I'm not a Confucius nor a China expert, but ...

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Granted, I haven't read other translations of the Analects, so my rating is for the book itself more than as a comparison to other translations.

The fact that Confucius lived thousands of years ago is amazing to me ... the things he says apply to people throughout the ages, and they're full of wisdom. Having read the book, I find myself trying to be a bit more of a Confucian gentleman than I did before reading it. Confucius' teachings about humanity and being a gentleman span across the ages.

I'm very glad I read this book. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is because I can't compare it to other translations, and it seems a little improper to rate a translated book without comparing it to other translations. But I personally found Leys' lines to be easily understandable and interesting, even if I have no way of ascertaining their accuracy with the original text.

**7/31/09 UPDATE** I was looking to buy a copy of the Analects for a friend when I came across my own review when trying to decide between versions ... which is a somewhat strange feeling! I'm still not an "expert", but having read several more Chinese classics in the meantime, including a few versions of the Analects, I thought I would update this review. I think the Leys translation is a very good introduction to the Analects for someone who is looking for a starting point in Confucian thought. The translation is a little bit loose but flows well in English, the introduction gives a good amount of context without going overboard, and the notes are nicely situated at the end to prevent clutter. This makes it a good version for the Confucius novice, a comment I mean in earnest and not a backhanded compliment. That said, I have yet to find a translation that surpasses Waley's in its rigor and thoroughness; the copious notes and detailed introduction are excellent as well. However, Waley is likely to be a little more difficult for the newcomer to Confucius and Confucianism ... so he might not be the best starting point. As always, different translations work best for different people. Read the first couple of pages of a few versions and you'll quickly have an idea of what suits you. No matter which version you end up with, the Analects is a wonderful work, worthy of the praise it receives!

An anthology

This book is delightful, irritating, and utterly sui generis; the personality of its author is on every page. As a translation it is sometimes inspired--Leys has a knack for avoiding the very un-Chinese verbiage with which Lau and, sometimes, the generally superior Dawson clutter their lines. But it cannot be relied upon as a translation. In the first book the words "Rich but loving ritual" become "Rich but considerate." Ritual (li) is one of the great themes of the Analects and it is either dishonest or shockingly clumsy to conceal its key presence in this important passage. At other times we descend from translation to mere paraphrase: "a state of a thousand chariots" becomes "a medium-sized state". I often found myself wishing that Leys had taken to heart Dawson's words: "I do feel that one should get as close to the original as possible....I do not think that it is entirely virtuous to produce a version which reads as if it were written at the end of the twentieth century."

The notes, to the degree that they comment on the text itself or on the translation choices, are illuminating only for someone who has read other translations and has something to compare them to. But what quickly becomes apparent is that, under the guise of a translation with notes, what we have here is something like an anthology. Borges, Pascal, Stendhal, C. S. Lewis, Marcus Aurelius, Nietzsche, even Pancho Villa and many others are given long and full quotes. Sometimes they shed light on the original. Sometimes there is only a tangential relationship; one gets the impression that Leys was simply reminded of something and decided to share it, as in a conversation. They are always very interesting: this is the delight of the book. It is as if a select dinner-party full of eccentrics and geniuses were having the Analects read aloud to them and invited to comment freely. Clearly we cannot recommend this version for someone new to Confucius! If you've never read Confucius before, you want to get into the China of the fifth century B.C. and stay there for a while, not constantly get pulled back into modern Europe. There is some danger that these quotes will shed too much of their own kind of "light" back onto the Analects--which is a very elliptical, minimal, suggestive text--and that the new reader's mind will come permanently to associate some of the ideas of, say, Pascal with those of Confucius. But if you are already familiar with Confucius (preferably through at least two or three other translations) and if you have a healthy interest in and knowledge of Western civilization, this book, taken for what it is, will be a delight.

