were newly independent, Premier Zhou Enlai enshrined the "Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence". Mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, non-aggression, non-interference in internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence led to the creation of the "Non Aligned Movement" in which Third World nations refused to take one side in the bipolar international system headed by the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
In the 1960's China sponsored the Third World radicalism, sending arms, money, military instructors and economic aid to communist and independency insurgents in many African and South-Asian countries. Although gradually reentering the community of nations, replacing the Republic of China (ROC, in Taiwan) in the U.N. in 1971 and opening a new era in relations with the U.S. in 1972, China continued to promote anti-imperialist solidarity and economic aid based on ideology. In the late seventies, realized the economic catastrophe of the Cultural Revolution, Deng Xiaoping reformed Chinese policies to a more market-oriented economy that is still within a rigid political framework under Communist Party control. The reforms replaced collectivization of Chinese agriculture with privatization of farmlands, increased the responsibility of local authorities and industry managers, allowed a wide variety of small-scale enterprises to flourish, and promoted foreign investment. Foreign policy was now applied according to practical considerations of economic development and technology acquisition, without regard to a nation's political system or ideology. Nonetheless China continued providing military aid to Third World nations to gain capital for internal investments, buy influence, and demonstrate its continued fealty and leadership in the developing world. Pragmatism is the today priority because the Middle Kingdom is not anymore self-sufficient and has a survivor need for raw materials and energy resources owned for the most part by the developing countries.
All this long history is very important to understand the contemporary political leaders' frame of mind, reflecting a tradition of deception and a highly developed sense of political strategy to be able to gain advantage over rivals.
The second chapter examines China's post cold war strategy in Africa. Until Mao's death the main strategy toward the continent was conditioned by national security interests and the fear of a Soviet threat to China. Local fights (in Angola for example) far from the Middle Kingdom were encouraged as a diversion to keep Moscow's forces dispersed. Africa is now a component in China's larger strategy to cultivate political support, acquire energy and natural resources, secure its commercial interests and support its claims to Taiwan. Political support to China's policies is granted by $5 billion loans over three years and $5 billion China-Africa development fund that Beijing distributed in November 2006. The United Nations is the very important forum where China enjoys the support of African nations for its "one-China" policy and they can count over its veto power on censures concerning human rights violations (Sudan i.e.). China's strategy to securing raw materials and oil supplies is to gain control of African natural resources at its source to not be menaced by market prices shocks. Beijing methods to achieve African elites' benevolence are pragmatic as organizing cultural meetings, medical cooperation, tourism, bringing African students to China, agricultural and technical assistance, investment and economic support, military patronage and peacekeeping, and diplomatic support. U.S. and China have competing interests for energy and other natural resources and divergent views on democratization and human rights, but none of them wants Africa to become a region of aggressive competition.
The third chapter is dedicated to China's emergence in Central Asia. China has strategic and diplomatic interests here that play into China's overall foreign policy, such as providing a potential alternative to the Russian dominated Collective Security Treaty Organization (a collective defense institution for many Central Asian states); establishing stronger ties with its neighbors to counter in the long term a potentially hostile United States presence on its western borders. China also seeks to safeguard the stability of borders negotiated after the fall of the U.S.S.R. and has focused on preventing any external influence and support for Uyghur separatists in Xinjiang. Chinese economic and trade interests in the region, especially the development of energy resources, are also becoming increasingly important to its internal economic development. However, the U.S. and Russia still provide the largest amount of development assistance, financial aid and security assistance in the region and the gap that China is trying to fill is still pretty wide.
Chapter four present the Chinese interests in South America, focusing over relations with Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Cuba, Venezuela and control of the Panama Canal. China and Latin America have complementary economic structures. South American natural resources are vital to China's booming economy and Chinese purchases and investments will very much help economic development in the area. The Middle Kingdom looks to Latin America for supply of oil, iron ore, copper and other raw materials, along with foodstuffs such as soybeans, grain and beef meat. Chinese leaders have emphasized summit diplomacy and "win-win" relations to cultivate local support for expanding economic relations and market penetration of Chinese cheap goods. China's strategic moves and economic diplomacy will inevitably present challenges to the United States, also given that anti-Washington sentiment have increased in the region.
Chapter five explains China's interests and strategy in the Middle East and Arab countries. The main interest is obviously the stability of the region to not put in danger the extensive oil supplies. Furthermore, the M.E. and Arab world are important markets for Chinese products and services, and the Chinese government counts on the region to continue supporting the one-China policy related to Taiwan. To promote its interests, China has adopted strategies such as the use of diplomacy to help Chinese businesses make inroads to the oil industry and markets, the adaptation of an offend-no-one approach to regional politics in order to maintain a friendly environment to Chinese business interests, and the use of soft-power resources to cultivate friendship also in the long term. But China does not have the resources to maintain stability in the area to secure its strategically economic interests, and it has to rely on the United States as the primary force for peace. That is why a priority is not to confront with the U.S. over regional issues.
Chapter six and seven deal with China's strategies and relations with South and South-East Asia. In South Asia the main actor that China faced is India. In the past they had prolonged territorial disputes that also drove to a war in 1962 together with the Tibet issue. Since the sign of the "Agreement to Maintain Peace and Tranquility along the Line of Actual Control" in 1993, political relations have been distensile and the remaining border disputes are not worth of war. Despite official statements that India has accepted China's sovereignty over the Tibet, the Tibetan issue remains contentious because of the spiritual and political influence of the Dalai Lama residing in Dharamsala, India. Anyway China is warming up relations with the subcontinent, fearing an U.S.-India alliance to contain it. China and India have growing economic and trade ties that contribute to an improving security relationship, but their status of cheap producers is also making them economic competitors. Southeast Asia is considered the back yard by Chinese leaders, and the Middle Empire has always had a big influence and power of intervention over these countries' affairs. In the present China is focusing on its internal economic development, trying to secure access to raw materials in Southeast Asia such as oil, natural gas, rubber, and tin. For these reasons ASEAN nations are worried about a return to a colonial economic relationship with Beijing. China's future military modernization, especially if it is combined with more threats against Taiwan, are likely to make it more difficult to believe that Beijing has only peaceful intensions in the region. At the moment the U.S. and Japan remain better positioned to wield considerably greater influence in Southeast Asia, thanks to higher trade and investments levels. Anyway China's increasing influence in the area is a challenge that United States and their allied will need to confront in the next decade.
The eight and last chapter is devoted to the evaluation of China's strategy toward the whole developing world, pointing out that Beijing new diplomacy is more proactive and flexible. It has embraced multilateralism and confident building measures to mitigate security concerns, it has identified several states and regional organizations as strategic partners, it has provided economic assistance strategically to further bilateral relationships and it has emphasized and cultivated soft power.
The main purpose of the book is to respond to four sets of questions. Each author aims to identify how China defines and pursues its interests in the region under question, which methods and assets are brought to bear to achieve policy objectives, identify relative successes in meeting policy goals, and examine the implications of Chinese foreign policy for other regional and global actors (mostly the U.S.). The book is very effective and explicative in exposing the different issues China is managing, and definitely maintains what it promises in the introduction. I found very interesting the shift from an ideology based foreign policy to an economic based and the major concern Chinese diplomacy has to secure raw materials supplies. It seems that every diplomatic effort is made in synergy to ensure this goal. I also find the book complete and exhaustive in presenting China's strategies for the developing countries in the twenty-first century even if everything is presented in almost 250 pages.