A couple of reviewers have commented on the anti-gay prejudice which comes up, I believe, twice in the notes. These passages really do vitiate the work. It is not only the prejudice itself; after all a good dish needs some spice and Leys is entitled to his opinion. But the whole issue is so obviously foreign to the Analects, the passages in which it comes up strike so discordant a note, that one wonders what they were doing here. And they are not, even in themselves, good or interesting: the ideas are banal and the tone verges on the mean-spirited. Leys constantly writes as if he were taking a friend into his confidence, and assumes that the intelligent friend will feel the same way he does. He gets away with this because his views are generally intelligent and because usually there is some fig-leaf of connection to the Analects to support it. But in these and a few other passages we are suddenly pulled up short by the realization that it is not wisdom but mere cantankerousness that we have on display. It is bad style, bad taste.

I am giving this three stars because it is being sold as a translation of the Analects and that is what, as a translation, it deserves. As an anthology of quotes suggested by the Analects it might get five stars, with perhaps one taken out for the fault mentioned above.

If you have never read Confucius and are looking for a good introductory translation, I recommend Raymond Dawson's.

TERRIBLE

This is clearly the worst mafia novel I have ever read! The only interesting part is in the beginning when the author describes the wars between the Italians and Irish, then the book wanes incredibly with apparent unresearched information. Anyone who gives this book a positive review has not read much about the Mafia. Ccoon's review nails this book dead on. First off the author's attempt to tackle an impossible topic, the first one hundred years of the Mafia, to accomplish this, the book would have to be several volumes. They should have stuck with the beginning and gone into further detail about how the Mob originated in the United States. This part is very interesting, as I had not read much on the topic, but I question the legitimacy of it after going on to read the rest of the book, and finding several inaccuracies. For those looking to learn about the Mafia, pick an era or event and just try and find a book about that, and avoid this one if you want to know the real story.

Once you get past the 20s the book dries up, until you get to the 80s and a section that must have been written by Guliani's p.r. firm. The writing is not good (how many times can the author say someone died of "lead poisoning?") and the editing matches the writing. If you are not from New York, and want to know anything about the Mafia from 1930-1985, than this book is not for you.

The best book I have read this year

Whether you want to go to India or not, this book will take you there. Not the India of Bollywood or Disney, but a place with stark beauty that will make you want to jump on a plane to experience first hand, or just disappear deeply into the lush details of Mr. Benavav's exquisite writing. Traveling nomadic water buffalo herders on their annual migration from their winter to summer range high in the Himalyas, this forest dwelling family is faced with trials and tribulations most westerners can't even imagine. They attempt to preserve their generations old grazing rights from a national park program that seems to be well intentioned, but perhaps sadly misinformed. You will breathe in the diesel fumes from cars passing within inches of the sleeping family while they camp on the side of the highway during their journey through what seems to be a completely foreign landscape which simultaneously holds the potential for catastrophe and the opportunity to lounge in the sacred rivers of India and sunbathe while lying on a water buffalo's back. It seems that the lives of these nomads vacillate almost daily between heaven and hell, but their humor and love for their animals and one another transforms the journey into one of those books you read slowly at the end like letting a piece of dark chocolate melt in your mouth with your eyes closed to prolong the experience.
The photographs in the middle of the book are worthy of being displayed on your wall or in a museum. They will root your firmly into the places and connect you intimately with the people in this book. I found myself continually flipping forward and backward to connect a face with a person during the story, which adds dimension to the relationship Benavav cultivates for you with his words.
A word of warning, you may want finish the book when you have a moment to compose yourself after you are done. Life in India seems to be lived on the razor's edge, and it will cut right through the book and shake you awake from the sleepy ease most westerners take for granted. I washed the tears of my face only to them springing back from the gratitude of having running water.
Buy this book. It may carry you away from your troubles and you may fall in love with people you will never meet. It will change the way you look at your life. And it could make you start planning a trip to India.

This book is great!

It is thorough and comprehensive, covering the latest research on gender differences across numerous domains, including physical/mental health, relationships, communication, and the workplace. It considers the theoretical explanations surrounding the psychology of gender while still successfully evaluating the extant empirical literature. Helgeson has done an excellent job of updating this edition. She is also careful to acknowledge the intersection of gender with factors like age, race, and sexual orientation. The "do gender" exercises in the book also make for excellent small group projects for students.

eBook terrible!

The eBook edition is awful! It is poorly edited and formatted. It is the worst eTextook I have ever used. I hope the hard copy is better! There are no built in flash cards. There is no section at the bottom of the screen where you can see where you are in a chapter and advance ahead that way. This eBook is like someone just typed a PDF version of the book and provided zero interactive or study features common to digital textbooks. I am sorry I purchased it.

Scott McGaugh, the marketing director of the USS Midway Museum, is a veteran journalist and the author of Battlefield Angels and several books on the USS Midway. An outstanding book with much information about medical care of the wounded in the Civil War

This book was very enlightening. If you choose to read this book you will learn so much about how the Civil War soldiers endured their wounds and were cared for until Jonathan Letterman began to organize the medical corps so soldiers wounds could be treated more quickly and with better care. He was an amazing doctor and with his skills of organization was able to improve the nursing care for the soldiers. It is a must read book.

Surgeon in Blue, Jonathan Letterman: Triage, Ambulances and Battlefield Farms

Scott McGough's Surgeon In Blue is the first full length biography of Letterman. The author's narrative is accessible to a variety of readers. It is not a detailed account of military campaigns nor is it a densely written example of medical history. It offers minimal insight into Letterman's character and motivation. Jonathan Letterman did not leave a trove of personal letters. A current edition of his Medical Recollections of the Army of the Potomac is 204 pages in a slim trade paperback edition. Letterman's narrative is similar to an analytical treatise: clear, precise and dispassionate.McGough gives other medical reformers credit where credit is due. He notes that Letterman in early 1863 "could set aside the continuing refinement of battlefield care that he had organized. Fredericksburg validated the Letterman System. Though the system was Letterman's achievement, it had been built in part on the work of Napoleon's surgeons more than sixty years before and of Union army surgeons under Ulysses S. Grant earlier in 1862."

McGough's work accomplishes several tasks. It puts Letterman and his work in the context of the mid-19th century U.S. army. Surgeon in Blue offers a clear depiction of the personalities and political vendettas of the Army of the Potomac, the presidential cabinet, the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Sanitary Commission. McGough has researched the appropriate archival material and enhanced his efforts by consulting historians of the National Park Service and the U.S. Army, the Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guides, and the staff of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Surgeon in Blue offers the compelling story of American physician's life lived during the sobering era of the American Civil War.

As a former military surgeon of the 20th century, I am impressed with the description and detail of the travail and hardship of the 19th century surgeon and soldier. Amputation was the only surgical procedure available. Wound infection was guaranteed. Anaesthesia was unavailable. God Bless them all, and give them peace.

Author TW Brown Takes us down a very Racially charged path, A path that is beginning to develop more and more in the United States. This is not a TW Brown horror story of make believe but what could become a U.S.A true horror story. The United States is at a brink in time where failure is a very real possibility. People today worry about Russia and China But here is a real threat inside our own boarders and minds. And the sad truth is it is a very possible or probable scenario today more than any other time in our history(just look at any news story). When I started reading this book I could not put it down until I was seeing cross-eyed (3am). I had to finish it the next day as I keep thinking about it. I was allowed to read this in advance as a Beta reader and for that I was very Thankful. I would likely not have paid for this book as I am a zombie/apocalyptic reader and I would have missed out on one He** of a book. I truly prey that this book never becomes a reality. THIS IS A MUST READ for all American's regardless of race.

Not your typical TW Brown book but a good read!

I was given the opportunity to read this book by the author before it came out so I wanted to give my feedback and recommend that you purchase this book. This book deals with a real subject that is going on in the world right now race and race relations. The book starts off with a police officer on trial for shooting an African-American man who was robbing a bank. The outcome of the trial leads to a series of events. You get a bird's eye view from all different perspectives you follow a organized group of African-American Men who have a plan in place to try make a change and to have their voices heard. You have a White Supremacy Group who use the situation to take matters into their own hands. You have the Government during an election year using the situation to further their own agenda to help themselves and try to hurt their opponents. The Media is being used as a weapon for multiple sides and you get to see just how much damage the media can do to a situation. The book is amazing in such a way that it can be used to really open up conversation between groups of people who may not normally talk or to get them to talk about deeper subject matters. A lot of times fear and hate comes from not knowing or understand someone or something and there were a few examples of that in the book. TW Brown is an Amazing author and it really showed with this book. This could not have been an easy book for him to write with the subject matter and from all the different points of view. I could not put this book down and literally read it in one sitting.