RECEPTION, CRITIQUE AND RELEVANCE OF THE BOOK
Since this book has been edited in August 2007 I did not find any exhaustive review. Anyway the few comments that I found concord over considering it the first comprehensive treatment of contemporary Chinese diplomacy's strategy in the developing world. The commentators underline the relevance of China's growing use of soft power to win friends in key emerging regions and the comprehensiveness of data presented, together with the sharp analysis provided. I agree with these comments and I think that the book is covering the lack of knowledge about Chinese strategies present in the Asian field of studies. It is well written, easily understandable and full of profound insights. The division in chapters associated to a particular region, and the chapters' internal schematization of the intensions, actions and implication of China's policies make it a perfect manual for International Relations students and readers.
The authors are not providing predictions of future China's effect on the international system, but they depict probable scenarios based on the analysis of present policies and strategies. It is important to notice that they do not consider China's emergence in the recent years coming merely at U.S. interests' expenses. They see the Middle Kingdom both as a challenge and an opportunity for the international community. They do not have a closed view of power as a zero-sum game, but they consider also the possibility of win-win relations.
If I may find a weakness in the book, I think that the authors should have dedicate a more detailed section to expose the psychology behind Chinese leaders and their millenary tradition to deception's practices in carrying out foreign policies. As Mei Yaochen, a commentator of Sun Tzu's Art of War stated "Without deception you cannot carry out strategy, without strategy you cannot control the opponent". The strong insights that the book displays are many: the already mentioned structural organization of the book, the view of China's foreign policy as a quest for strategic and economic influence, the centrality in Chinese interests of acquiring raw materials and energy resources, the preeminence in leaders' worries of borders' security and internal and external stability, the use of soft power and regional cultural and economic organization to build confidence about China's aims and actions, the recognition that China's trade and investments are in the developing countries are devoted to allow Beijing meet its domestic needs, the Chinese strategically avoid to directly confront the U.S. and the seek to expand Chinese influence in the Middle East and the Arab world, the acknowledgment of the progress made by India and China toward building a strategic partnership and the recognition of an existing structured Chinese foreign relations agenda for the developing country that U.S. does not seem to have at the moment. This volume places the recent developments of China's diplomacy in the broader context of its overall foreign policy and history of relationships with developing countries.
The book is also very relevant to the field of United States foreign policy. Every author addressed the following questions: "What impact does Beijing recent engagement have on U.S. interests? And what impact does it have on the preservation or evolution of international norms and institutions?"
As the major world's actor, the United States are always considered and mentioned along the chapters and Chinese policies always take in consideration Washington policies and interests in the different regions. Even tough the top front target of China's diplomatic agenda is to secure resources to develop economic evolving national interests; China does not want to confront the U.S., at least in the present period. The book also presents suggestions for American foreign policy, responding to Chinese protagonism. The authors analyze American and Chinese interests pointing out where they collide or they coincide, very often advising U.S. to pay closer attention to the development of China's relations with the developing world. The Middle Kingdom has many chances to become the second major world power in the twenty-first century, and U.S. diplomats and politicians need to keep constantly an eye on its moves.