A Real Possiblity

I received an ARC(advanced reader copy) from the author of this book. This is not normally the kind of book I would read but I enjoy his other works so I wanted to give it a try, and I am glad that I did. This book delves into what could easily be a real possibilityy in our world. In our society racism has become something that many people do not talk about unless it is accusing a person of being raciest. I think that the story in this book could easily be real some day and it got me to thinking about why that is. It give perspectives from all different points of view on a race war basically. It was an interesting read and I could not put it down needing to know what would happen. I am glad I read this book and I hope it can get people to start talking about this subject more openly as to hopefully avoid this kind of stuff in the future. It gives perspectives from different races and shows how both sides can be raciest towards the other. I would recommend this book even if it is not something you would normally read, it gets you thinking.

Cal Jillson is Professor in the Department of Political Science at Southern Methodist University. His recent books include Lone Star Tarnished: A Critical Look at Texas Politics and Public Policy; Texas Politics: Governing the Lone Star State; Pursuing the American Dream: Opportunity and Exclusion Over Four Centuries; Pathways to Democracy: The Political Economy of Democratic Transitions; and The Dynamics of American Politics. Jillson is a frequent media commentator on Texas and national politics.

I Almost LOVE This Book - 4.5 Stars

It explains so much! I always wondered why there were "states" as opposed to just America. Why are we the "United States" of America? This book goes into great detail to answer that question. (Should I give away the answer or should I make you read it, or perhaps you already know?) Also, I wondered how could marijuana be both legal in some states and illegal federally. Having read the book - the proverbial lightbulb came on.

Bonuses: this book includes the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and some of the Federalist papers in the appendices.

Yes, at times this book was dry, but I actually felt inspired and even captivated while reading some of its passages. I never thought I would be one to like history, but this book gives a great foundation of our government and why it is the way it is.

The book also points you to a free supplemental website that has vocabulary and quizzes. I enjoyed taking the quizzes because it let me know what I needed to focus on when I got some answers wrong, which helped for my exams.

I rented this book on Kindle for just under $20. I might actually buy the Kindle version, or a hardcopy version, because it is so foundational. I (almost) love this book! Even with the author's biases and all. (The author can be quite sarcastic at times in his critiques of both parties and "the system", which gives the book personality.) 4.5 stars!

Great Textbook for an American Government Class

I've used Jillson's textbook in the online classes that I have taught. This American Government textbook is unique because Jillson uses history to show how our political system has changed over time. This is important because most students tend to think that the way government works today is how it worked in 1789; that is simply not the case. Our institutions are the same but their levels of strength have fluctuated since then. I would recommend that potential purchasers read the reviews for the 6th edition of the textbook on this site (http://www.amazon.com/American-Government-Political-Development-Institutional/product-reviews/0415881579/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1). The 7th edition is not that much different from the 6th. the only major differences is that it covers the 2012 election and President Obama's entire first term.

Instructors: If you order an exam copy of the book from Routledge ([...]) the company will give you access to Instructor's Manuals and Sample PowerPoint slides for each chapter in the textbook. These materials have been very helpful to me when I teach my classes.

This book explains everything and is super easy to read

I read this book the most out of all my college textbooks. This book explains everything and is super easy to read. I would highly recommend this for a government 100 class! It's a great study aide since it goes over all the concepts. My teacher pulled her test questions out of this which is why it was so helpful for that class, but despite this, it does a great job at explaining concepts. The book itself is really flimsy though and seems fragile so there's a lot of wear and tear on mine.....The resale value seems to be decent ($20?), but it's fine because I got a lot of use out of it. Definitely recommend as a study aide!