A Critical History of Greek Philosophy, by W. T. Stace

GREEK PHILOSOPHY - A Critical History of Greek Philosophy by W. T. Stace - This book contains the substance, and for the most part the words, of a course of public lectures delivered during the first three months of 1919. The original division into lectures has been dropped, the matter being more conveniently redivided into chapters. The audience to whom the lectures were delivered was composed of members of the general public, and not only of students. For the most part they possessed no previous knowledge of philosophy. Hence this book, like the original lectures, assumes no previous special knowledge, though it assumes, of course, a state of general education in the reader. Technical philosophical terms are carefully explained when first introduced; and a special effort has been made to put philosophical ideas in the clearest way possible. But it must be remembered that many of the profoundest as well as the most difficult of human conceptions are to be found in Greek philosophy. Such ideas are difficult in themselves, however clearly expressed. No amount of explanation can ever render them anything but difficult to the unsophisticated mind, and anything in the nature of "philosophy made easy" is only to be expected from quacks and charlatans. Greek philosophy is not, even now, antiquated. It is not from the point of view of an antiquary or historian that its treasures are valuable. We are dealing here with living things, and not with mere dead things--not with the dry bones and debris of a bygone age. And I have tried to lecture and write for living people, and not for mere fossil-grubbers. If I did not believe that there is to be found here, in Greek philosophy, at least a measure of the truth, the truth that does not grow old, I would not waste five minutes of my life upon it.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Greek philosophy written in a clear and compelling way by one of the 20th century's most important philosophers. I'm glad that this text has been reissued in this attractive format, because my old hardcover version was falling apart. I find myself constantly referring back to this text whenever I need to check on some issue related to an ancient philosopher or ancient philosophical school. Quite simply, a philosophical classic.

wonderful book.
By Lyle D. Hettinger
Based on lectures delivered ca. 1920, this critical history of Greek philosophy was very good, and promoted a good and basic understanding of the beginnings of philosophy, and it would seem that Greek philosophy is the beginning of all subsequent philosophy. I enjoyed reading this book and gained a lot of knowledge from it about philosophy, especially taking into consideration that my area is history and literature.

Delightful book
By Seikprof
Very interesting reading in an area that was sadly neglected in my educational experience. It's a pity I took the free copy - it lacks a table of contents but it's short enough to search by page as necessary.

About the Author
In 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr co-founded Hull House in Chicago, Illinois, the first settlement house in the United States. The house was named after Charles Hull, who built the building in 1856. When starting out, all of the funding for the Hull House came from the $50,000 estate she inherited after her father died. Later, the Hull House was sponsored by Helen Culver, the wealthy real estate agent who had initially leased the house to the women. Jane and Ellen were the first two occupants of the house, which would later be the residence of about 25 women. At its height, Hull House was visited each week by around 2000 people. Its facilities included a night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs for older children, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, bathhouse, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and labor-related divisions. Her adult night school was a forerunner of the continuing education classes offered by many universities today. In addition to making available services and cultural opportunities for the largely immigrant population of the neighborhood, Hull House afforded an opportunity for young social workers to acquire training. Eventually, the Hull House became a 13-building settlement, which included a playground and a summer camp

An Empathetic Look At the Plight of Early 20th Century Poverty-Stricken Immigrants
By Mark B. Cohen
Hull House founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams spent twenty years working with the poverty-stricken immigrant poor in Chicago. She writes here with understated passion and unqualified empathy for their plight.

Anyone who wants to know why we have a fourty hour work should read this book. Addams writes about the desirablity of factory work over household work for young women, due both to the lack of isolation and the relatively short working hours, "only" from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days a week.

Anyone who wants to know why we minimum wage laws, social security disability laws, age discrimination laws, social security laws, welfare laws, etc. should read this book. Addams writes about people earning pennies an hour, having their peak earning years in their twenties, being disabled in their thirties, and being dependent on children for financial support. The children, in turn had their education stop before high school so they can support their families.

Anyone who wants to know why governments spend so much money on education should read this book. Addams writes about children having a choose limited to factory employment or household service, with the more intellectually oriented being doomed to spend a lifetime haunting public libraries and public lectures, but having virtually no chance of escaping the circumstance of their birth.

Anyone who wants to know why poverty-stricken people are suspicious of political reform movements should read this book. Addams writes about the major efforts Chicago's political powerhouses made to help individual poverty-stricken people, and the irrelevance of wisdom advocating personal savings to people who could not pay for food for their family, or of wisdom urging them to stay out of taverns when they were a great source of personal help and friendship.

One hundred and five years after Addams wrote this book, the United States is a far better place to live than it was then. But our country's improvements, urged by great progressive leaders like Addams, are under relentless right-wing assaults today. This book is extremely relevant to our country's future, if our future is going to continue to better than our past.

The introduction of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, the past president of the Society for the Advancement of American philosophy, adds a great deal to this work, as it places Addams and her fellow reformers into the context of both their times and the prevailing systems of thought.

Addams saw democracy as a way of life, and not just a series of electoral choices. She sought a major expansion of municipal services, to both improve the living standards of the desperately poor and to wean them away from dependence on corrupt political machines. She advocated the existence of "A reformer who really knew the people and their great human needs, who believed it was the business of government to serve them, and who further recognized the educative power of a sense of responsibility...."

Addams addresses this book to the philanthropic community which provided the base of her financial support. She clearly saw them as providing seed money for demonstration projects to create greater governmental and societal commitment.

It is fashionable in some quarters to say that nothing has been done and nothing can be done to improve the plight of the poverty-stricken. Anyone who believes that, or must deal with others who believe that, should read and quote liberally from this book.

Addams Visualizes Day-to-Day Democracy
By Mork
Jane Addams was an amazing woman - respectful and highly intelligent. Like fellow Pragmatists John Dewey, William James and George Herbert Mead, she maintained that democracy emerges from the People rather than being bestowed on Americans from government (whether benevolent or otherwise). As the founder of Chicago's Hull House, one of the most famous settlements in the US, she met people everyday that had diverse experiences and hopes for their lives. She tells their stories straightforwardly and in a way that allows the reader to clearly see how misinterpretation occurs with and between people. Addams advocates for doing good "with" people as opposed to doing good "for" people, for taking ethical action to ensure that all Americans have a voice in our ongoing democratic conversation.

Good Ideas and Principles for the 21st Century, Too!
By bln
If you think of Jane Addams in terms of settlement houses and ending World War I (or trying to), settle down with this slender book to read her thoughts on "social ethics" and practical considerations that affect us today even in different situations than Addams was confronting. Excellent information and thought-provoking. Highly recommended for students of peace and justice studies and members of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom - Addams' ideas about social and economic status differences are eye-opening!

They Offered to Lead Their Nation: A Review of the Announcement Speeches of Republican Candidates for the 2016 Race for President of the Un

They Offered to Lead Their Nation is a book of reviews of the announcement speeches of 16 Republican candidates for President of the United States. These reviews have a simple goal - that you to know what the candidate said in the announcement speech.

An announcement speech reveals the major platform of a candidate and why he or she has chosen to throw a hat in the ring. These reviews are not to play “gotcha” with any candidate. Don Cole presents a concise review of the announcement speech. He wants you to know what the candidate believes is important and wants you to hear.

One of these candidates will likely be taking the Oath of Office a few months from now as the 42nd President of the United States. What that person thought of as important at the beginning will likely be the foundation on which all future decisions are made.

Here is what some others have said about "They Offered to Lead Their Nation."

Don Cole does what any conscientious voter should do....but most of us don’t. He listens carefully to what each candidate says and objectively distills that down into what it means. He provides his readers the means to make an informed decision, rather than relying on what others say about the candidate. Rather than trying to convince you who you should support, he gives the reader the tools to decide for themselves...in essence, the way our Republic was designed. His work will make us all better citizens by becoming more informed voters. Unless one plans to do the laborious research themselves, you will not find a more informative, objective, and helpful source than Don Cole. - Sonny Perdue Governor Georgia 2003-2011

~~~~~
In this world of abundant information we sometimes can’t see the forest for the trees. These reviews are short and concise therefore a valuable tool for me to make a more informed decision. How can we complain if we don’t do our part to make it better? Thank you Don. - David S. (Steve) Southwell - Owner Smoakies Bar-B-Que Cordele, Georgia
~~~~~

Don Cole has written an interesting compendium summarizing and analyzing the announcement speeches of the 2016 GOP Presidential field. It contains lots of historical context and comparisons making it a valuable resource for readers in developing their own opinions about the race. - Randy Evans - Republican National Committee - National Committeeman - Georgia

~~~~~
Don’s compilation of announcement reviews is truly worth the read. In a field crowded with Republican hopefuls, Don presents the issues that the candidates defined in their drive for the nation’s highest office. - Bob Koncerak - Founding Chairman, Republican Leadership for Georgia
~~~~~

An astute observer of the national political scene, Don Cole provides an excellent analysis of the announcement speeches of each Republican Presidential candidate. His insights provide a common sense voter’s guide for conservatives and independents across the nation. - Patrick T Malone - Senior Partner - The PAR Group

~~~~~
Don Cole is a true Grassroots Activist - these reviews are a Resource for Voters seeking to make an informed decision to Choose to our 2016 Republican Nominee. - Alec Poitevint - Republican National Committee -Member 1989-2012
~~~~~

I am not as involved on the political process as I should be. Therefore I was delighted to have this fair and unbiased synopsis of each presidential candidacy speech up to this point. -Frankie Ross, Average Citizen
